A dying culture of Bible thumping, Easy Mac with boiled hot dogs, and underseasoned potato salad letting out its last primal, guttural scream. If we could just hang on another 10-20 years as they continue to drive away more and more youth with their reactionary bile, we'd be rid of them as a serious threat to America. Unfortunately, it's looking like a longshot.
 
Today in history, roughly 325 AD: the Nicene Creed was finalized.

Was later I learned the Council of Nicene had nothing to do with church and everything to do with politics.

Council of Nicaea. They essentially voted on the nature of god.

My breakfast group calls itself the Council of Nicetaseeya. We'd vote on the issue too, but none of us buys god.


To your point, though, MT, I'd say it had everything to do with church, because church is politics.

My friend Amber and I realized the same thing about our church:

Just another social club and if you don't have as much money as they do, they say you're welcome, but not really. After I quit drinking, most of them stopped talking to me.

I saw a sign outside a church near me last weekend: "All are welcome here. Really. (No, Really!)"

How sad is it that an organization who's motto is "love one another" would need such a sign?
 
TIL if self-identified ex-Catholics are considered a religious affiliation it is the third largest in the US (12%).

If you're poor, all the attention you get is a gigantic pity fuck.

Even though Grace Episcopal is LGBT affirming, after I got sober, Amber and two other families are the only ones still maintaining connection.

And growing every year. I know for a fact that there are also lots of CEO Catholics, who may as well identify as 'ex' if they only bother to show up and pop a cardboard cookie and a sip of cheap vino twice a year.

It's going to accelerate, as the proportion of black and brown Catholics is increasing and those guys are hardcore Back to the Past conservative. The combination of the Church's lurching right (driving away white progressives) and the church becoming non-white (driving away white conservatives) is going to hollow out American and European white Catholicism.

Move the Papal seat to Hippo Regius. It's quite beautiful.

I was a CAPE (Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Easter) Catholic for many years before I gave up even that remnant.

Better believe I'd still call myself a catholic if i ever had to run for office, though.
 
Atheist former Catholic here. Catholic school from K-8. Involved in high school youth group. Served on a diocesan youth council. Went atheist in college though honestly I was leaning that way in high school too. Mom, who was raised devout Catholic, did not take it well. But she has softened and become a progressive Catholic who hates trump and conservativism and leans pro-choice. Helps that she has a lesbian daughter and very liberal children and grandchildren.
