Redemption....Ground Hog Day

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

Going forward, it is nice to wish that Klinger were here. But, hey, so long as we are beefing up the perception that we need help to match Testa & Company…let’s add some wishful additions to offense by tossing in Accoin andMcClean.

Nice thought but I do worry that some folks—including any player reading all fan these remarks—might get the impression that Cadets fans somehow think that our goalies (with a combined 23-3-1 record) are somehow not up to snuff to “beat those guys.”

As for Babson’s goalie Zeke Testa—we have all acknowledged that he has been great but how about just adding…”so far..so good”. He is not Darth Vader, the Joker or the Boogey Man and he can be beaten by…even by mere mortals. In fact, his life-time record at Babson is 26-29-10. (.477). Not much to write home about, eh? Me? I bet the percentages, career performance consistency and playoff experience.

Over the last three years that our current crop of goalies have been around--Czarnota’s record is 20-2-2 (.893), Marinsek’s record is 9-2-0 (.818) and Parker Carroll’s record is 32-3-3 (.882). They also have been to the NCAA dance three times. Meanwhile, over those same three years, Babson’s Zeke Testa record is 18-21-8. So far in NCAA play he is 1-0. Still not much to brag on but he is more consistent...so far. :o

Hey we know Babson has developed into a great club built around a core of five Seniors including Testa. And Zeke is very good, e.g. ”so far..so good.” But lets also stick with all the folks that brought us to this party. We can "beat those guys" with the team we have. It will be a great game! Roll on Cadets!

Just have to remember that 50+second spot on a Friday night where he let everything in, and build on that.

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

Absolutely. They will need to hustle and hopefully score early and often. It should be a great game and I am looking forward to it.

If the motivation of revenge for last week and the desire for the seniors to go out on top are not enough to beat Babson, I'll be very surprised.

Now to me the question of the week becomes, who does Norwich start in goal?

We have three great goal goaltenders. Parker is the only one that has shutout Babson this year. Maybe its time to let him out of the doghouse?

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

Redemption, or Bad News Bears? :D I love Groundhog Day, and wouldn't mind seeing it again on Saturday night. And if we're calling up ghosts of players past, I'll bring back PT's father Paul and Tommy Sasso, the only (?) player to win the college division Hobey Baker award twice. They would make Swiss cheese of whoever you put in goal. This is Norwich's NC game - I don't see anybody else beating them. Babson, on the other hand, I don't see beating anybody but Norwich. What a great game to be able to see. I am so jealous of all of you who are going.

Go Babo!

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

Come on Norm, Plattsburgh fans shouldn't be piling on hawk - that's our job.

Hawk is a blight to any sports fan, if you can make a realistic wager and can't honor it, you simply have no honor.

That's my guess, but I agree all three are very good. IMO Czarnota is a small step ahead of the other two most nights, but they are all top shelf. Having the three of them clawing for starts is a nice problem to have.

Now the defense just needs to do its normal solid job and the forwards just need to blast past the Babson defense put a few past Testa.

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

One of my best hockey memories ever was that final in Lake Placid in 2010. B. J. O' Brien and Klinger. Both goalies were just in the zone.

Second only to a gold medal game in the same building :D

Actually, the gold medal game (vs Finland) was somewhat anticlimactic in comparison to the semifinal (vs the USSR), which is probably the best game ever played in that arena.

I would put the Norwich/St. Norbert final ahead of the gold medal game.

Not me. The commies won that 2010 NC game.

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

While I don't want to get too far ahead ahead of ourselves, IF Norwich should prevail tonight and go to Lake Placid, is there any chance of sweet-talking WDEV into simulcasting their broadcast in the Herb Brooks Arena on 97.5 FM (or another available low power FM frequency) like they do at Kreitzberg? Now that would be nice!

I guess I was thinking they could just take the unit they use at Kreitzberg with them to Lake Placid.

I actually listened to them in Lake Placid on the web on my phone last year but I have since switched carriers and no longer have a dataplan.

Also, while I know the plan to hold the D1 and D3 Frozen Four the same weekend fell through - how about having one site host the D3 men and women's Frozen Four in 2014? It is many of the same teams anyway. I remember in 2010 when Norwich won and the women were playing in the NC game the next day that I considered traveling to wherever they were but it was going to be a long haul. At least this year they have them scheduled for different weekends.

The problem with the NCAA the hosting the DIII Men & Women's "Frozen Four" at a single site is it makes too much sense!!!

That is something that we (the fans) have talked about on this site and the other for a while - it is popular with us, but reportedly some women's coaches are afraid that they would be second class citizens in such an arrangement. Actually, their fears aren't as unreasonable as I thought at first blush - think about what we thought about the treatment the D3 final would get if the combined plan with DI had gone through.

However, I still like the idea.

Like they aren't already? In my field, anything that creates positive exposure is a good thing, I had a time getting used to the no-checking, but I find the women's game getting better all the time, IMO merging the championships would be among the fastest steps they could hope for at gaining fans and recognition.

There are plenty of outlet malls in Maine - I think the women already know how to get there...:D (no, wife does not read USCHO - its all good)

+1 They currently are second class citizens and probably always will be (just like D3 will always be D1's younger brother - though I much prefer D3 hockey to D1 hockey and D1 hockey to the goons of the NHL). But I think a combined Frozen Four would get them closer to parity than continuing to have a separate Frozen Four. I envision the men's semis would be Friday afternoon/evening, the women's semis Saturday afternoon, the men's final Saturday night and the women's final on Sunday afternoon. That is what Norwich did last weekend hosting the men and women ECAC-E championships and it seemed to work quite well.

Re: Redemption....Ground Hog Day

The only final four I have been to was three years ago in Lake Placid which was capped by that superb NU/SNC game. Great venue and the crowds were great. What a great memory.

I also watched the games last weekend from Northfield noting that while there was a strong crowd for the men’s game there seemed to be very weak support even for the NU women…(1.) playing at home (2.) in an ECAC-E Championship game.

I saw all the games at Lake Placid including those that NU was not playing in—always with strong fan support. I just wonder if doubling the number of games at a frozen four at DIII level would actually show case women’s DIII hockey more or maybe hurt it.

I do enjoy watching the women’s games and while the strength and skills may not compare to a men’s game—their teamwork, passing and playmaking at least from the NU women squad is superb--revealing a very well coached team. They are fun to watch.
