ronmexico and CC visit UAA 14/15 Jan

Re: ronmexico and CC visit UAA 14/15 Jan

I get that. Put yourself in their shoes (not skates).

When local kids on other teams come in and play hard it's out of respect. Respect for their families and for everyone else in town. They want you to see they didn't f up.

For almost all of these kids - they have to have a life after hockey.

Was mommy a little rabid? I guess so... The point being? Be glad a local kid plays in a WCHA program.
I'd actually rather have the kid not play at WCHA school (nor Fairbanks). If somebody doesn't want to play at UAA then I don't want him playing against UAA. I understand the desire to get a good education and I'm fine with that but part of making choices in life is consequences, and the consequence of not going to UAA is that people like me are not gonna like it. It's happened too many times and we'd like to keep the talented kids around here.

Congrats to the Seawolves!
Taking down the tiggies makes you A-Ok in my book ...at least until next weekend.:D

BTW, GCI's telecast has really improved.

We just don't like seeing Anchorage kids going to other schools.

Take it as a badge of honor that Anchorage is producing excellent hockey players. Every player has different needs, both hockey-wise, socially and educationally. Plenty of players want to experience a different place for college than where they grew up, and while its nice for the hometown fans to see hometown players skate for UAA, you shouldn't be bitter about players who want a change of scenery or a different kind of educational experience.

35 total shots? Just from that it sounds like this game was even worse than the UND-UM game. For your sakes, I certainly hope it wasn't.

While a number of UAA posters here are somewhat less than temperate, and your point on the direction people take on entering adulthood is especially valid given Alaska’s position on the nation’s periphery, it remains galling as the locals are drained off, and the nuggets that occasionally appear follow the same course.

Constantly baking the bread that others eat, then being told just do with cake.

Actually thought it was quite an interesting game to watch, and well played - not as sloppy as Friday’s. Not particularly bruising and grinding (with the Feline’s at a disadvantage along the boards) and good of hop and quick sticks. This is the 5th time UAA’s faced the Tigers, and the ’Woff’s penalty kill and PP have markedly improved, and Gunderson’s freezing of the puck’s been outstanding. Not much sustained pressure from either team even strength.

It's actually a problem that extends well beyond hockey. Most states are able to keep a good majority of their best and brightest in state at in-state universities. Alaska has a huge "brain drain", that has only been recently addressed, but the problem remains of the majority of high schools will leave state to go to college. Part of it is cultural, most parents believe in the need to get out of state for awhile is essential to their kids. Part of it is image, the UA system doesn't have a great reputation, that UAA has actually been trying to combat heavily recently. The main problem of the UA system is that the UA top brass insists on making UAF the main focus and tries to intice the majority to go there. Problem with that is that Fairbanks is very bad place to go to college (it's really cold and really dark) and so not many want to go there.

It's a bitterness that extends well beyond the point of hockey to me.

Interesting points, but I would say its been happening all over the country as people are leaving rural areas and rural states for the big cities. And people have been leaving colder areas for the Sunbelt and West.

Not only is the US, but in Canada, Asia, Europe & Australia.
