I am going to keep thie post short, simple, and not so sweet...

If you can't get 4 points against Sacred Heart, just start experimenting for next year. Just not the Melky Cabrera, Carlos Ruiz, or Yasmani Grandal kind of experimenting please...

RIT needs to take things one game at a time. I think that is the best way to play it. I don't know what you can do to expericment - there are no healthy scatches for these next 3 games.

Coach changed his philosophy a bit last year after the break because of the lack of offense. Perhaps he will be able to use this break to do something about the deefense.

Or, and I have seen this at several schools, etc., the "prime" seats in the center are all taken by season ticket holders, many of which don't bother to show up to any given game and then it looks like a somewhat empty arena. This doesn't happen now because the seats can all be filled in as general admission. That might not be the case going forward if reserved seats need to be held reserved through the whole game. Oh well, a minor tidbit to get everyone's minds off mediocre goalies and poor defenses...

You can already look to the reserved sections to see the effect. Season ticket holders don't go to every game; that's just the way it is.

Speak for yourself! I haven't missed a game yet, except for 2 Black Friday games where I was not in the Rochester area. Watched them on TV though.

Yes, but it doesn't seem quite as bad in the Ritter since it has been mostly down in a corner. In some arenas it seems like the whole middle section of lower rows is largely empty for some games.

Years ago when I went to Clarkson to watch RIT play there, the ends were full and the sides were fairly empty (maybe 25-30% full) and it really hurts the overall atmosphere. Not that I don't understand season ticket holders there skipping an early season game in RIT's 2nd (or so) season at D1. Of course, what else did they have to do up there? ;)

Watson is below 30th best. Plus, I believe he is comparing to starting goalies. If you are going to be proud of Watson being better than dozens of teams backups, more power to you, but as far as Division 1 starters we're about as far down on the list as it goes.

He got a shut out at AIC. We were swept by Holy Cross. Shutting out AIC is not exactly impressive. He only saw 19 shots of which maybe a handful were strong scoring oppurtunities.

You're right, the shutout was against AIC, my bad. But as long as we're correcting, Holy Cross didn't sweep either, the second game was a tie. And in that tie game Watson made some great saves and walked away with a .921 SV%

Survey Question -

This Friday night starts a two-game home series against lowly and winless Sacred Heart. After Sacred Heart this weekend, our schedule becomes much tougher. We have played 13 games thus far this regular season with 21 to go. We all know that all teams make the AHA playoffs, so we still have a chance to win the AHA playoffs and go to the NCAA tournament. So, no matter how we finish the regular season, technically, anything can happen.

Question:
Even though this weekend's games are not a "must wins" statistically, do we essentially need to get two wins (4 points) this weekend for us to have any "real world" hope or expectation that RIT has a chance to do well this season and in the AHA playoffs?

A.) - "Yes. RIT must sweep this 2 game home series to have any realistic chance of competing against the better teams in the AHA playoffs. Not that a sweep means we are a good team either though.
If they don't sweep S.H., the team should concentrate on developing players for next season instead of playing to win this season". This could mean: playing the freshman goalie (and/or Ruby) to get him/them experience for possibly starting next season; continuing to mix forward and defensive lines to find good combinations for next season; work on line/team chemistry and familiarity that will make us better next season; play the freshmen as much as possible to get them playing experience.

B.) - "Not really. If RIT gets at least 2 points this weekend, that will be good enough to show we still have a chance to be an elite team in the AHA. We can still be very competitive in the Conference and be successful in the Playoffs. As long as we see team improvement, two or three points will be good enough this weekend. We should make the goalie who does the best this weekend (assuming we platoon goalies) the starter for the rest of the season".

C.) - "No, the season isn't half over yet. We still have plenty of time to turn things around. We are just starting the season off really slowly. Even if we get 0 points this weekend, we can still go far in the playoffs if we get hot".

