>>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

If I had more time today, I'd help you out; that format doesn't look like it would take too long to adapt to RIT.

Powers &8^]

It doesn't have to be today, the hard deadline is the 4th of October. I could especially use help regarding the Division 3 days and any notable RIT Hockey alumni from that time, or from the pre-2010 days in general.

Let me put something together today. I go way back. I'll probably just type it in word and you will need for format though.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

I don't know where to send it. This is what I wrote.

Rochester Institute of Technology

Location: Henrietta

Hockey Program Founded: 1962, RIT founded in 1829

Total Universiy Attendance: Fall 2012: 17, 17,950

skate before the teams go out on the ice and between periods helping with the between period contests.

Band: Just known as the RIT Pep Band. The Pep Band and was founded during RIT's DI era.

Music Traditions: After RIT goals and after the game, the band plays "Eye of the Tiger". They also
play the "Hey!" song after the national anthem where the fans will yell "You Suck!" after the Hey.

Arena: Frank Ritter Memorial Arena. The student section (as well as some alumni) is called the Corner
Crew. They traditionally wear orange shirts and jerseys.

The Frank Ritter Memorial Arena was formerly known as Ritter-Clark Rink. It was built prior to the
hockey team being founded, but had hockey in mind. The Tigers also play their Homecoming Game at Blue
Cross Arena, home of the AHL Rochester Americans. This year, the Tigers will also have an outdoor
game at Frontier Field, home of the IL's Rochester Red Wings.

NCAA Tournament: 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2009

Rivals:
1. Air Force

RIT and Air Force joined Atlantic Hockey in the same year, and ever since then, the two teams have been
dominant. The teams have won most of the regular season and conference tournaments. The games are
usually very close as well. They are often one goal games, with the occasional overtime. The rivalry
is based on respect due to Air Force being a military institute.

2. Niagara

These teams started their rivalry in DIII when Niagara started their hockey program as a DI school
starting out by playing DIII. The Purple Eagles consistantly gotten the better of the Tigers though,
only losing once in the DI era for the Tigers.

3. Canisius

This is another team that RIT played when bpth teams played DIII hockey. RIT tended to dominate the
series back then and when RIT started playing DI. The rivalry rampled up during a game where 225
penalty minutes and a melee where there was a goalie fight.

Greatest Players:

1. Simon Lambert - Lambert is the only RIT player to be a Hobey Baker Finalist. When he graduated, he
was RIT's leading scorer in the Division I era with 132 points. His 55 goals still stand as the
career DI leader. He did it in only 3 seasons of DI action, adding 20 points in RIT's last DIII year.

2. Dan Ringwald - Dan was one of if not the best defenseman ever to play at RIT. He has the career
record in assists for RIT with 104 and 4th overall in poinst with 125 in the DI era. Dan was also a
standout on defense as well with a +34 +/- rating for his career.

3. Jerry Galway - If Ringwald was not the best defenseman ever, Galway was. Galway was the DIII player
of the year in the 2001-02 season. He tallied 164 points in his four years on 46 goals and 118 assists
for his career. He was a 3 time All American first team defensemen.

4. Steve Toll - He only played 88 games for the Tigers, but put together some eye popping numbers. He
had 77 goals and 108 assists for 185 points. Had he played his senior year, he would have challenged
the top spot in RIT's record books in points.

Greatest Coachs

1. Wayne Wilson - Coach Wilson is the winningest coach in Tiger history. He is 267-143-44 overall. He
won the Spencer Penrose DI Coach of the Year award after the 2009-10 season. He has been the only
coach the Tigers have known in the DI era and has kept the Tigers near the top of the Atlantic Hockey
standings.

2. Eric Hoffberg - After a slow start to his coaching career, Coach Hoffberg really got rolling. He
lead the Tigers to 5 NCAA tournament appearances and a NCAA DIII National Runner up in 1996. Hoffberg
compiled a 188-82-22

Last Season

Last season was very disappointing for the Tigers, as they failed to make it to the conference tournament
semifinals for the first time in Atlantic Hockey. The Tigers were 15-18-5. They were able to keep
their streak of beating a ranked team every year they have been DI with a win over Michigan.

Key Players for the Upcoming season

Jordan Ruby - He had a 3:05 goals against last year with an 8-10-1 record. He played a lot better after
claiming the #1 starting job last year. Highly touted coming into college play, he will be the Tiger
goaltender with the most experience and is expected to be the starter.

