ROKU??? - what is this? help mookie out, please :D

Re: ROKU??? - what is this? help mookie out, please :D

Me too. usually some documentary or a foreign film, or an old movie I want to see like " the greatest game ever played" etc.

Lots of indie movies, too. Some with bigger name actors, which is kind of, but not really, surprising.

I want to see red 2. - nope
Looked for ripd. - nope
Just plain red - uh uh
Caddyshack?? Nada
What about James Bond?? From Russia with love? -sign up for DVD
The streaming rights to them come and go. Netflix did have the James Bond collection up until a couple months ago.

If you're looking for "Aging actor trying to still do action movies..." I see that "The Expendables 2" is available to stream. :p

Some of their original program is pretty great. I gave "House of Cards" a try since I like "The West Wing," and other political type thrillers, and was hooked into watching the whole series. "Orange is the new Black" was awesome.

Discs, actually. Depending on studio deals, some things will probably never hit streaming. :( Hence my 1-Disc + Streaming plan.

Well, like I told the netflix woman- TV viewing impulse buy for Mookie. Only do it when I have time. Streaming works for me

Re: ROKU??? - what is this? help mookie out, please :D

I'm stuck with DTV for another year and I'm fed up with the Center Ice package not airing Leafs broadcasts so I'm looking at cutting back to minimum service and ditching CI after this season in favor of Game Center Live.

Does anyone use a wireless display adapter to mirror from a tablet or laptop? Thinking of giving Google's Chromecast and Amazon Prime a tryout.

I got myself a Chromecast just before Christmas. It's a nice gimmick but I'm not sure it's ready for primetime. Neither my phone nor my laptop have any luck sending quality video to the device. It's usually slow and choppy which sort of makes sense when you think about it. High bandwidth to get to the phone/laptop and even more bandwidth to get from there to the Chromecast.

I've only used it a handful of times, and haven't done any research into making it better so there may be tips and tricks that make it a more pleasant experience.

Okay, so I'm thinking of switching to streaming services from cable. (Not necessarily Roku, as I would also consider any of the other options: AppleTV, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, etc.)

Is the deal with this stuff that you're basically just buying a device that you can use to stream stuff and put it up through the HDMI jack on your TV? And that you're really just streaming apps from services, so it's not like you get out of having to pay for HuluPlus, Amazon Prime, Netflix, [insert streaming app here].

Because with all that in mind, it basically seems like you could get the same functionality from hooking up a laptop to your TV (albeit, the laptop would probably not be able to commit as much processing power to the job as a dedicated piece of hardware).