D.) - "It doesn't matter how we do this weekend. We are a mediocre team at best, that doesn't have a chance in the playoffs and has no business in the NCAAs. This season we should just hope for entertaining and competitive games, and some team improvement as the season progresses. Hopefully next season is much better".

E.) Other - make up your own answer...

kerwing7:

B. As I wrote in an earlier post, a realistic goal at this time would be to work to finish somewhere in the 5 -8 range in the standings and host a first round playoff series, playing our best hockey heading into the playoffs with a healthy team.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I have to go with E because my answer is really between A and B. I think RIT needs to take 4 points against Sacred Heart in order to have a realistic chance to have a deep run in the AHA tournament. That said, if they only get the sweep, I don't think you throw in the towel. For one, the place that needs the most improvement doesn't really have any changes that CAN be made. While I would love to tinker with the lines, I think the team needs to get healthy again. This is where the lack of depth really hurts.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I'm going to go with D because even as the best (or second best) AHA team as we were in the past, in the global NCAA landscape we were still mediocre at best.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

Was pondering A, but I have to go with D. I think I've seen enough to conclude there is no realistic chance. I think only the top 4 have a realistic chance of going to the NCAAs and I don't think RIT can get up that far.

Of course, anything can happen...

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I'm going with E.

The team needs to win these two games, if only to give the players confidence going into Niagara but I don't think it will provide any insight on how this team will play going forward.

Unless the defense can start standing up to the other teams, I don't see them going deep into the play-offs and the rest of the season is going to be a tough one to watch or listen to.

D.

It's just not there this season. We lost too much in our seniors.

(McReynolds) And thompson. We lost our Forward Enforcers and that can cause a lot of the issues we have seen. Without the enforcer it allows them to cherry pick a bit more.... and magnifies defensive mistakes and makes them less scared to get hit, makes us soft (which I think we are).

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

D.

I think we stand a good chance of getting 3-4 points this weekend, but the fact there's any doubt in our minds about that against Sacred Heart at Ritter really tells you all you need to know.

The team will getter better than we've seen, but they will still finish in the middle of the pack and definitely don't have what it takes to win it all. Getting to Blue Cross would be considered a huge success.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

D with a possibility of moving to A depending upon how the season progresses.

I don't think that RIT should (or will) give up on the season yet. But keeping on doing the exact same thing for the remainder of the season isn't smart either. If at some point the season is completely lost, then I am all for changing to option A.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

D. I think we'll beat SHU, but something's just not there this season. We're missing too many pieces to be competitive this year. We've gotten used to stellar goalies and defense that help us win games when we score 1, 2, or 3 goals, but this year it's just not clicking. While I think the team will get better as the year goes on, I'd be surprised if we went far in the playoffs. It's strange to be the underdogs this year, but maybe we needed a reality check. It's just unfortunate that we have been having an off year so far when we're constructing a brand new arena. I guess it'll matter more when we start playing the Polisseni Center. So I guess we have until Fall 2014 to get our s--- together :)

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

To answer my own survey question, I think I'm closest to A right now, with caveats.

First caveat; it's not fair or wise to base the future of the team on one or two games in early December, but for the sake of a fun survey question, I framed answer A that way. If we don't get 4 points this weekend it's probably too early to go into "let's practice for next season" mode.

Second caveat: I can see a situation where 3 points this weekend could look as positive as 4, depending on how we play. In which case, I'll reserve judgement for a couple more weeks. I can also see 4 points this weekend not being impressive at all, depending on how we play. In which case my attitude will turn to answer D.

To summarize: I guess I still have some hope this season, but I need to see us kick some a** this weekend to maintain that hope. If things don't vastly improve in the next 3-4 weeks we should reevaluate the entire team for next season and forget about this season.

I hope this isn't a cop-out to my own question :)

Good point. You're probably right. I just wanted to at least try to frame my answer in terms of the defined choices I created. Not too many things in life are that black and white though.
