I think (ok, I know) that you missed my point. I wasn't debating the value of non-conference games. In general I agree with your point on those. My point was that in comparing the team's record this season to seasons past, one needs to account for the fact that in seasons past they had played far more non-conference games by now. So in order to compare how good one may judge this team to be relative to the last few seasons at the break, that must be considered. The mid-to-late-season winning streaks happened once the Tigers got into conference play exclusively. This season, they've already played almost half of the conference schedule and have not fared as well as the last few years, especially on the road. Let's wait until the nc's are completed in just over a week and see how the record compares. If they were to get swept and fall to 8-10-2, that would be somewhat disappointing regardless of your point of view.
No I got your point and I agree it’s actually a truth, but we are looking at the big picture differently. If you look at the pure make up of last year team vs this year, and you look at the nuts and bolts and the intangibles of each team I think this year team is not as good overall as last. They are missing consistent scorer, however the blue line is much better, Goaltending is about the same, which is not a stab at Mads, I am not sure you can really ask for more than what he gave last year. In the end I do not think this is a bad thing or means the program is moving in the wrong direction.
I think it’s really a philosophy difference between the two sides here on how to look at if the program is improving or not. One side seems to black & white and goes off win & loss record. The side which seems to correspond more with my thinking that the overall record doesn’t necessarily correlate to if the program is moving in the right direction or not.
How do you judge a sport organization? Winning would be the easiest, the biggest misquote ever is Lombardi on winning. What he was really talking about wasn’t winning, is the effort and price paid to win. Because even Lombardi knows that each year there can only be one champion. The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series. They also failed to win about 80 other World Series that have been played. Only one team wins each year, which is why it is so special.
I think as long as the program is growing, RIT is in great shape, and there is no doubt they are growing. The Ultimate goal should be a National Championship. I am not willing to put a time table on it, there are still big waves of change in college hockey. Given the new arena and a possibility of going to the ECACs is very exciting times for Tigers fans. Again, given what this program has already achieve so soon is amazing and I find it extremely frustrating that some seem to think this program has under achieved in some way.
As I said non-conference games are basically meaningless, but do feel good to get a win like that yesterday. This team can play with any other team out there. So just like a few years if they make the NCAAs anything can and usually does happen.