Matt Garbowsky - Matt was the leading scorer for a potent RIT offense last year. He had 11 goals and
22 assists last year for 33 points. He scored a goal in 9 of the last 12 games of the season for RIT.
This year, he will be one of the captains of the team.

Mike Colavecchia - Mike followed up his 32 point sophomore season with a 30 point junior season. He
could have had more points except for missing games due to injury. He will be the top returning goal
scorer for RIT, and with 20 points this year, will have 100 in his career.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Looks great Komey, I really really appreciate it. I'll format it and make some additions (Tanev and Pinner should be in there) and try and get it up tomorrow/tuesday.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Nice work, Komey. You got a few things wrong, though. =)

This is Ritter-Clark Arena. It was indeed built before the hockey team was founded. It still stands today and is easily visible from I-490 eastbound through downtown Rochester. But it's not where the Tigers play today!

The Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena on the Henrietta campus was built in the late 60s, after the hockey team's inception, at the same time as the rest of the new campus. And I think the writeup should mention something about the Gene Polisseni Center. ;)

The current RIT Pep Band was indeed founded in 2005 or 06. But earlier, in the early 80s, the RIT Tiger Band existed, and played occasionally at hockey games. The RIT Tiger Band eventually evolved into the RIT Concert Band, which still exists today. (See page 42 here and this alt.folklore.urban post from 1994.)

Also, Winters should note that the years mentioned in your post are the years those seasons began (for example, our championships were in '83 and '85, not '82 and '84).

(I should also note that although Ritter-Clark was built in the 50s, the team only started playing there in 1962. That was when the team was still a club team, though; we went varsity in 1964.)

Powers, I officially would like to nominate you to be Mr. “One-Up” Man…

Some news to look forward to, RIT recruit Anthony Repaci is off to a very hot start, 8 Goals, 10 Assists including 2 Game Winners in 9 games played so far for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens.

Here is to October, in my opinion the best sport’s month of the year!

It is a long, long time ago, but I thought we went varsity in the 63-64 season. That was my freshman year at RIT and I that's what I remember, but I could be off by one season! :)

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Should we convert this to a regular season thread soon? The offseason is almost over!

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Wow. There are a ton of AHA teams getting votes in the USCHO poll. I've never seen that many.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

The media guide http://www.ritathletics.com/custompages/mhock/2011-12/2011-12 MHK Media Guide.pdf

says it was 1964 for official varsity status. There is also a full history on page 54.
Thanks for the link. I did a little research and came up with this:
http://www.ritathletics.com/hof.aspx?hof=135&path=&kiosk=
which states that "varsity hockey became reality in 1963-64 after four seasons on the club level"
and this: http://library.rit.edu/depts/archives/early-years-mens-hockey-rit, which states that "In 1961, Lou Alexander Jr., the Director of Athletics, wrote a letter to the Athletic Committee recommending that the committee approve the establishment of an intercollegiate hockey team at Rochester Institute of Technology. It was approved four years later in 1965." However, most of the information out there says that varsity hockey started at RIT in 1964. It's interesting to note that it's usually not stated it started in the 64-65 season, just 1964. I wonder what the yearbooks say from back then. Anyway, I was a spectator at the 1963-64 games... they were a lot of fun to watch with a season of 17 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie!!

I"m not surprised I got a few things wrong. If I had taken more time I could have done better.

Tanev only played 1 year so that is why I didn't include him. He had a good year, but in terms of what he did as a collegian, he doesn't compare with any of the ones I mentioned. I really debated putting him in, but really the only reason to add him is that he is the only player to make it to the NHL.

Pinner was a very good player, and certainly could have been added. I think if he had played 1 more year, I would have added him. I felt that players that won National POY needed some run.

Totally agree.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

All 6 western teams - no eastern teams...

That just shows the first poll is based more on rep than anything else; Bentley should be getting votes if RIT and Robert Morris are.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Totally agree.

I disagree, personally. For the purposes of a bunch of RIT fans I might agree, but for something going out to a wider audience of hockey fans, some of whom know little/nothing of the college game, it's much more relevant to include names that they will actually know. For all the points Lambert scored for RIT, he never even touched the professional game in the US and currently plays hockey in, wait for it...Belfast. He does not make our program look impressive or successful. That being said, I did include him - I just also included Tanev and Pinner.
