Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

I got a couple grand back, but I have a very simple tax form. One job, renter's credit, and that's about it.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

I made less money in 2015 than I did in 2014 and I paid more in taxes (work switched me to a different bonus plan that paid out in Jan 2016). Maybe refinancing my mortgage wasn't a great plan. Except that having less mortgage interest to deduct means I paid a lot less mortgage interest. Yeah, ok, all good.

Call me liberal, but I have a decent job and live comfortably, I'm happy to pay my share of taxes for things that benefit the common good. I may never be able to afford a McMansion or every new Apple product that comes out, but those are things I don't need.

In non-political talk: Good morning Lodge. Hockey tonight! Perhaps my team can break their 3 game losing streak.

This- both taxes and hockey. We don't pay but that is because of what we declare. The guy who does our taxes always looks at what could happen and advises us what would be best so we don't owe at the end.

Playing Scarlet and mookie's team tonight. Someone will be at the *HT. Having 'grown up' having a tradition of losing to BU with all sorts of odd circumstance I go into the weekend with trepidation.

Good Morning Lodge.

If they don't I will get to see a trophy raising tonight after the game I'm going to. yipee, the best of the worst? I could make a very politically incorrect comment to compare this trophy to a particular medal, but I won't. If the Gophs get a point against the lowly stinkin BADgers they will raise the trophy regardless of the outcome in AA (is a whore).

ETA: Mrs Goldy is busy doing our taxes today. We have to do it late as some stocks she inherited from her dad don't send out a statement till the very latest they are allowed to by law. Besides which she arranges our deductions so that we will pay in at tax time. No point in giving the gov any interest free loans.

Agreed. What really bothers me is how much Uncle Sam takes from my bonus. Nearly 40%!!!!!!

Meanwhile, I was talking to a person the other day that does not work and more than likely is living off the system. They commented that they are getting back nearly $2,500 from the Feds in tax returns. How does that happen?!?!?
It pays more to be a leech than to work. I got a 7k raise this year, a great raise. My taxes went up 7k. Why do I even try? Its not worth it.

At the risk of sounding glib: It's time to raise that 401(k) contribution rate to reduce your taxable income. max out the contribution, if you must.

Hey! Don't try to out-Opposite Girl Opposite Girl.

:p

That said - yeah, this weekend scares me. A lot.

Given that the game tonight is at 7:30 and the fact that I picked up my tickets already, I took the T in to work today to avoid paying for parking. Gonna leave work at 4, take the T home and then drive up from home. I miss all the downtown Boston traffic on a Friday. Not sure about food, though.

I just sent my taxes in on Monday. Getting a decent federal refund, though, like wT, I refinanced so since I'm paying less interest on my mortgage, I can't deduct as much so it's much smaller than it has been in the past. My accountant guy says "But you have more money in you pocket!" Um, no, doesn't work that way. For me anyway. My state refund is also much smaller. $77. I am getting my hair done this weekend so I think I will put it back into the economy and add some highlights!

Since the highest marginal tax rate is about 42.5%, if you had not gotten any raise your taxes would still have gone up this year by about $4,000 because something else changed from last year. Either you didn't get some tax credit this year that you did last year, you have much smaller total deductions, or some input or computational error occurred in one of the years.

Tell that to TurboTax. I spent 3 hours last night trying to find a mistake. Didn't find one. Deductions were only slightly lower this year than last. Also, somehow, over the year there was less taken out of our checks this year than last, even though both years both me and my wife claimed the same for withholding, and we were married both years. Even though we made more this year. Its all idiocy.

With your $7K pay raise, you might have jumped tax brackets, which can account for such a drastic change.

Turbo Tax is a crock. We used that a few yrs then mr les went to a tax guy after it said we owed. He came home with us getting a huge refund. Worth it to go get them done.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Looks like I'm going back to CT on the 21st and 22nd. On-site with Yale. The Ivies tried to grill me about my experience on our introductory call. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Nervous as well for our playoff match up. One of the best rivalries in college hockey, in the playoffs? Ugh.

Don't get me started on tax stuff. Although hopefully last year will be my worst one for a while, with my taking a pay cut essentially. Haven't even looked at any of my tax stuff yet though.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Gorgeous weekend for weather here. Hope to get errands done in the morning tomorrow, before killing the afternoon on the patio with a good book.

Last weekend of regular season hockey. The end is near. :( If I end up at the *HT this weekend...God help all the kittens of the world.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Yes.

Did some pre-season catch and release trout fishing today on a gorgeous sun splashed day in a farm/forest valley in western Wisconsin.

Caught several nice brookies.

Lost two really nice browns - the first when I almost fell on my *** as I sunk into muck stepping into the river to land him and the other when my line snapped.

Best outdoor day I've had in a while. Was just gorgeous out there and the river was a candy store with aggressive fish in every other hole.

The other three guys I was with got multiple fish too.

Can't wait to go back.
