Three of the top 4 in scoring in the nation are from the AHA. While they may deserve it, I would be shocked if more than 1 made it to the Hobey finalists due to at least perceived last of quality competition in the league.

Agreed. I don't think all three should be there. I was supporting Grabowsky and how well he is playing. Especially compared to most of the rest of the team.

Statistics prove that the overall quality of the AHA is still inferior to the rest of the hockey conferences. It is more than perception and should hurt their chances of becoming a finalist. But that doesn't mean Garbowsky isn't playing awesome right now and is head and shoulders above the rest of the team and most of the AHA.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

Garbowsky is carrying that line

That's quite the statement. "Carrying" implies Mitchell and McGowan aren't pulling their own weight, which is absolutely ridiculous - the majority of Garbowsky's goals started with an amazing pass from one of those guys - not just a pass, but an amazing pass. That line works because all three of them are awesome at what they do, not just because Garbo can finish. It says a lot that even though every team comes in knowing that Garbo is "the scorer" on the team and even though their goal is to shut him down McGowan and Mitchell still find a way to get the puck to him. I can't tell you how many times I've rewatched the highlights to admire how well they set up Garbo. I'm not taking anything away from Matt, because he's amazing, but Mitchell and McGowan are killing it too.

I'm not sure I would call what Mitchell and McGowan are doing is "killing it" but they do deserve some of the credit.

I went and did a quick look at the stats for the season. I totaled up the even strength stats. Only even strength because on PP and PK the players are potentially not typical linemates a high percentage of the time compared to even strength.

McGowan has scored 4 goals. Mitchell has assisted on 2. Garbowsky has assisted on 2.

Mitchell has 0 goals.

Garbowsky has 12 goals. Mitchell has assisted on 8. McGowan has assisted on 5.

Based upon this and not the "eye test", I would agree that not giving credit to Mitchell and McGowan wouldn't be fair. But I would argue that Garbowsky is making his linemates better and not the other way around.

Gladiuk is having as good a season but he's got more support around him in terms of proven offensive players (French, Weinstein, Switzer, Grieve, etc.). I think there will be at most one AHA player on the list of finalists, and other than Garbowsky (assuming he keeps this up) I think Wydo is his main competition. He should have been a finalist last season so if he has anywhere near that good a season this time, I think that will make him a favorite because the coaches are more aware of him this time around.

The way the Hobey works is that coaches select the top 10, and then it's turned over to a committee that includes reps from every league plus some scouts. Each league gets a coach/AD, a ref, a radio/tv reporter and a print/web reporter. But the committee never got to consider Wydo last season because not enough of the 59 coaches voted for him.

Been kind of quiet. I did see that Chris Tanev won a game in OT on his birthday last night. That must of been pretty cool especially playing with the Sedins in OT. Tanev has been making all of us RIT fans proud! Here's the goal:

Tigers seem to be stockpiling offense as they pick up a center in Reed Delainey (6'1" - 165lbs) from the Battlefords North Stars of the SJHL. An 18 yr old, he won't turn 19 until July (DOB 7/23/1996), I'd expect that he'd be a 2016-2017 recruit.

He's in his 2nd year in the SJHL, with a 31gm-13g-10a-20pts-4pim line. Overall in this 2 years with Battlefords his numbers are 79gm-23g-26a-49pts-46pim.

Tigers pick a D Recruit in Gordie Ballhorn from the AJHL Whitecourt wolverines. in 29 games he's got a 3g-6a-35pim line.

He's 6' 175lbs and it is his first full year (2 games in '13-'14) in the AJHL as he's only just turned 17 (DOB 9/2/1997). I imagine he'll spend at least another year in juniors before we see him hitting the ice in Rochester.

This article says he is starting in Fall 2016. http://www.wetaskiwintimes.com/2014/12/23/ballhorn-heading-to-rochester-for-college-hockey

Matt actually laid it out pretty well. I do think Mitchell & McGown are playing well and do not mean to diminish their contributions. They have generated a ton of great scoring chances. My only concern is like the rest of the roster not named Garbowsky its been a little frustrating when looking at the scoring chances that turn into goals. They have scored more than the rest of the team, but giving some of the chances they've had, if they pop a few more of those chances into the net this line really could be in the argument for best in the nation, besides the typical AHA is a weak league retort.

