You have a very good idea there. With the large deaf alumni population, it would be a good idea if RIT could CC the B2 video broadcasts. I wonder if that would be possible given the current B2 technology? Hmmmm, might be worth mentioning to the administration.

Thank you sir.. and yes, it is worth mentioning... although I am not sure how many of them (deaf alumni) are big hockey fans..

I'm not sure what it might be as a percentage of alumni, but for as long as I can remember there has been a fairly substantial gathering of deaf students that come to the home games on a regular basis.

Miles of difference between regular season titles and tournament championships...we've proven that one. I disagree with your statement on its face. If we had gone out to Minnesota and taken a pair from Minnesota State, it draws attention, in a positive way, to the program. We win the AHA regular season title and its the same old crap, "well, AHA is a weak conference anyway, who cares?". Being able to be a respected and feared out of conference opponent will do a lot more for the program than another banner to hang from the rafters at the Ritter will ever do. Playing up to the level of the competition gets you ready for the tougher brand of hockey you see at tournament time, the brand that schools like AFA and Mercyhurst have dispalyed at tournament time the last couple of years, the brand of hockey we've clearly not been able to play when it counts the most.

Who freakin' cares about another banner? Win the big games, prepare for what counts most, the tournament, with its NCAA berth. Prepare to win at that level. Beating up the bottom half of the AHA has become some meaningless thing that RIT fans love to hang their hats on, just like the old days of the ECAC West, when it was RIT and everyone else.

First off - I care about banners. Believe it or not, they are hard to come by - even in the AHA. Not only that, the banenrs are something visable that you can show recuits when they come in. Do you think that saying - "Hey we beat Cornell once a couple years ago" REALLY helps in recruiting. It may work for a season or two, but I don't think it matters after that.

The reason why Coach Wilson schedules the way he does is to get tough games. Would it be great for RIT to win some of them, of course. And it gets the program noticed a bit - for a while at least.

I will agree on this. RIT does need to be able to win the AHA tournament. It will happen - and it will be sooner rather than later.

Air Force proved the AHA cannot be taken lightly come tournament time with the close loss 2 years ago and their win and OT loss last year.

And as for the "AHA is a crap conference" - that will only stop when the WHOLE conference starts winning more non-conference games - not just RIT or Air Force.

I gota jump in on this one as well...

True if we would have gone to Mankato and taken a few points that would have caught a couple heads, especially following what bently did. But beating Mankato wouldn't have given us nearly as much respect as beating the gophers did or potentially beating Wisconsin will be.

You can't discount the bottom half of the conference... Air Force is finding that out the hard way. And every time we play Holy Cross they put up a fight. And AHA will get a lot stronger next year with Niagra and Robert Morris.

Bottom line is its all about what you do in the tournament. AF got some preseason props in the polls stirring stuff up last year. This year its our turn.

Oh hell yeah I want another the AHA title banner hanging in the ritter!

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' The Ritter For Another Year

Here's what I'd like to see (in order and based on my perception of benefit to RIT and the program). Of course, I can only speak for myself.

1) NCAA Championship
2) Frozen Four
3) Big OOC Conference Win(s) in Late Spring ;)
4) NCAA At Large Berth (Ponder That)
5) NCAA Berth / AHA Tournament Championship
6) AHA Regular Season Championship (Yes, people are impressed!)
7) Big OOC Conference Wins (e.g., Minny, Cornell, etc.)
8) Big OOC Opponents in Rochester
9) More OOC Victories Overall

#1 is probably pure fantasy, but as Bemidji showed last year #2 could happen (and could happen as early as 2010!). I think #5 is a realistic expectation this year and #3 would be gravy. #4 requires a sea change and improvement from the whole league (including RIT, and a step in the right direction happens next year) ... it will happen someday to an AHA team, why not RIT. #7 has happened and will again. #8 has also happened, but needs improvement. And I'd say #9 hasn't happened yet and might not for a long time, and is closely linked to #4.

Look at that! RIT can get all the way to #2 or so without #9 EVER happening!;)

Oh, and I forgot to mention #2.5 which is a nice new arena. Another thing that will help with all the rest.

/End Lecture;)

Not bad. I would put 7 over 6 and maybe 8 too. The only people impressed with AHA titles are are AHA fans and recruits who don't know any better. If/when the conference improves then obviously AHA regular season titles would be more important. And for me 7 and 8 are one in the same.

