According to the Worcester Telegram, citing multiple sources, Holy Cross has been approached about replacing Notre Dame in Hockey East when the Fighting Irish leave after the 2016-17 season. That move potentially means the Crusaders would play their home games at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., sharing the building with the new Worcester Railers of the ECHL that begin play with the 2017-18 season. Former Michigan Tech head coach Jamie Russell is the Railers’ […]Possibly related:

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

Not surprising since they are testing it this year with both BC and PC playing them in the DCU Center. How this shakes up the leagues is still to be seen with the Alaska situation still in doubt and AHC going full scholarship which may have happened a little too late to stave off a new set of revisions.

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

Can't wait to see how the NCHC reacts to this news now that their "super conference" is being directly challenged by Hockey East.
Time to blow up Eastern hockey I guess... Let the shuffling begin.

We've been trying to find the escape hatch in AH for years, shuffle away!

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

Holy Cross is a perfect fit into the HEA mold. I hope this does officially happen. I would prefer the league not move to 11 teams...I hate having teams sitting on Friday/Saturday night's in February. Everyone should be playing conference games those nights!

HEA left the Nacho in their wake some time ago....

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

You NCHC guys have it right. Those glorious 3 to 4 hour plane trips followed by a measly 30 minute bus ride to the rink while this adds another excruciating 45 minute bus ride for half the league. Wonder if they will split the league between public and privates seeing that the 6 privates are a geographic fit. BC could sure use the money saving on bus rides to the hinterlands of Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and the far west of Massachusetts. Those rides of 90 minutes and in the case of Vermont 3 hours and Maine 5 hours are harmful to our student athletes.

How exactly would this blow up Eastern Hockey? IF this happens, Atlantic Hockey loses one team with the ECAC and HE being set at 12 teams each. Atlantic Hockey would be at 10...no issues there.

UConn is two hours from Boston, UMass is the same, and UNH is an hour and a half. How come no concern when BC athletics take those weekly plane trips to the Carolinas?

That was just JJ's sticky post to all posts about a team switching conferences.

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

This would work to add to the "Turnpike Trophy" nonsense BU athletics is trying to make a thing.
Basically BU athletics vs Holy Cross athletics. 1 point per win across any sport. Most points at the end of the year wins the trophy.

"rivalry"...........

Disagree. I would think that HC would want to join the ECAC since they view their academics as on a par with the Ivies (it isn't). There are worse teams out there for HE to add, but there are certainly more attractive teams as well. HC has regional pull as a school. The Q will soon have a national audience, if they don't already. There are good reasons for the Q to stay where they are, but that is the team HE should be trying to add. On the other hand, as a Mainer, perhaps having HC to kick around instead of getting kicked around by the Q isn't such a bad scenario. ;)

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

This is probably not going to happen, at least at the DCU center. Two major hockey programs trying to share the same building? Ask UMass Lowell how that worked out for them when the Lowell Devils of the AHL shared the same building. Granted, the Pro team in there now is an ECHL team but that doesn't make much of a difference. The DCU center is also a major concert venue. The loss of additional concert weekend dates would not help the Worcester economy.

Re: Report: Holy Cross to replace Notre Dame in Hockey East?

Hasn't UConn shared the XL Center in Hartford with an AHL team the last couple years?
