>>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

So when RIT or Air Force win, scholarships are irrelevant and when Canisius wins, they are. Give me a break.

Apologies; I misread your comment. I thought you said Canisius was irrelevant.

No worries, I thought that might have been the case. I don't like them, but I sure couldn't call them irrelevant. I still firmly believe that scholarships are very close to irrelevant for an overall strong program. E.g., I don't think they would change things greatly at RIT ... however the difference for Canisius with and without them might be huge. Or would Minnesota or B.C. really suffer all that much without them (B.C. might as they are a need-blind school with essentially no merit scholarships).

Rambling, but anyway my point is that scholarships are only one piece of a very big puzzle, and not the biggest one.

A letter from Jacob Ingebritson, platoon leader with Bravo Company, 1-211th Aviation Regiment, Task Force Storm, Shindand Air Base, Afghanistan; about his, and fellow converted Tigers fans soldiers, love of listening/watching Tigers games whilst living in a combat zone:

I think it would be really cool if RIT could get this guy and his buddies in for a game at the Ritter.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

They really should. And bring them out to center ice so we can show their appreciation. It would also be fitting if it was against Army or Air Force.

Dave Smith and Canisius deserve a lot of credit. The program was a mess in 2004, mostly because of the Athletic Director at the time. The players were not exactly choir boys at the time and got their coach fired. The AD was canned soon after and the team has taken its lumps, but is certainly turned in the right direction with Conacher, the AHA title and now a better more visible facility.

FYI

Pinner Signed with Florida today.
http://panthers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=679617

Two way deal....Hopefully he can stay healthy. Thats a team he could probably make and play his game for.
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive VP/General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms with C Steve Pinizzotto on a one-year, two-way contract.

And I though Saracino said he wasn't going to continue his hockey career?

Saw this post on Polisseni Center Construction on a new-ish RIT Blog: http://ritbehindthebricks.tumblr.co...-details-on-the-polisseni-center-construction

2 things stood out to me.
1: Food options will include a high end dining facility as well as other concession stands. Alcoholic beverages will be served for those 21 and older, but will only be available in the food court area.
2: [Corner Crew will be in] the southern curve of the new arena and the bleacher section will have 800 seats.

800 seats in Corner Crew?! BEER!!!!

Can't wait!

Have to second that. Even though I think Smith can be a bit of a hot head behind the bench he took a program on the verge of dying and surprised everyone last year with a league tournament title. Given how Canisius was thrown into tough Western POD they could have easily folded. Will be very interesting to see where they wind up this year. I am actually awaiting to preseason polls to see what kind of respect Canisius gets for their Surprise run. When you break it down I really see the league as a toss up for any team in the Western POD next year. Maybe give Niagara a little edge for what they did last year, but given what they lost in net I would not give em much.

Speaking of Conacher, there another one coming. Shane, I watched him play this year in Juniors. I got the sense (All though only 2 game sample) that he was not quite the finisher his brother was, but he was down right a play maker. Would not be surprised to see him on a list of possible AHA Rookie of the year. I think this is also where some RIT fans and those actually in the program may be in denial. Canisius has had a few players that RIT would have loved to have, but I think ended up not getting because of scholarships. I know I am going to get the finical aid and ECAC comparisons and they are some what valid. However you look at it, to me it's a fact some players will be untouchable because of the scholarship situation, some will just not consider a school no matter what you tell them...

From what I am told the beer will only be served in the club seating area and you will only ba able to get to that area with an upgraded ticket. I have no idea about cost or how that is all going to work.

Got a note from RIT regarding the Take a Seat campaign; seat selection will be coming shortly. One interesting tidbit from the letter, though: fewer than 150 people have donated enough ($1000) to get their name on a seat.

Dan Rubin, the play-by-play radio guy for Bentley, has been doing a "Know Your Enemy" series on his Bentley Hockey Blog, JAR Pride. Here is his post on RIT: http://jarpride.com/2013/08/12/know-your-enemy-rochester-institute-of-tech/

It's always interesting to me to see an outsider's perspective. I enjoyed seeing things about the "hellacious place known as Ritter Arena," but he basically summarized some of my 'fears' with the new Polisseni Center -

"Ritter Arena was smaller, with a narrower ice surface. The crowd and the Corner Crew were on top of the ice, making it tough to play at. It’ll be tough to replicate that, even if the Polisseni Center is a) amazing and b) needed. Quite simply, RIT outgrew their home, and with it, might’ve lost what made playing up there so tough to begin with."

This is my fear too. I am going to be surprised if at least some of the things that make Ritter special, specifically the feeling of the crowd being on top of the ice, is not lost with the new arena.

If the one thing that the architects didn't understand was the importance of acoustics in the ritter, then the Poli is ****ed.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers - 2013 Offseason: The Future Looks Bright <<<

You're all so dramatic. We can't stay in that dumpy old barn forever. It's uncomfortable as all hell, it's way too small, it has no modern amenities. I get the sentimental value, but I also get why having cup holders and more than 3 food choices and 1 bathroom is pretty much better.

We don't seem to have any trouble projecting atmosphere at Blue Cross. No one seems to complain that the seating there is disastrous to a fan section..I don't know why everyone assumes the Corner Crew is going to be in the rafters at the new place. I'm pretty sure that being able to seat hundreds of additional people in the Corner Crew will more than make up for the minor change in distance from the ice, and having 4500 fans cheering instead of 2100 should also greatly increase the atmosphere. Again, see Blue Cross.

As far as acoustics, Ritter was built as a figure skating rink half a century ago - it has exactly the acoustics of a big concrete rectangle. I'm confident that the engineering/science behind arena acoustics have improved in that time, especially since we're building an arena for hockey this time.

I don't think I was being dramatic, I was stating a hope (fear) that I have for the new arena with regards to how the seating is and how the feeling of being ontop of the ice is. And based upon what I have seen or more to the point have not seen with regards to how the inside of the new arena is going to be, I don't think my concerns are being dramatic.

This is exactly what I do not like about modern arenas. They are more about comfort, food, bathrooms, etc. than they are about actually watching the game and having that feeling that one is part of the game. I get it that for other people it's more important to be in a cushy seat with the fresh slice of pizza and biggie drink than it is for them to have the feel of the game. But for me it's all about feel and zero about the amenities.

I hold zero sentimental value to Ritter, but I do like the feeling of watching a game there and hope that the new arena is a least similar in feel.