Banners to show recruits is a nice thing, its a lot better that you can say to a recruit, hey we knocked off some pretty big OOC foes last season, got a ton of attention (which draws pro scouts, something recruits want to hear), and went to the NCAA's last season. That's a lot more impressive than some banner that says "AHA Regular Season Champs".

The reason teams like AFA are so good, among others, is that they play "up" to their competition, they have given their OOC opponents the last few seasons absolute fits and gotten a lot of attention for their ability to play that brand of hockey. I think very few potential OOC opponents take AFA very lightly anymore, with good reason. RIT is nowhere close to that yet, in terms of reputation or performance. Yes, we've beaten Cornell and Minnesota, and those are good signs, but we haven't really built on that in terms of out of conference success.

7 and 8 aren't the same thing for this reason...road wins against OOC opponents are more highly valued than home ones at this stage of the game. There is a perception (right or wrong) that sometimes occurs when a big name OOC team gets knocked off on the road (the they got ambushed theory, or they were flat, etc.). There is no excuse for a big time team from big time conference to get rolled at home by what is viewed as a lesser opponent and that generally gets more positive notice for the winning side, for whatever reason. I have family in Minnesota, who are UM alums, and there were some SERIOUSLY upset people when RIT came in and beat them in their own tournament.

I understand where you are coming from. I was going from the perspective of recruiting and overall respect of the program. While we (RIT fans) and Minny fans remember that RIT beat Minny at Minny, do most other people and recruits? I don't think so. But they (maybe) remember that RIT beat Minny. And for a recruit I don't think it matters all that much where the game was played. Just my $.02 on it. Either way I think they are more important the regular season titles at this point.

As a hockey fan, I agree that AHA titles aren't THAT impressive, but that's why I said the list was for benefit to RIT as a whole. When the Pres. Destler goes on the road and brags about how we recently moved up and already won two titles, that impresses a lot of people. Largely that's because they aren' college hockey fans, but regardless that is great PR for RIT, fundraising, getting a new arena, etc.

I agree but I would think it shouldn't matter what league you are in, a championship is a championship, granted the AHA may not be statistically the strongest Conference, but winning it enables you to go on to bigger and better things. You do get a banner if you go to the NCAA's even if you don't win. Another way to get in good recruits is a nice place to play. Look at all the new facilities being built in Div. 1 for basketball and football, etc.. I guess it is true that if you build it, they will come.

Banners are earned with consistency and perseverance, which goes a long way towards earning respect in the hockey world.

Big OOC games can be stolen for a variety of reasons before reality sets back in. We beat a depleted Minnesota squad one night in '07, and got crushed by 6 goals the next night against BC. That year we could not beat Connecticut, and we lost to AIC. Twice. It is the only season we netted fewer than 20 wins as a DI program. We put up our worst performance at the BCA in our short DI history: a 5-0 lopsided loss to Air Force. And it is the only year so far that we did not earn at least a piece the AHA regular season title.

Which means - you guessed it - no banner, no championship, and no NCAA tournament that year.

But I guess we can say we beat Minnesota.

Agreed. Win and the list takes care of itself. Heck, 4, 7, and 8 don't need to happen for #1 to happen.

#7 most certainly has to happen for #1 to happen, unless you're expecting nothing but upsets in the conference tournaments.

But no one's saying that we have to beat OOC opponents to do well come tournament time. But they are an indicator, which is all I've been saying. They aren't meaningless.

Of course, when we moved to D-I, we lowered our standards for what gets a banner. =) I don't think we have banners for winning ECAC West regular-season titles. =)

I seem to remember seeing a single banner above the entrance doors to the arena that lists all of the ECAC West regular-season titles. (New titles were added as the years went on.) I could be mistaken, though...

I didn't count the NCAA tournament as part of #7.

OOC games don't indicate much - see 2 years ago when RIT beat Minnesota and Cornell, but lost to AIC twice (in part costing the Tigers a regular season title which would have allowed RIT to avoid Air Force in the semis that year). RIT schedules the toughest games they can, if I understand Coach Wilson's philosophy based on an interview I did with him a couple years ago.

They aren't completely meaningless, since if RIT manages to go 5-2 or something like that in the games they have a shot at an at-large. However, they serve the purpose to face tougher competition so that the team is tournament ready.
