Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

Must have been quite the rivalry during the Eisenhower years.

Before you speak you might want to look into what was said a little more. Nothing that was stated occurred during Eisenhower's Presidency. Go shave the upper-lips on your cheerleaders...

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

I hate UND more, as a Gopher fan. I've said many times before, hockey is all they have, and I want to crush that sole dream they have.

As for the MN-WI rivalry, that is a part of an overall state-vs-state rivalry that covers all sports and such, and to me, makes the hockey rivalry take second stage to UND.

Obviously, now that UND and MN are in different conferences, it lessens that rivalry in the long term.

However, it was the biggest rivalry in college hockey, IMO. It was more than school vs school. It was region vs region, state vs state. It wasn't a city split (like BC/BU). It wasn't intrastate (MI vs MSU). It was bigger than that. Much bigger.

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

I say no school is worthy of rival status unless your fans have thrown their dead mascot on the ice. Often.

And if most of the male fans in attendance get a woody seeing that happen, you have yourself a jimdandy rivalry.

If only it was possible to find a dead seawolf since they don't even exist....or for Anchorage it would be mighty hard to get a dead polar bear in to the arena let alone throw it on the ice.

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

In Alaska the shared global geographic isolation as well as the dramatically different communities of the two schools contributes mightily to UAA/UA_ being a very intense rivalry. History is a big part of it as well, but the fact that people who live in Fairbanks don't like Anchorage and vice-versa is really what drives it.

Exactly what I was thinking. We have no option to really form a true rivalry or hatred for another team since we are thousands of miles away from any other D1 school. And now with the realignment we play each other 4 times and not only do we play for the Governors Cup but also for points so intensity has increased between teams and the fan bases.

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

A key factor in determining the strength of a given rivalry is determining how many times USCHO's Moderators need to close a thread and have it restarted over the course of the week leading into the game weekends :p :D

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

It wasn't intrastate (MI vs MSU).

See, that's the thing with Michigan v. sparty, sparty insists that they are "the real university of Michigan" simply because the vast majority of their students are from the state of Michigan. I think, at least it used to be years ago, that Michigan's in-state students was only at 60%. There is an absolute ton of east coast students at Michigan and quite a sizable amount of West coast students as well (don't forget about students from other countries as well). Therefore it's basically the creme de la creme of Michigan plus world-wide representation versus kids who weren't good enough to go to Michigan but still too good to attend a directional university.

sparty seriously only measures themselves against Michigan in everything...

Once again, I'm not saying that it is the end all-be all in best rivalry's but hey, it's got to be up there.

Not easy, but if you get the theater and physics people together, I 'm sure you could get one in the building and on the ice. Sioux fans have been waiting for just that if NDSU ever gets a D1 hockey program. Buffalos. What a proud moment that would be.

The stressed line enhances my point. Sparty cares about UMich in everything. UMich prob only cares about Sparty half the time, if that. It's tOSU for other things, as to a rivalry.

I've been in gopher-hate therapy for many years, Brent, but I can see I'm just a piker.

I hear you and for the vast majority of Michigan fans (notice, not Michigan Hockey fans rather Michigan fans) that is true. Take a poll of Michigan Hockey fans and I'd venture to guess that at least 80% of us hate sparty more than suckeye. It's what made the B1G Championship game for me on Saturday a no win situation. I hate both schools, I couldn't win (but at the same time I couldn't lose). It is the epitome of the glass half-full or half-empty argument. I felt schizophrenic while watching it...

I can respect that but didn't NoDik State just won back-to-back FBS National Championships? Yea I know FBS but that is something...

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

Well to give some credit to the AHA the best rivalries in this conference are RIT - Air Force since both usually finish in the top half and have the better fan bases in the conference as well. This is usually a good game to be at either school's arena for although RIT doesn't play as well at the Academy. Also RIT - Niagara only attend this one at RIT though Niagara's arena is terrible. The atmosphere is better in Rochester and this game always goes into overtime and is always crazy on the ice and in the stands.

UND fans refuse to recognize NDSU, and vice versa. It's like your UMich/MSU rivalry. I don't think either fanbase would be proud for their rival school winning a title.

I acknowledge them but it's more of an annoyance. They're just like a bunch of gnats, not good for anything but bothering you...

I wonder if this has anything to do with it ?
THE SERIES – UAA vs. UAF
OVERALL: UAA leads 82-54-11:cool:

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

UAF-uaa best rivalry in the WCHA and one of the tops in the nation. It's more than a rivalry between schools, but between 2 cities. State bragging rights and now wcha points are on the line. With no other teams close we don't have different teams that are rivals to divide the hatred between. Win the governors cup, that's what is most important.

Incorrect. I recognize NDSU people as I was taught it's rude not to recognize the person who delivers your pizza/tv/furniture.

I would agree on that Colby Vs Bowdoin rivalry, but you have to be from new england to know about it. People don't realize how good Colby used to be btw.

I also agree that history has a big part of it. I'd say when the other team's goalie skates the length of the rink and back flipping the fans off, that's a good rivalry too. Some things fans remember, even years later.

The UAA vs Alaska rivalry is not to be underestimated.

Re: Rivalries - what make's it "the best around"?

Clarkson and St. Lawrence seems like an underrated rivalry. The schools are so close and they both hate it each other.
