Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

I have to disagree a bit here. I games I saw could have been a lot worst if not for Wildung. One thing I have notice is that his 5 hole does leak sometimes. But side to side with his pads he is as good as anyone in the league. That save he made before Chase Norris's goal on Saturday could have been a game changer. Chase answering that save with a goal we big...

A .906 and 3.45 GAA this year on a team with a decent record (he himself has a losing record) speaks for itself. A lot of RIT's goals on him were not special, highlight reel goals. They were clean wristers or clappers that he just didn't stop. Yes he is flexible and has some speed so he'll make some pretty saves, but what Division 1 goalie can't impress on occasion?

RIT put up half a dozen on him in one game last year and then put up 11 on him in two games this year. He's just not that good..

RIT would be ridiculously good if we had scholarships but I am sure academics would suffer heavily.
Scholarships or not, Coach Wilson wouldn't let that happen.
Just because a player is good enough to earn a free ride does not necessarily exclude him (or her) from being a quality student. I think he'd still recruit players at the same academic level as he always has... and HOLD them to the same standards once they're at RIT.

He was the reason Mercyhurst made it all the way to the title game last season. Very good against Bentley two of the three games and then followed that up with one of the best goaltending jobs I've seen in my years covering this league, making 59 saves against RMU in the semifinals.

Coach Wilson's comments after the game on Sunday were interesting as he mentioned how some teams just don't match up well. I think Mercyhurst's style plays to RIT's strengths and the Tigers have traditionally done well against the Lakers, who year in and year out are one of the top teams in the league. But they struggle with RIT the way RIT has struggled against Niagara over the years.

Totally agree. I think he is the perfect coach for RIT because he usually has a very good to great team and having very good academics.

I just want RIT to stay very good at academics, that's all.

But none the achievements you have noted in your signature below have anything to do with academics.
I think you want them to win at least a little bit. ;)

That's talked about in the 'My schools better than yours in academics and maybe hockey!" thread.

I don't think anyone would be upset to find out Garbo had a 2.5 GPA last year with how he played, either.

(I'm not saying he did [I'm sure he didn't], just pointing out an example to show that we're clearly focused on the on-ice performance on this board..)

That wasn't a criticism. Just poking fun at the way you worded your statement.

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, fans don't pay for hockey tickets to watch the players pass their final exams. We all go to the arena to watch our teams win, first and foremost. The fact that some schools' coaches place a high priority on student-athletes actually succeeding in the classroom is a point of pride for those of us that follow those schools, but it truly is a sideline to the actual hockey when all is said and done.

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

Short looked every bit as bad against Canisius as he looked good mopping up Mercyhurst.

Two, maybe three of the goals tonight are directly attributable to him. The shorty was especially awful...the good news is it can't get much worse than 20/25 on Saturday. Having Rotolo hurt and no actual 3rd goalie really hurts, as I'm sure Wayne would have pulled Short after the 3rd goal if he could have..

What the hell is it about playing at home that always makes the team come out like they don't care?
2-6 in conference on your own ice is simply unacceptable, especially if you're undefeated on the road.

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

I like Short, but last night was not a good night for him.
Scoring 3 goals should at least give us a tie at home.

Why was Rotolo suited up if he wasn't available to be put in?? After the 1st period I was hoping coach would put him in.

Offense was firing good last night, especially the 2nd period.
Brown is suspended for 1 game for the hit last night. It was a fun hit to see in person and was surprised they didn't call a penalty.

Rotolo was dressed but was clearly unavailable to play. He didn't take any shots in warmups, instead simply standing over by the bench talking to coaches and refs. Not sure what the point of dressing him is in that case, but maybe he was available in case of extreme emergency (both other goalies getting hurt)?

Losing Brown tonight certainly won't help given we're already thin up front. My new favorite forward Alex Perron-Fontaine should take his spot on the top line!

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

I half thought couch would put in Amato to make a statement to the team about how they were playing. Although I'm not sure if it was effort or execution. There were flashes of good play but hardly any consistency. Luckily, none of the teams behind RIT were able to pass them, but that won't be the case if they don't get a win tonight.

Maybe a bus ride to Ted's in North Tonawanda before each home game would help out here! :D

Short has 3 goals let in on only 15 shots...

Anyone else at the game notice Foote (ref) getting extra buddy buddy with the Canisius players? A lot of butt-pats and smiley chit chat, especially with the goalie.

Interesting stat - this year RIT is 0-4 at home on Friday nights, 3-1-1 on Saturdays at home(counting the BG blue cross tie as a "home" game). Short had a bad weekend, but we still got a win. At least we are getting some good scoring from a mix of players. Valuenzuela is a shifty super quick little guy (well comparatively speakinh to other d-1 players). His toe drag fake shot to by pass the penalty killer and move in closer in the slot to snipe the third goal was real sweet.

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

Another pretty bad game by Short. He reminds me of Josh Watson in that he is big and has longggg legs, but he is positionally weak and extremely awkward post to post. Watson was infamous for giving up wrap-around goals and goals in general on plays starting behind the net. The same appears to be true with Short. He's got a WICKED glove hand, but it can't always bail him out. With a bit more time though if he learns to use his size better he could be a stud.

Outside of that, RIT played a lot better. Really kept their shots in check until the 3rd when RIT got into penalty trouble. Shumway saw his first action in what feels like forever and had 2 points (including the GWG), I also thought he played a solid if unspectacular game defensively. Also..Myles Powell has some serious wheels, and has quietly turned into quite a scorer, netting his 9th tonight...

Final thought, despite a horrible Friday effort we ended the weekend where we began, in 3rd place. Not going to complain about that!

Kudos to Brad Shumway for getting the winning goal. He has been the odd man out on defense so many times that it is great to see him come through when he gets some playing time.
