Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

One more final to go, and then I'll finally be hitting the home stretch, one year to go!

My son is finishing his finals this week then it's one semester left until the real world (real, not mtv real crap... :D ) is knocking on his door. :)
Though now he's threatening law school.....

Good Morning Lodge.

Hey, one of the players for Henderson/LeSuer/St. Peter who beat your boys last night is a relative. If I understand these things, my cousin, twice removed. My cousin's grandson, #11 for them. What's happening to your squad?

We're sick, beat up, and not willing to work hard. It's embarrassing right now. We couldn't even hold practice Wednesday because we wouldn't have had enough kids. Kids are letting it be there excuse, and we're just flat out getting outworked right now.

Jr started coaching with a squirt C team last night. Now we need to get him certified by Dec 31, what a mess to get through these days. Coaching clinic, then Safe Sport on-line, then age specific modules on-line. BTW, their travel tournament is in Mankato! At least he won't need a hotel room.

What's worse is they make you re-cert every year now with continuing ed.

I coached for 10 years and was level 3 when I finished 2 years ago. Now I'd have to start over as it has lapsed.

Not that I plan on coaching anymore, but still...

Nope. Not yet.

The weekend is still young!!

Happy Friday peeps. Off today. Dropped my car off for its 50,000 mile check up. I'm at my parents' place now - their apartment is down the street from the dealership. Waiting here, and a little later we're all going to meet with their financial adviser. Good times.

Anyone listen to the Serial podcast? Just binge listened to it the last few days. Wow! What a gripping true story.

I thought the Level 3 had been extended to last three years?
Either way I'm not coaching anymore; which is good for the kids. :)

Level 1 was the worst....this is a puck.

I don't know although the last time I did continuing ed would be 3 years ago, so I'd be out anyway.

Seriously. I won a pee wee state championship coz I had the guts to bench the worthless players and feature the good ones - especially my own son. Do they really think I'm gonna forget how to do that without continuing ed?

:D

So how many parents complained to you afterwards that their kid didn't play?

Might wanna check your sarcasm/joke meter...

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

What I said that I did would run counter to what USA Hockey would teach and is part of the reason that they have a coaching certification process in the first place. ;)

I have heard of it, but I don't know how to podcast so I haven't watched it.

It's audio only, and available at http://serialpodcast.org

You can download each episode or it play it directly through the website (which is what I did to listen (via my work android)).

It's a true story of a 15 year old murder case that was recorded over the last year, with the narrator doing more research into the case than either the prosecution or defense did. The latest episode (11) brings the story the closest to real time by discussing the rumors and reactions that have surfaced since the radio program started.

Next week is the final episode, but the conclusion isn't going to be neat and tidy considering the lead doesn't go in front of the parole board until next month.

On that note though, we did shorten the bench a bit in the championship game and had certain lines out there for faceoffs in our zone etc. Especially in the 3 overtimes. Wasn't gonna lose the game to get ice time for kids who weren't giving their all - and we had a few of them and it was obvious... all season (career) long.

One of the parent(s) who had a comment after we won the title were of a kid who got shorted and are coaches themselves. A kid who during one of the overtimes shouted at me that it was "HIS TURN!" They said, "Great job. You did the right thing." And they meant it as they reiterated it on future occasions as they battled with trying to mold their son into an athlete that would actually give a decent effort.

The next season, my son was in a similar situation (weaker player) and heading into the championship game, I approached the head coach (I was not coaching that season) and told him to do whatever it takes to win the title and he'd hear no complaints from me. On the bench during the game as my son (and a couple of others) was getting passed over, he approached my son to try and explain it to him and my son cut him off mid sentence with, "Don't worry coach, it's about the team right now, not me." The other players who were getting passed over weren't so gracious.

Coach told that story during his speech (omitting the part about the other players - which he only told to me) at the celebratory banquet and actually choked up and had to regain his composure. This coach was a former Badger player with a relatively hard exterior. That was a proud moment for me and it was a time that my kid didn't actually get to play much. He was a 2nd year pee wee at the time.

He went from winning a state championship as one of the go to guys to winning a state championship as a role player the next year. The pee wee years were awesome. :D

Huh. Ok. I figured there was some special app or something. I'll probably listen to it sometime when I'm just doing busywork at work. I need to wait until my data turns over to the next month though, as we're running low, or use my work phone, I guess.
