Re: Rep Retirement Thread 133: I still hate you all

Congrats ewe!

Bigblue,

The issue with not taking the FE when you are in school, or shortly after, is, what if you don't stay where you are? What if you want to go out and consult on generator issues some day? A PE after your name can make you much more marketable in many areas. There is also a drive in many states to say you can't even call yourself an engineer without the PE. Believe me, if you decide later you want to get it, it is way harder to take the FE after 15 years out of school than if you take it right after graduation.

Re: Rep Retirement Thread 133: I still hate you all

Transfering schools is a pita and will add at least ~1/2 of a semester. Add in taking a co-op/internship for a semester and your looking at 5 years to graduate most likely.

Where do you get $36k a year for Iowa? Out of state tuition is ~$18k (that's what my bills say, then the university pays it). The other 18K are living expenses? Get a job, seriously. Work on campus for your first two years and then find a prof to work with in research for your next two.

If you have your heart set on going to Iowa; my advice would be to strongly consider moving to Iowa for a year, live and work to get residency then go to Iowa with in-state tuition. Not sure that it would be the best option for you, but it is would save you up to $18k in tuition (minus the cost of living in Iowa for a year over what you make working). Transfering means that you never get the chance to build those lifelong friendships that are formed living in the dorm that first year (or two). Just something to think about.

I know it, I've definitely thought about it, my grandparents live down there, but I've decided that if I take a year off of school, it'll be to play junior hockey rather than work.

Mornin' Everybody! FRIDAY!!:)

goldy, you're old...;):o

We had a presentation from a group of engineers here in Mankato today, it was really cool to see how all of this mess that I've been learning can be applied to real life.

they talked of a group they work with at MSU called Engineers Without Borders, and they're trying to find better ways for the people in el salvador to get water. They surveyed with the straightest bamboo sticks they could find..it was so interesting, i love it, that would be such a cool experience someday!

I recommend the Without Borders opportunities if you do get one. I'd like to do one for nursing when I'm done with school.

Just got word back on my car (need it registered & inspected by the end of the month): exhaust leak in the flex front pipe with damaged O2 sensor and new converter. Parts and labor running me about 1350$ (which was way less than I was quoted last place I went to and last time I had the stupid O2 sensor fixed (different car)). Thank goodness my tax refund came in today. :o Looks like it'll go to registration of the car in NH (!! :D ) and to the inspection/repairs. (Thinking BSTNEWE for my plates)

Morning Lodge.

Back at the dawn of time, while dinosaurs still roamed the earth and I was starting the U of MN IT, freshman Physics was known as the weed-out class.

I foolishly signed up for a brand new class (anyone sense a potential problem here?) called "Computer Oriented Calculus." What a effing disaster! I was in the first class of this thing, no real book, TAs didn't know what the hell was going on either. Class started with like 150 students in three sections and was down to about 40 in one section by the end of 3rd quarter. Understand children, that to run a program back then we punched the commands line-by-line in Fortran on "IBM" cards then submitted them to the computer center where they were fed in and returned to us some hours, or days, later along with the output sheets.

BTW, I found "Linear Algebra and Differential Equations" to be the hardest math class I had to take.
For the first course that I took involving computing, a numerical analysis course in the fall of 1966, we had to write code on computing forms, and someone in the computing lab would then punch cards, invariably with errors. So before we could debug our code, we had to debug someone else's key-punching. What a PitA.

By the time I left RPI, we were using keypunches. It was the still that situation when I started to work in 1974.

Looking forward to a nice weekend as the weather guessers are saying it'll be in the mid to high sixties with abundant sunshine. I hope everyone's day passes quickly and that you enjoy the weekend.:)

We had the option of filling out forms and letting someone else punch the cards, or finding a free punch machine and doing it ourselves. After having the same issues you cite, I always tried to do them myself.

The engineers without borders comment reminds me. I need to try to get in touch with a facility engineer I worked with several years ago. He worked with a group to get surplus medical equipment and send it abroad where it's needed. One of my clients (the one in Goshen, IN) has a medical vacuum pump that's surplus and in great shape that they would donate. They are expensive!

I'm definitely going to look into it if the opportunity presents itself, it looks like it would be an excellent experience.

You sure that wasn't before the dinosaurs? :D :p

Re: Rep Retirement Thread 133: I still hate you all

G'morning ****stain.

So, a couple days ago, there were three women that visited the lab to observe our workload. Since it wasn't particularly busy on my shift when they were there, I mouthed off to them quite a bit and goaded one into taking my picture.

They gave a presentation yesterday to lab management and the picture was used (heard about it this morning from a senior tech). :D

And it was labled "lazy a-hole who was doing nothing but giving us a hard time", right?

For the record, I'm not lazy - it just happened to be a slow morning (the slowest of the week). :p

And I wasn't giving them *that* rough a time. They were clearly entertained by my antics.

They definitely liked me better than the evening shift, who I heard flatly told them to get out of their way.

As of now, they're unable to activate me on my flight which means I'm sooooort of stuck in the Honolulu airport. Regardless, I have to spend the night in Minneapolis. This. Sucks.

I didn't want to leave Hawaii, but at the same time, at this point, I just want to be home :(

Apply for a job, and find a room for rent in Honolulu and then that will be home. :) It's not like you are tied down to any particular location at your age.

Also, what does "activate my flight" mean?

I'm on a buddy pass, which is a whole other world that you don't want to get involved in.
Also, if the cost of living wasn't so high, I would.

Re: Rep Retirement Thread 133: I still hate you all

Afternoon. Working on our ship today loading all the stores they will use for the upcoming cruise that I won't be a part of. Rough estimate at this point is ~10 tons of stuff, ranging from drink syrups to paper supplies to cleaning chemicals to flour/rice. Yep, getting a good workout in this morning.

Maybe if you hadn't bailed on the F4 someone in TC might be willing to save you from a night in the airport.
