Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 94: Holidays, tournaments, presents and snow!

For those who haven't heard, Anchorage is now all but a done deal. I got the Memorandum of Understanding today (the form that says "yeah, I agree to move here and finish my two years, and in exchange you give me an official job when I finish") from the head engineer up there, and the official date we've set is March 14.

I'm going to see about sneaking up a week early to look around for an apartment. If anything, turns out I have friends from high school up there, and I can always crash with them :D

Plan for my car is to ship it to my sister (she wants it, she hasn't had a new car since high school) and buy a new one when I get to Anchorage.

I'll probably end up flying - taking the ferry would involve a drive across the Rocky Mountains in winter-ish conditions to Washington where the ferry launches. Plus there's no guarantee I'd get anywhere near Anchorage.

As for my stuff, I'm torn between having it shipped or just selling it all and starting from scratch. I don't have much - my biggest valuables aside from clothes, etc. are my TV (off-brand, could get an equally big name brand now for a reasonable price,) my XBox 360 (kinda want to sell and get a PS3,) my laptop, and Quinne (already been arranged courtesy of the fine folks at ArachnoBoards.) That's all I'd really need to bring - anything else could either be furnished or picked up again cheap. Work would pay for the shipping too, but it'd take a long time to arrive from what I hear.

Well, due to my FFL good luck, I may be interested in your 360. Best part is, you could just leave it with SloeVag and T. That is, if you are just going to sell it anyways. :)

But man, this is a HUGE move. Hope you love it, and it works out for ya.

Definitely a huge move. Something tells me Twitch will love it up there though.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 94: Holidays, tournaments, presents and snow!

That was an interesting shopping trip. Ran into an AC hockey coach and chatted with him for a few minutes. Nice visit, good guy. Then I went to the grocery store. Everyone is wandering aimlessly around the aisles. I was one of them, as I usually don't go to this place. :o

Oh, and the kid braying like a donkey in aisle 10. That was lovely. An old guy next to me turned and looked in his general direction at the same time I did. By the time I got to aisle 5, the kid was still in aisle 10, and he sounded partly like a donkey, and partly like a submarine that was getting ready to dive. I could hear him a third of the way across a Meijer store, for those of you around Michigan.

Now...what to eat for dinner. Pizza, pasta, or beans n franks?

JFC. Where were his parents??

Get up so you're not staring at the ceiling! :p

Win.

I have him on ignore- he is invisible (unless someone quotes him:mad: )

Ditto.

Same here. But I can see why 'Diva wouldn't give him a hug :p

SHH! Don't mention us in the same sentence! He'll just come here and spew more. Sihtsiht!

I would like to find, or if I had any idea what to do, make a script for greasemonkey or similar thing that would delete those as well.

That would be great.

And DaveStPaul is my new second favorite poster. Thanks, Dave.

I take it you aren't working for the gov't anymore?

I'd say your biggest problem is moving to alaska... i'd have to think anywhere else in the country, save hawaii, you'd get your stuff in reasonable time.

edit: an entire website dedicated to spiders!?! Ewww. *crawls away sideways*

Alaska is a whole 'nother animal. Ask duper (poster on the boards) or watch Ice Road Truckers (similar, but not exactly the same, but you'll get the idea). Remote, few roads, etc.

Nope, still at the VA.

How my "internship" works is I do one year here, one year elsewhere, then I get my "official" job at elsewhere.

Anchorage is the exception. That's actually what led me to choose it - I still get the beauty of Alaska, but I get a 300K city with everything you'd expect and everything you need (believe it or not, Anchorage would be the largest city I've ever lived in by a factor of about 4.)

Oh geez, so shoot me for calling him that horribly insensitive god-awful name. But then you're also going to have to shoot a lot of other people, and Dirty twice for coming up with it.

He has a popular name. Excuse me (and everyone else) for using that name so we don't have to respond to the question of "******* who?" every time we have to talk about him.

This is the most ridiculous argument. And I'm sorry, I realize it's not the greatest nickname, but it stuck, and that happens.

While I don't pretend to know, or want to know, your personal finances, just be careful on unloading too much stuff. A) Things are stupid-expensive in AK. Shipping costs are unreal. B) One of the biggest mistakes newly graduated students make is buying brand new vehicles. The extra costs, and high insurance rates on 1) new cars and 2) young drivers, make them some of the worst financial decisions ever. Add to that, newly graduated college kids typically have not so great credit ratings, meaning that if they're approved for a loan, the rates are *-me-in-the-*-prison high.

After that, have at it, hot dog boy.

I bought a brand new $45,000 truck within a month of graduating, and its worked out well for me! :p But my credit rating was stellar, and I got a great interest rate, despite having just recently graduated.

Well, lah-tee-fricking-da, Abbie Normal. I made my post trending towards the averages, not the negative outliers.

I'm over 25 with a fairly good record, so insurance is a lot less for me. I get full coverage for something like $80 a month on my Olds Alero. My credit is pretty good I think - I pay my bills way ahead of time (usually as I receive them) and I get good use out of my one credit card and keep a healthy balance. The only nick I can think of is that I was signed up for a Christian magazine as a prank in college, and I got a letter from them threatening to go to collections when they kept sending me issues after the subscription ran out. My father sent them a nasty letter and I never heard from them again.
