So, this year instead of getting "x days of vacation" my company finally converted to "earned hours per month," (standard personal time off). Carryover limit is 40 hours, you lose the extra hours after that. Well, some people didn't realize how exactly it all worked out (including me, I was wondering if Dec's earned hours counted for this year or next). There are people who apparently are losing 30-40 hours of PTO.

I'm only losing 6 hours, due to some bad math, so no big deal on my end. Also found that given how long I've been there, I will earn 5 weeks and 1 day of vacation next year. That doesn't include my 40 carryover from this year. :D

Given that you are so short staffed that you have overtime nearly everyday, this seems like it could come back to bite mgnt as people will be far more careful to not lose vacation time next year.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 139: The Halloween Edition

So it ends up my regular boat is down here in Htown loading overnight, and should be moving by noon tomorrow. I'm going to be trying to get on it while it is in the area a couple days early, since sitting around here is very, very boring.

Also found out I'll hopefully be turned loose on my own (taking my own watch of a boat) between March and April, if all goes well. Big increase in pay, and being able to do things how I want to do them (safely, mind you ;)) will be a very nice thing within a year of starting.

We've actually hired 4-5 new people in the last month or two (I don't notice, because I'm only at the main building for about an hour at the end of the night, if that). But we will see more balanced out PTO taken, instead of all this cramming at the end of the year.

I doubt that will happen, people will still try and cram it all in at the end of the year because they still won't take enough over the course of the year.

I'm not sure the US Coasting Guard would like my argument that I was going ramming speed to try to save the company tim... I mean money ;)

I'm pretty happy I don't need to figure out when to take my PTO. Granted, I can't take off time for stuff I would like to do (F4 in Tampa, etc), but I'll take the tradeoff of a day off for each 2 days worked. So whether I'm on a 20 day work schedule or 28 or 30, whatever the case is, I get half of that off afterwards.

Nope. DHBoss is going to require you turn in at least 10 requested days before the end of January (5 in the first half of the year, and 5 in the second half). Dunno if he can legally do that, and I don't care either way since I know of about 3 weeks' worth of time I already want off, but that's how it's shaking down right now.

Edit: there are only 3 people with 10 years there, including me. The rest are around 5 years max (about 3 weeks vacation).

If you figure it out, that's roughly the same for a full-time 9-5 type job. There are 365 days in the year, split into 52 weeks, 1 day remainder. Taking two days off each week, that's 104 of 365 not at work. Then add in (for me) 25 days of PTO, and and another 8 federal holidays, and I'm off 137 of 365 days. That's slightly better than 3/8 days I'm not at work. You're sitting at roughly 1/3 not at work. This 9-5 guy gets more leisure time than you, though just not generally in as large of chunks.

Yeah, it's messed up when you think about it like that. I get 1.5 months off just on PTO. That's sick. And if you add in the fed holidays....JFC.

Honestly, the last few years, I have been taking random days off just to keep me under my max carryover. This next year, I prob will just take every Fri off when the Gophers play, so I can at least be home to watch them.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 139: The Halloween Edition

Morning!

I request 95% of my PTO for the new year at the end of the current one. In fact I have already requested all of the 2012 dates I want. I have 40 hr rollover and 3-5 more days to play with.

All of next years major holidays are midweek. Sucks, since it costs more PTO, but does give me a week off. :D

Good Morning, Lodge!

I leave tomorrow to go back to Wisconsin. The funeral is on Saturday.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 139: The Halloween Edition

Look at the bright side, you haven't been shot yet.

And the new terminal is pretty nice. Be glad it wasn't 15 years ago when the Detroit airport was like Detroit itself. Looked like a third world airport. I always expected to see someone with a cage full of chickens for their carryon.

About 6 (?) years ago I took a cab from downtown to the airport. The cabby took me to the old building! It had been closed for years.
