Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #111: Filling in for the night shift

I know how that goes... just realized it would be my great-grandma who passed away in January's 99th birthday.
Speaking of that, so my boss is mad at me because my class schedule changed (which he knew **** well about before I even was hired). He decided to schedule me to work immediately after my great-grandma's burial on Friday, and on Wednesday when I have lab for Bio.
Not really sure what to do about this, because there's nobody that I can change shifts with.
Do I just call the store manager tomorrow and ask her?

I'd call, for sure, but generally in this situation you are expected to find your own replacement. Still, it can't hurt to call and ask.

I'm just confused because I asked for it off ahead of time, in person and in writing, not to mention isn't there something called funeral leave?

It's called bereavement, and that policy differs by organization. Some allow grandparent while others only allow it for parents, siblings or children.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #111: Filling in for the night shift

Hi all, I think I did too much walking this weekend. My back is killing me.

I bought a cheap-o space heater today because I was tired of my apartment being cold while the weather outside figures out what its doing.

Downside to Apt living is they turn off the heat by Apr 1 (maybe earlier) regardless of the weather.
Don't they have heat shut off rules in MN? In Mass they have rules that landlords cannot shut the heat off until a certain date (like April 15th).

Today was a beautiful November day.

What JF said, and I think you're thinking of non-payment in cold months, they can't shut off your heat.

We apt people just are sad that when we get these unexpected cold spells in the warm months, that we basically hope that it doesn't get TOO cold.

Foxton2, you have to realize that you just started a job and that company is going to expect you to show up to work. Funeral or not, you still need to be reliable and asking for this time off is not going to look too good. I mean, if it's more important to you, go to the funeral. But I wouldn't expect your job to be there for you.

for the feds I don't think great-grandmother would apply but its counted against sick leave when you do take "bereavement leave".

I agree with Sloe... the last thing they really want to see from a kid is somebody who is flaky. I remember when my parents were shocked that I went to work every day of my first summer job. I don't think I missed a day of non-school work (work study, TA, whatever) until I got sick some time this past fall (don't throw me a celebration... I only worked 3 summers during 8 summers of schooling... save the two teaching assignments which I didn't miss either).

Remember that to them somebody who is flaky or asking extra demands gives them an additional headache. This is true no matter how up front or noble you are trying to be. You're only starting this and you've already thrown school and a funeral at them. Both can be reasonable... but both already sets a tone.

edit: I don't see how coming to work after the burial isn't unreasonable. I'd expect to have to do it in your shoes.

I don't think it should matter how long she's been working there, she should be able to go to a family member's funeral without hassle.

This question goes out to the home owners... at what stage do you start talking to professionals about things?

I have some ideas and I'll have enough money at the end of my lease (or nearer towards the end of the year) to cross over the FHA limbo line (plus extra). The question is "do I want to live off of the subway path"... still trying to figure out what I want to do but I want to snare a 2 bedroom something... probably a condo... rent out the room and then not have to worry about doing what I feel I need to do as a "young adult" pushing 30.

All that being said, when do I start to seek out the "professionals".

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #111: Filling in for the night shift

I didn't take sick leave for over a year when I took this job.

Don't start seriously looking into a home / talking to realtors until you have a downpayment ready (10%).

Know what your price range is, as well.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #111: Filling in for the night shift

I didn't miss a day for the first 2 years of my current job, either. Even now, the last couple times I missed work was only because of either doctor's orders, or they thought I was too sick to work and sent me home (yeah, that happened, and I was not pleased about it).

I'll be in my mid-30s until i save up 10% for this area... especially if I decide to start traveling or other things... under this idea I buy nothing major at all until after I get the property. I have a good idea on my price range because I've done more than a few calculator run downs.

Right now I don't like being locked into this idea that i have to save... if I'm going to save then I may as well get it done so I can move on to the other crap I need to do with my life.

dude, if you take a job then immediately say oh btw, I know you just hired me but I'm already going to be a major pain in your *s and duck out for a funeral, they aren't going to exactly look upon her with favor. Sucks, but that's the way the employment world is right now. There's tons of people that are lined up to take her place. Trust me.

Well, I wouldn't want to work for a company that is like that. I have never gotten that kind of impression from work.
