Religion: Communion Toast Crunch

The church where my mom was Head Deacon has a sign with a new message every week. This week it is: God is more than meets the eye.

That's particularly funny given that Xtian Aid Ministries is a front for Amish and Mennonite groups. None of them are ever going anywhere near Boston unless they happen to stumble there on Rumspringa, lmfao.

This seems like harsh language. My understanding of the Amish and Mennonite are they are 100% sincere and not malicious in any way. They come outta Pietism, which is Dutch for "you know what you did." They consecrate their lives to sincere belief and practice. They have many practices we violently disagree with -- they condition their children like B. F. Skinner and they view women as inherently inferior. But they are not hypocrites and I can't imagine them running a cash or recruitment scam.

There's just no room for bullshit in those faiths. AFAIK.

If they were trash too this old atheist would be disappointed and hurt. I'm rooting for them as an alternative to the last 500 years. It aint for me, but vive la difference.

You can be sincere and not malicious, and still have trash takes that hurt other humans. Insulating yourself in a closed religious and cultural society isn't an excuse. It's a choice and they all make it when they choose confirmation in that faith.

Oh so you mean it's a front in the sense that those groups are behind the anti-LGBTQ messaging?

I'll admit I am surprised. I thought the Amish and Mennonite kept to themselves and were perfectly happy to see us burn in hell without their intercession. I didn't think of them as in any way evangelical.

These seem to be militant orthodox offshoots: the Conservative Menonites and the Beachy Amish. They are schismatics over issues like revivalism and evangelism. So it tracks now.

Every faith has its cunts.

One of the reasons the Amish community in the NYS Finger Lakes area is growing is because of a large migration from Ohio. It was groups who disagreed with the Ohio groups, so they moved. I don't know the exact disagreements, and who is more conservative or not, but it was a schism in the original Ohio community which led to the growth of the NYS community. (Not to be confused with the Mennonites living up in the North Country. They've been there a long time, back to before I went to college up there.)

That is all very interesting.
 
I have PA and Ontario Mennonite ancestors starting about 5 generations back (fun fact - there's at least one first cousin marriage in that branch too). Someone in Lancaster County either left for another sect or (more likely) needed to find cheaper land to farm. I think it was a GGG grandmother who broke away and married a Canadian-German Catholic.
