Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #161: Needs More Wub
Another week of work. Going over to Green Bay for a few days to get some work done there this week.
Weekend was good. Went out for a nice dinner (including some really good beer) Friday night. (Happy Knome in St. Paul, for the locals)
On Saturday.......:
We (Girlfriend and I) decided to go to Crashed Ice. We walked to Burrito Loco, in Dinkytown, to catch a shuttle. We were there early, so we went in to get drinks. The bouncer asks us if we're going to Crashed Ice, we say yes, and he gives us some gold wristbands. We had no idea what that meant, since as far as we knew, it was free to go to Crashed Ice. We get our drinks, 2 for 1's, so it was pretty cheap, then get on the bus and head to St. Paul. We get to St. Paul at 5:00, 2 hours before the event actually starts, so we decide to go down to West 7th and find some food. Eagle Street is packed....McGovern's is packed....Burger Moe's is packed, and we end up at Tom Reid's, which is actually not too busy. We walk in, and bouncer asks Girlfriend for her ID, she doesn't want to dig her ID out of clothes, because we're bundled up for the Crashed Ice, and shows bouncer her wristband from Burrito Loco, he responds with "OK, the VIP room is in back". VIP room? We go to the back room, and there is a sign that says "Private Party" we walk in, and another bouncer asks to see our wristbands, we show him, and he gives us another one, which we later found out was good for free drinks at Reid's. In the backroom was a free buffet with poutine, 2 kinds of wings, 2 kinds of meatballs, brats, jalapeno poppers, fried ravioli, fruits and veggies, nachos....All was very tasty, and FREE. Turns out the free drinks were red bull based (which makes sense), and beer. I had a couple beers, but then switched to some green Red Bull and liquor combination that was actually not terrible. Had 3 of those, including 3 entire cans of Red Bull, and the fuse was lit on the night. I went back to get 2 more of the Red Bull drinks before we left, and filled 4 empty Red Bull cans with the alcoholic version, and we were on our way to the Crashed Ice. We ended up meeting up with 2 of my buddies on the way to the Cathedral. We go up to the "Crash Zone" which was where they served beer. Got in free with our wristbands (up until this point we have spent about $10 total for the entire night, for 2 of us. My Red Bulls were gone by this point, so we finally have to spend money and get some Grain Belt, and ended up spending $20 for beer. The Crashed Ice itself was actually really fun. It was hard to see too much of the course, but they had huge video screens to show the races when the course was out of view. Turns out a kid from my high school, graduated a year after me was in it. He won his first heat, and was leading his second heat with about a quarter of the track left and stumbled and lost out on the transfer spot. Also recognized some former college hockey players in the names of competitors. Afterwards, there was an after party that we could have gone to, with our wristbands, with some Little John guy singing, but girlfriend said I wouldn't like it, so we decided to go to McGoverns. There were more people at McGoverns than I have ever seen before a Wild game, or during Final 5. There had to be thousands of people in there. We left right away, and caught a cab out of St. Paul, since it was pretty obvious that St. Paul couldn't handle 120,000 people pouring out of Crashed Ice wanting beer.
Definitely going back to it next year.
