Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 118: BoredboredboredBORED

Bleah, no... last time I went to Ol' Mexico, I got food poisoning and barfed all over my bed. :o No thanks. I do like Monterrey though, in Lexington - very good (and fairly authentic) food, reasonable prices and lunch specials, and margaritas the size of my head. :D

Morning, Lodge. My tipping standards:
-very good: 20-25%
-good: 15-20%
-indifferent: low side of 15%
-very bad, if the waiter obviously doesn't care: a dollar (if the bill is $10 or over), pocket change (if less)
Oh, sure... now you tell me about this place.
Would have been useful information when I was working in Arden Hills. :p

There'd usually be a group of us that would go out to lunch every week or so. Ol' Mex was one of the favored haunts.

Of course, I wouldn't hesitate to meet my buddy out in Woodbury at Akita for sushi. 20/30 minutes one way. :)

IMHO, tipping, the way that it is done in the US, is a stupid practice. The servers should be paid an adequate wage which should be included in the price of the food.
But this would only mean slower and worse service. Without a tip on the line, where'e the waiter's incentive to come around to your table more than once every half hour?

Good and productive morning, Lodge!

Yes, I'm well aware that base pay for service employee's is roughly one quarter of the national minimum wage, but still, I've tipped for shi**y service with subway stamps and loose change before.

this makes you a d*k. You don't want to leave a tip, that's fine, but don't clean out the lint in your pockets and give it to the server. You send a better message by stiffing them altogether. You ever go in there again, your drinks will most likely have an additional ingredient in there you don't want.

In an odd coincidence, my nightmare last night was about the flight I was on getting re-routed.

you weren't on my Dallas to Denver flight, were you? :)

Serving, I tip 20% unless the service was absolutely exceptional. Then I'll go up from there. It can drop real quick though if the service is not good. I have stiffed before and made it quite clear why I stiffed them. It was at a Hooters, and the girl threatened to get her manager. I said please do.

Also, regarding tipping at a bar. If your get change, do not leave quarters on the bar as a tip. That will ensure your drink the next time is of ****ty quality. Leave a dollar per beer, dollar per mixed drink, and at least two-three bucks for a round of shots. Also, pre-tip your bartender at the beginning of the night and you will be taken care of.

If I had a waitress/waiter do that to me, someone better hit the lights, because the show is about to start. That manager would have been at my table, by my request. And then everyone within earshot would have heard the airing of my grievances. I'm just about the last person to complain, but dammit, don't push my buttons after you've given me horse**** service.

:D Monterrey is my go-to Mexican place, really. The strip mall is probably about as dumpy as the one Ol' Mexico is in, but I like Monterrey a lot regardless.

Maybe I'll try Ol' Mexico again - haven't been for probably fifteen years.

Speaking of places you like, my coworkers and I were discussing Fogo de Chao at work yesterday. I think that it will be a necessity to visit. :D

I usually tip $2 (or more depending on how complicated it is) for mixed drinks as they do require some effort and knowledge unlike pulling a pint or opening a bottle. Indeed on the pre-tipping policy.

Hadn't thought about pre-tipping, but I usually tip heavy after the first drink (assuming it's reasonably good) and they get the message. Otherwise, yours is a good policy.

speaking of, just found out we have a hookup at Eagle Street Grille. I know a bartender that is working there. I told her I'm bringing 20-25 of my closest friends come April 2011. She said drinks galore!

this makes you a d*k.

Meh, I've been called worse. :D

Regarding the mixed drinks, I'll usually tip well after the first one; never really thought that pre-tipping would be beneficial.

Torrential downpour out there, but that will not deter me from celebratory beer tonight. Celebrating the submission of applications to grad school and the end of BC summer class - and being 98% done with moving.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 118: BoredboredboredBORED

Did you get to the Dairy Queen?

yup... I am such a man of low ambition... the truth is that I don't want to expound the time or energy into figuring out the places to go in the city. To be honest, I just want to relax and not have so many thoughts in my head... usually no such luck though. I need a helper brain to get things done around here.

I almost didn't get going due to the other item i mentioned earlier in the day... spent an hour on Facebook and communicating with my mother.

I'm glad I didn't go to work in the sense that I wouldn't have been able to get much done the rest of the day.