I think people reflect to negatively on a player carrying the team. That happens at times in pro sports and it doesn't mean that other players are playing poorly. However, there is no legit argument that without Garbowsky's eye popping production this team would be in a far different part of the standings than they are now. At this moment I think Garbowsky is a legit Hobey Baker candidate giving not only his numbers but how he is carrying this team. Now to actually win it, I think this improbable scenario would have to continue. Since I've followed Tigers Hockey (since 98-99) I've never seen one guy lead a team in goal scoring like this. I've seen some goal scorers who probably were even better scorers than Garbo. But do not every recall an all most double digit gap lead that Garbo has on the rest of the team. Garbosky has accounted for a third of RIT goal scoring

Now lets not take away from the other story of this team. They have improved, quietly, but drastically on defense. I really think we finally had some addition by subtracting on the blue line and some of the freshmen players are playing outstanding! Now I could take a victory lap, but I have to admit as I said I wasn't ready to sell the farm on him, but Jordan Ruby is actually playing like the guy we thought we had when we recruited him. This is why I felt there was no clear number one coming into this year and it would have been a mistake to give Rotolo the number one job. Both guys came in even in my view, and Ruby has played better than I even thought was best case scenario for him. At the same time, I am not ready to give up on Mike either. If Jordan falters I think there is a great fall back option. Feels good to have.

What really makes me feel positive is IF Garbo can get at least half his production in the second half. We get a few more guys to bury the chances they should. The defense-men should just keep getting better, and solid goal tending continues then this team will finish within the top 5 of the AHA and I think have as good of a chance as anyone to beat Robert Morris in a one game championship.

One last thought, do you think we would get sued if we start calling our top line the MGM line? :D

Saw a Twitter post that RIT has a goalie commit. On my iPhone so not sure how to cut and paste details. You should be able to find it.

Christian Short is the guy.

4.61 | .894 so far this season for the BCHL Surrey Eagles.

He made this list of the top 15 uncommitted goaltenders last spring as number 7.

Found the UML - UCONN game tonight in case anyone is interested in checking out UML. It's early in the 2nd period.

Here's the link for the press release on the commitment of goalie Christian Short from the BCHL Surrey Eagles.

Not the greatest numbers (17gm-4w-13l-4.25gaa-.898sv%) but Surrey is real young with 12 rookies.

Heard that Shots on Goal clocks have been or will be installed at GPC likely before the AIC games incase anyone was curious

The Tigers are down to one NHL player as Pinnizotto was waived by the Oilers on Monday and has so far been unclaimed.

Wow, 6'4" or 193 cm for our Canadian viewers and Matt Campbell. Guess he doesn't live up to his name...

Is there something to this guy that I'm missing? He's big.. but those numbers don't exactly look impressive. Is this just to back fill the open slot with someone that looks like a number 3?

From the Eagles press release, it would seem that the coaching staff was pursuing him for a while. They must see something in him. Surrey is real young and has the worst record in the BCHL this year. He's facing on average 40 shots a night and has gone as high as 55 on occasion. It's tough to go by numbers only for a goalie, because they are so influenced by the defense in front of him.

His prep numbers for sv% over his last 2 years were .903 and .924. We can only wait to see what his role with the Tigers will be.

Also Repaci is no longer listed on the RIT depth chart at collegecommitments.com.

Goalies also take much longer to start to mature their game, which is why you see many late teen, early 20's skaters in the NHL but almost never do you see a goalie under 24. He's playing on a bad team and seeing a ton of shots, but likely Wilson sees the raw talent is there and thinks he can adjust to the college game.

Most goalies don't have great numbers in the low pre-college leagues, because guys like McDavid are busy scoring 7 points a game....

Still can't find anything but rumors on this kid, but his numbers continue to be impressive will be sad if he doesn't land anywhere... In 35 Games he has 21 Goals and 22 Assists...
