RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

It should also be stated that Appert was not a good goalie, had amazing goalies to work with at Denver, and seemed to ruin Lange who was amazing as a Freshman under Fridgen while he took Alford and made him mediocre from the horrendous he was before...

That's it... Appert was such a mediocre goalie he won't ever make it as a coach. I can't recall a more asinine statement here of late. Tell us, how is the "Great One" Gretzky fairing as a coach?

How could I have forgotten that Berkhoel and Mannino just magically appeared at DU's rink one day asking to play? Oh that's right, it's because Appert recruited both keepers, then coached them both to NC's. Nah, zero talent or coaching ability there. Impossible.

If anyone screwed up our keepers it was Fridgen. God knows I supported the guy and respect the heck out of him as man, but his incessant need to yank goalies mid-game/mid-period trashed the psyches of both Mathias and Jordan long before Seth took over the ruins. Not to mention that after Burkie left to coach the women, Fridgen never hired another goalie coach for the better part of three years. Good luck with that in D1.

Sorry to muddle your weak arguments with fact.

Merriam is no stiff, he can play. He may not be number 1, but he is a good number 2. And as that, he has to get in some game time.
I will let Appert decide how to handle the goalies. That is his job.

Don't confuse him with statements of fact, EHF. Just because Merriam narrowly missed having the #1 goalie stats in the NAHL doesn't mean he has any ability. :p According to TP, he isn't good enough for the Knickerbacker Thurs. night beer league.

I certainly agree that DF had an incredibly negative effect on Alford. That kid had potential-he threw 4 or 5 shutouts in his limited number of appearances. He had his weakenesses (every time he strayed from the net to handle the puck was an adventure) but would still be one of my choices in net facing a shootout. I agree our goaltenders are now in the right hands.:)

Alford was a mediocre goaltender at best. You can't ruin a mediocre goalie. You can make him think he is better than he actually is and hope he overachieves in his play......which is what Appert did!!

IIRC, JA won the top goalie award in the AJHL. York didn't. York, however, probably had tougher competition in Brad Eidsness.

I knew this discussion was coming back. I don't see how it's relevant to how things are going right now, but maybe I missed a memo along the way.

My opinions on how Alford was handled in the past are pretty well known by now.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Didn't Alford have a shutout streak going for a while, and was getting close to Joel Laing's mark? All he needed was some confidence, and he would do well. Didn't he pitch a shutout in the shootout from the first Governor's Cup? Mediocre? I think not. Difficulty to put something behind him (figuratively in this case, I don't necessarily mean the puck)? I think so.

I think Lange's only problem, and I take this from research another person on here did for a project, is that he never actually had a goaltender coach. When Coach was working with him, he may have gone a bit overboard with some stuff, and was a lot to intake. Obviously he stepped up his game the whole time, and had a very good glove.

Oh, and any goalie that earns shutouts just HAS to be mediocre... (Alford, Lange, AND York, don't remember earlier than that)

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

A good number of the goaltenders at the D1 level have their own personal goaltending coaches.

Thanks for the reference Ralph-Alford was decidedly not mediocre-as I said he had considerable potential.

Yes-we were very much in agreement about it.:)

Speaking of goalies, I just read on the women's recruit thread that SLU has received a commitment from a deaf goalie. That would present some additional complications for a goalie coach.

Edit: Oops. She is a forward. I read it wrong. :o

Talk about overcoming a deficit:eek:

Alford was also on NHL Central Scouting's radar for a while as well as one of the better goaltenders in North America.

He was 7th amongst college-bound North American goalies in 2004's final CSS rankings.

The 2004 NHL Draft is the one that saw Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin as the first two picks. It was also the draft that saw Christian Jensen drafted.

GLM-Appreciate the stats that help back up my assertion-The potential was there! I do not claim to be a goalie expert but I have seen them all at RPI going back to Bill Sack.
