Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

Heck, my mom will let my sister and me know when she arrives to her destination and when she gets home.

If it's a longer trip, she usually already knows I'm going, so me dropping a quick text to let her know I made it isn't a big deal. Sometimes I don't remember until well after I've arrived. It's just for her peace of mind and not because she's particularly nosy.

Mornin' Lodge.
Quiet day around here.
Hopefully that keeps up. I've got other things I need to work on.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

I'm finding it odd that the first major discipline conference I'm attending isn't even in my own field. Granted, there's plenty of things going on that involve my discipline and the things we want to do... but still... odd.

edit: as soon as i regain my head I'm going to be fairly geeked up about this... it seems far more interesting than any regular statistics conference.

Bob: I know the Chicago Marathon individual entries are closed, but they're still accepting runners on behalf of Charity:

May be something to think about if you still want to run the Chicago Marathon.

...But, still, I'm a bit annoyed--phones work TWO ways. If you want to talk to me, you can call me, too. Don't just sulk because I haven't contacted you.
Yep. Les, and any Extras know about the issues I've dealt with regarding my mother. She has no problem driving five and a half hours to see her boyfriend's daughter, but the extra hour to see me isn't worth the time.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

'morning tLodge! Robbie is finally back in NC and he is making me breakfast! He's such a good husband!

OK, I have to pose a question to the Lodge, but especially to anyone here who has older, "grown" children:

Do you ask or expect them to "check in" after travelling?

I guess I can pose this to the Lodge as a whole--are you unmarried, young people of the Lodge expected to check in?

I only expect my daughter to check in when she get to and returns from longer trips, ie longer than a weekend. When she went to Ireland/UK she even sent me her entire itinerary so someone would know where she is. My son lives with his dad still, so I let him worry.

As far as my parents, when I fly or drive more than 8 hours somewhere I check in with her. I used to do it more, but now that I am married again, she figures there's someone else to worry. :)

Yup - Usually within a few hours of getting in, I'll give my parents a buzz and let them know that I'm safely at my destination. The only exception is tcbg's house (about 45mins - 1hour away by bus/train) since it's not always clear in advance whose place we'll be staying at for the weekend. My parents and I usually talk once or twice a week just to say hello and catch up. If more than a week goes by, one or other other of us gets worried.
You stay at tcbg's house? You sleep in separate rooms, right? ;) :p

Since we are posing scenarios- Found out about the 8th grade class trip at PTO tonight. They bus close to 400 kids to the local amusement park. They do not pre-pay. Basically they supply the bus that drops them off at the park, the kids are told to meet at the end of the day. They are responsible for paying to get in, eating etc, policing themselves. The chaperones just wander the park looking to see if anyone is doing anything wrong. (The chaperones are not familiar with the kids so I am not sure how they monitor anything.) The principal told us that some parents just don't understand that the rules are not the same on this trip as on other trips or during the school year. If a kid is smoking or swearing "what are we going to do? We aren't going to punish them this close to the end of school. What are we going to do? Tell them they can't participate in graduation?"

I was speechless. I can't imagine why something truly interesting hasn't happened so far on this trip. Or more likely it has but no one would ever admit it. I am not particularly worried that lil will do something stupid but I have significant doubts about a few of the kids that I know.
Is this to that fairly small park on the NH/Mass border? We did our 8th grade trip there back in the pre-historic era! And at first, I was going to disagree with you about the necessary supervision, but I thought more about it, given the way the world has changed, perhaps a more traditional grouping of kids and supervision would be a good idea. They should at least make sure the kids actually buy a ticket and enter the park.

On the good side, there is nothing else around the park for them to do if they did sneak out. The mall is too far away to walk to, and there's only houses in the immediate area of the park.

No joke. Or posters coming back out of the woodwork.

I want to rant again, about one of the "new" NMU guys. He's going to the Xcel this weekend as the director for the pep band. That wouldn't be so bad, except for this interesting tidbit: his wife (yes, I said wife... and he's still in a college pep band even though this is his EIGHTH year of undergrad) is 36 weeks pregnant, on bedrest, and they're watching her blood pressure because they're concerned she might have pre-eclampsia. And he's STILL going.

Am I out of line for thinking this is... well... not the most responsible choice?
If I were his wife, he wouldn't be going anywhere this weekend because he'd be in the hospital. (yeah, not sure how I'd manage that being on bed rest, but I'd find a way, maybe my cousin Vinnie could help!)

Good morning.
Fillet + Jameson = good time at Mancini's last night. Then the Wild had to go and ruin the evening. ;)

BTW, did you guys know Joe Thornton now plays for the Sharks. I was shocked when I saw him last night.

I was more freaked that she thinks that kids smoking and drinking should have no consequences. Heck, HS Srs have consequences for that and they are doing a real graduation. Bottom line is the lady is dumb as a rail* when it comes to keeping any semblance of discipline and this isn't the age to tell kids there are no consequences for their actions.

*Mr's line- dumb as a post you can stand on your own 2 feet. Rails can't even do that.

I think what's probably going on here is that they're worried about their own legal authority in the park. Now that everybody is lawsuit happy and such they'd rather let park security take the liability for them instead of a chaperone grabbing one of the kids by their arms and disciplining them themselves. Further, if the parents challenge the chaperones even if they are just being an eye-witness the students will probably get off because everybody expects a court-like burden of proof system. I mean, think about it, what happens if one kid starts assaulting another and a parent steps in... we know what should happen but we're relying on a set of "nobody harms anybody ever when they should know better"... adults by definition should know better so that puts the adult at fault whereas a child is assumed blameless because they aren't the magical age yet where adultness is transferred from the heavens.

So, yes, the woman is stupid... but I can guess where this stuff is coming from.

I work at a facility that is popular for field trips - luckily, it's more positively controlled by our staff than an amusement park. Usually when kids are misbehaving, it's because the teachers have checked out mentally, and the chaperones usually follow suit (especially if they aren't teachers themselves.) They're not necessarily thinking "liability", just, "Oh, good, some other schmuck gets to watch them now." Our site staffers are pretty good about bringing behavior problems to a teacher's attention, but at an amusement park it would be VERY easy for situations to get out of control. The staff there wouldn't give a crap, unless kids were climbing the roller coaster or something, so teachers would have to be extra-vigilant and watch problem kids.

When Mrs. g takes her 4th grade class on field trips she is usually nervous and stressed. She views these kids as one of her own and takes personal accountability to ensure that nothing bad happens. Granted she usually has a couple chaperones to assist but it is ultimately her responsibility for the students safety. She is always fearful of one of the kids wandering off or something worse. I fear for the kid that steps out of line. Mrs. g is tough as nails and doesn't take any crap. Believe me........I know. ;)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

I would say thanks to that if I were you:p

Oh I am thankful of that, :D I just hate getting questioned on when I'm going North to see her next, knowing full well that she was nearby.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

I'm kind of surprised with so many of the responses of people calling parents when they get home from a trip/travelling as adults. I guess I never even considered it, and I don't think my parents did either. If I called my dad to tell him that I made it home I would a response of "Yeah, so why are you calling me about it?", my mom would say something like "Um, ok, thanks for calling, I guess".

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 106: My Team I Do Deeply Dig

On the field trip, amusement park topic. When I was in school, probably around 8th grade, my school did the exact same thing. I don't remember there ever being any problems. I'm sure some kids must have gotten away some stuff, most likely smoking, but they're the same ones that would have been smoking in some alley after school anyway.

Answer in a baffled voice: Why would you ask me that? You could have seen me when you were down last time. I just figured you didn't need to see me that much.:D
