Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig
The end of the season was a three game disappointment for the Denver Pioneers. The team didn't play particularly well against North Dakota and the better team won the game.
Denver seemed disinterested from the opening faceoff against Wisconsin in the WCHA consolation game and the better team won the game.
Today against RIT, the Tigers took the lead early in the game, managed to hold off the Pioneers' best players for most of the game, got terrific goaltending, added a power play goal late in the game and then withstood a late charge by Denver. Congratulations to the Tigers.
It's farewell and Godspeed to seniors Rhett Rakhshani, Tyler Ruegsegger, Matt Glasser, Brian Gifford, Cody Brookwell and Brandon Vossberg. The first two names in this list deservedly earned many headlines with their scoring sorties and exploits. However, it's players such as Glasser, Gifford, Brookwell and Vossberg who play well enough so that the big-time scorers can flourish. My admiration for hard-working third and fourth line players on college hockey teams knows no bounds. I tip my hat to those young men, one and all.
I always have a soft spot in my heart for such players. [It looks like Chris Knowlton, who'll be a sophomore next year, may be such a player]. Six seniors have played their last game for Denver and there's well-founded speculation as to whether Joe Colborne [Boston Bruins] and/or Patrick Wiercioch [Ottawa Senators] may have played their final game today for the Pioneers. It's possible Marc Cheverie[currently Florida Panthers, but potentially a free agent because apparently he hasn't been offered a contract since being drafted three years ago] may decide to head for a professional career as well, even though he has a year of eligibility remaining.
Denver begins the 2010-2011 season by heading to Vermont after the Catamounts came to Magness Arena to begin this past season. That series starts on Friday October 8, 2010, and so, the 195 day off-season begins tomorrow for Denver.
Good luck to your team if it's still playing in the tournament. I'll be pulling for the WCHA teams remaining in the field.
