Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

After trying and hating the Schell's Stag Series Rauchbier (it tastes like campfire, literally), and still having 4 bottles of the sixer left from the F4, MNS (and whoever else wants to join) decided to have a beer-brat/hockey day at Chez Rube. Hopefully that smoky taste of the beer works with the brats. Otherwise I think that beer will be sitting around for a long, long time.

What else is there to do on a dreary, cold-ish, rainy day? I don't even remember what the sun looks like anymore.

I need to move home...

CC to 'Bob: Sorry I missed your call. I was doing homework and didn't know the phone rang. Good job on the run!! :)

Thanks for confirming. I saw that at my beer store the other day, though I hate smoked beers (I think they taste like that liquid smoke concentrate), so I wouldn't have gotten it anyway.

I don't mind hints of it, but this was insane.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

I did mow, but now I've got to go buy a new trimmer, since I went HAMMER-SMASH!!! on my old one last year. It was a piece of ****.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

Ugh, I don't know how you guys all deal with this real world stuff... I get to the weekend, all I want to do is nap on the couch and surf the internet while I force myself to do chores... anything more would overdo it.

Well, I do that, too. The laundry gets done in the evenings, as I can veg out in the happy chair and bang on a keyboard here. It takes about 1.5 hours to mow, so that's not too bad. When I cook, I usually cook for about 3-4 days worth at a time.

Yep. With my dishwasher, I usually load that up on a workday, start it up and leave for work. For laundry, I'll watch a movie or something while it's being done. You just have to find a way to efficiently do chores while continuing to veg out or whatever.

Maybe its the combo of insane work, gym, and no car feeding in together... I feel like I just cycle each week. I can't wait until this project is over (difficult, sensitive, frustrating, and all on my shoulders... responsible for both methodology and production).... it'll be a big load off of my mind and my stress. It wasn't this difficult when I was interning... that was a great summer. I think its more that my body and mind feels like it needs to catch up. Saturday is a decompression day for sure.

You know, the more I do, I think its more about the project and what it represents. Basically if I get it done then I've more than established my technical/scientific abilities, feel like I'm no longer playing from behind, I'll validate my degree (I don't feel like I've quite earned it), achieved the status level I know I can reach, etc. But, in the effort I'm so completely wiped out from a mental and spiritual perspective.

Sorry to vent but I need to... so much potential but so much to work through and its difficult. It really didn't help when our lead researcher left and made me lead on this... I told him that while him leaving gave me an opportunity I'd rather take the project ending in a success than more opportunities 'cause I'll get what i want if its successful (basically I said, "but I don't want more opportunity")

You know, I think there have been some things that have prepped me for what I've had to go through for this project... if I didn't go through hell in my last year of grad I wouldn't be able to handle these levels of frustration, stress, and pressure... and if I hadn't gone through that last year of a project that I felt hurt our credibility then I wouldn't have nearly the amount of familiarity with the files and related information as well as my improved computational abilities. I'd like to think this means we'll get through it and finish successfully... but to be honest, I'm sick of having to plow through things to get where I can be... too draining.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

evening lodge.

test drove cars today, and i'm now down to the volkswagen tiguan and the mazda cx7. i'll continue doing research this week, then head back to syracuse thurs or fri to do one last comparison test drive before deciding. i'll be buying one of them before the weekend, quite exciting. Really like the tiguan, but the mazda has some pros too. gonna be a tough decision, but i'll like either one. anybody heard anything positive/negative about either one?

Ever heard anyone say anything good about a VW lately? mechanically they are junk, exception might be a TDI vehicle, other than that they have reliability issues

No opinion on either thing... just jealous that you're getting a car... one day... one day... seriously though, must be exciting buying your first new car.

I'm pretty sure you have a higher-paying job than I do, and maybe some down payment money. I bought my Jeep with $500 down, no trade-in, and no credit history. No, I probably didn't get the best interest rate because of those things, but I also managed to afford the payments with a little budgeting. If you really want to do something, just make it *ing happen.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

First car? I bought my first the day I turned 15.

My first car was when I was 19, when I left college. Didn't really need one in Duluth. Had friends/roommates with cars, or the majority of places I needed to get to were within walking distance anyway.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 134: Huh?

Well, I "bought" my first car from my Dad once he upgraded his 05 xB for an 08, although it was used at that point. That car now has 125k on it, and I'm ready for something new.

I'm aware that VW has historically been unreliable, however I haven't read a whole lot that alarms me of that regarding the Tiguan. Still trying to dig deeper for more reviews that cover reliability, but it's just been a few isolated reviews so far, nothing that really screams out to me that it's a poorly made vehicle.

I think most people "bought" their first car from their family. At least in the midwest anyway. My first two cars were bought that way; paid just under Kelley Blue Book value, and made payments just like if I were to borrow money from a bank. RIP Deadmobile ('89 Corsica) and The Blue Torpedo ('90 Corsica).

yes, I could buy one tomorrow... I may even be able to get the one I want... i'm trying to thread a few things at once... I don't want to get a car until I can put a downpayment on a car and plausibly be able to go out and get a house/condo/townhome based on an FHA loan. Totally my choice.

I'm trying to be "smart" about things... but there's candy red Ford Fusion Hybrid that keeps calling out to me. I just don't want the guilt that I should be saving for something else though. I'm waiting for my promotion should I survive my project (see below)... after that we'll see.

If you can afford it, and could use it, and want it, then just do it. Not that difficult.

This. My mom is giving me 3k for my car to use it as a winter car/other car, so I'm using that as down money. I don't even officially start working until June 2nd, and won't get my first check until June 17th, but I'm going to be making a move on a car before then, because I want it. I'll be making more than enough to afford it, so that isn't an issue for me, especially since my expenses won't be very high at this point in my life (plus I'll be on a tugboat for roughly 20 days a month, and not spending much money on personal stuff during that time.)
