Regional Attendance

Re: Regional Attendance

Could a 16 team tourney ever work where top 8 get a bye into super regionals. other 8 plays on campus whether that's one game or best of three. 4 winners advance and we place 6 teams in a east regional and 6 in a west regional at neutral locations.

I've always thought the answer is 2 regional sites. An east, and a west...
Friday
East 1
West 1
East 2
West 2

Saturday
East 3
West 3
East 4
West 4

Sunday
Winner of E1 vs Winner of E2
Winner of W1 vs Winner of W2
Winner of E3 vs Winner of E4
Winner of W3 vs Winner of W4

If 8 teams go to 2 places...you have a better chance of getting diehards fans to attend everything and play in the right size building, you're looking good.

Too many teams at 1 site, you run into issues with ice time for skate-arounds, locker rooms, and hotel rooms for that many teams

Re: Regional Attendance

With regards to building size and capacity, the Gophers would've been much better off bidding to have the games held in the Target Center rather than the Xcel Energy Center. Target Center isn't as nice, no, but it's a smaller venue and there are more options for fans to do things outside the game without having to travel far. As much as St. Paul puts out for college hockey fans, and all events at the X, really, the building is just too large, and, likely, much more expensive to rent.

The NCHC has had good events these past three years now at Target Center. There's no reason to not use it as a regionals site, too.

This is a good idea. Rotate between Providence, Manchester, and somewhere else in the east. Don't know the western sites well enough to know which would be best.

17,500 vs 17,954? Yeah, huge difference...

Re: Regional Attendance

You can charge 5 bucks at a local high school rink because the rink is gonna make there money and its not a big production. When you have what you had this weekend you have to pay concessions, espn, ticket people etc etc.

so we are paying get the honor of seeing a game in the xcel? and the mini donuts wasn't even open?!!!?! no thanks.

You could definitely do this in Fargo, St. Paul, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Cincinnati, Columbus...not sure how much better attendance would be but it could work.

Re: Regional Attendance

Best concession deal in Albany were the $8.50 loaded nachos with chili, jalapenos, sour cream, salsa, etc. Had 'em both days and wish they had a similar product at Lowell's Tsongas Center as you pretty much pay the same for a bag of chips and a container of cheese to dip them in there.

We had this at the Tsongas all year. You could even get pulled pork or chicken on the nachos. It was pretty prominent, but I guess if you sat over on the section 116-120 side and never ever walked to the other side of the arena you'd miss it.

people that claim to know say that crappy ice is all that you would get with 4 games over 3 days. mookie thought zamboni technology was a foregone conclusion, but he's been wrong before....

they ran out of chips during the 2nd period in the hea qf :(

therefore they could have had the best pulled pork in the world, but no way to get from plate to mouth

Now find locker space & trainers facilities and practice time for 8 teams at one venue.

Oh duh, I was thinking the crap they used to have. Totally forgot about the nacho bar, yes, a nice addition this year.

Re: Regional Attendance

We used to do East and West regionals, although there were only 6 and not 8 teams at each regional. Attendance at those regionals sucked too.

Ever since they went to regionals in about 1992, attendance has sucked, except for the occasional outliers like Fargo or Mariucci arena or a place like that with the "home" team participating. The problem with regionals, again, is the fact that fans of the team simply can't pre-plan to go there. As a consequence, you either need a home team or one extremely close, or you basically have to give away tickets so that locals with no rooting interest will come out for some extremely cheap, good entertainment.

I agree that would present an issue, but is there space and trainers facilities for four teams at Schneider or QU's arena? How about if someone like Harvard or Yale got a 1 seed? Heaven forbid hell froze over and Merrimack got a 1 seed. At least you could select the site in advance that had the ability to handle eight teams, or could delegate their facilities in a way to make it happen.

Re: Regional Attendance

I thought the X was closer to 20,000 and the TC closer to 15K.

Looking it up, and the X had 21,609 fans in the building for a hockey game. That 17,954 figure of stated capacity is a sandbagging figure. That place has had a number of games with over 19,000 in attendance.

no idea what ur alluding too

Only a fraction of the concession stands were open at the X last weekend, and the stands that were open didn't even offer all their normal options, not even thinking about alcohol for this. The mini-donuts were one of those things not available this weekend. Some Boston people were noticeably upset by this.
