Regional Attendance

Re: Regional Attendance

Could campus sites be used as Regionals even if host school isn't in the tournament? And if they do make the tournament have the location still be viewed as neutral? Like - have Agganis be a Regional host. If BU makes the tourney, the get placed there but get no benefit (i.e. better locker room, etc.) Size-wise, it's great.

You may recall the 2015 Midwest Regional was at Compton Family Arena in South Bend.

they get the benefit of true home ice advantage, even if they are a 4 -seed

Michigan fans would know that from when they upset the higher seeded SCSU team in the first round back in 2001(?) when the game was hosted at Yost.

Re: Regional Attendance

Prior to 1992, the 1st 2 rounds (12 team tournament) or 1st round (8 team tournament) were held on campus sites. I thought it worked great.

Re: Regional Attendance

The NCAA really sucks the energy out of the regionals. I don't see why fan signs or noisemakers (cowbells) are not permitted. In the regional I attended in Worcester, the WiFi / mobile connectivity in the DCU was non-existent.

Ultimately, for the non-casual fans the combined cost of the ticket plus the lack of promotion is one reason why there aren't butts in the seats. I live outside of Worcester and there was very limited promotion of this event. The street light signs didn't go up until one-week before the tournament. Most area restaurants were not aware of this event.

The NCAA has a tremendous opportunity to introduce casual fans and kids to college hockey. It seems as though the NCAA puts all their promotional dollars into the "Frozen Four" - which actually has some fan events - and none into the Regionals. Not to mention - the TV exposure is virtually. ESPN is a horrible partner for college hockey. The NCAA would be better off to cut a contract with NBS Sportsnet. I think TSN had a better TV schedule for the Regionals than ESPN did.

Correct. However it's very difficult to see how that would be compatible with the coaches' vote last spring. (meaning a future Compton bid)

And while I don't recall the particulars, wasn't the selection of Compton something of a one time compromise? I believe the compromise was justified by arguments like "It's a neat new building that everyone will enjoy checking out;" "We don't have a satisfactory competing bid;" and so on. Maybe someone from ND recalls more of the details.

That was 2001 in Grand Rapids, #3 Michigan beat #2 seeded St. Cloud (only a mild upset) - and there were a LOT of Michigan State fans rooting for St. Cloud in that building that day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_NCAA_Division_I_Men's_Ice_Hockey_Tournament

beating St. Cloud in 2002 at Yost was #4 seed Michigan over #5 seed St. Cloud (not an upset)

always helps to have your facts straight

The loudest hockey game at The Ralph Engelstad Arena was not a game that UND played in.
It was the game with Sioux fans cheering for Holy Cross to beat Minnesota in the 2007 Regionals.
It was deafening!!!!
The atmosphere was incredible and worth 20 regional games where the arena is 1/10th full.
Have the top 4 seeds decide where they want the regionals to be, within limits of course.

That is a perfect example of the quirk that I see in that fanbase : Their hatred of Minnesota appears to exceed their love of their own team.

Re: Regional Attendance

because finding a hosting site can be done within 5 days?

Many but not all of these arenas are setting empty and an extra weekend full of hockey fans would be welcome, we have known for quite some time who the top 4-8 teams are it is not like the planning would start on selection Sunday.

Now please explain how you get this done, make sure arena dates are clear, get ESPN on board, advertise and promote and make all of the necessary arrangements in 2 days time.

you really don't understand how putting on an event that draws thousands of people works, do you?

It was the best game of the 3 games that weekend, went into overtime. What we were supposed to cheer for Minnesota with Gopher fans sitting right beside us??

Then the Sioux whupped up on Michigan I believe and then Holy Cross the next night.

Don't worry, it gets done magically because he really REALLY REALLY wants it to be done this way.
