Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

OT, what is up with Alberts dumping your football program? I know you guys are jumping up to D1. Why couldn't you just jump up to D1AA in football? It was a surprise decision.
The school in Lincoln was worried that UNO would be swiping kids that would normally walk onto the team. At D2, UNO had 36 scholarships to use to bring in kids to play, most of them only getting a quarter scholarship. At D1-AA, UNO would have had 63 scholarships to split among the team. Even in Husker rabid Nebraska, there's a lot of kids who would love to play for the Huskers, but the whole financals of trying to earn a scholarship at lincoln while paying their way for 3 years. Throw in a half scholarship at a school that has tuition that's cheaper than what it is in Lincoln, and you would have a lot of kids in a small state that would be sorely tempted to give up the dream of playing for the Cornhuskers and get a good quality education at another school.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

At least you admit it was questionable, took 10 years to get that admission:D
Come on, it's not like I've been talking about it / thinking about it at any point since the year it happened... unlike some people who apparently have PTSD nightmares because of it and cannot move on. :p

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

I don't think Red said anything that Jeff Jackson didn't say about the officiating in ND's semi final game. Neither said the officiating was unfair or even biased. Jackson called it "different". I felt Michigan was in trouble when they disallowed the goal. PA at the arena said there was "incontrovertible evidence of a no goal". Oh, the ref made the save, not the goalie. I knew MIchigan wasn't going to win in the third when it took a committee to call a penalty on UMD. In the first period, Clare was called for a hitting after the whistle. The whistle blew, and the UMD player skated right at Clare and he shoved him. He went down like a ton of bricks. Ok, the rule book says you can't do that. Normally (this was my 8th FF) the refs in the NC game warn the players and let it go. Then in the third period , Hagelin and a UMD player were racing after a Michigan icing. (I hate the delayed icing call, but that's another thread) The Duluth player reached the faceoff dot first and the ref blew the whistle. Then he hit Hagelin into the boards behind the goal line. Considering that they knew the rule from the earlier call I couldn't figure out why it took all four to call the penalty, hitting after the whistle. They reviewed that call longer than they reviewed the no goal.

Of course the crowd booed. I lost a lot of respect for Minnesota hockey fans last weekend. I always thought that being from the State of Hockey they would be the most knowledgable fans around. On one of the rare UMD penalties, UM was still in control of the puck and the refs still hadn't blown the whistle. The guy in front of me shouted, "He touched the puck!!!" Pretty soon, everyone around us was yelling that. Eventually UMD gained control and the ref blew the whistle.

That being said, UMD was the better team. THey were faster, played better D, better goaltending, and even better Coaching. Knowing what Jackson said the game before about the officiating, Red should have had the team better prepared to play pansy a55ed eastern hockey. Sandelin certainly had his team ready to play pansy a55ed eastern hockey. Look at some of the photos M Wade took. Half of them are of Duluth players laying on the ice. By the middle of the game UM was afraid to touch anybody for fear of geting a penalty. It turned into a synchronized skating contest. There was more hitting and less falling on the ice in the Posters Game. There has been a lot of debate lately about the B1G hockey. We should be more concerned about pansy a55ed eastern hockey. That's the real threat to college hockey.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

As it happens I was in NYC at Madison Sq Garden last week and I asked this question.
Was it named because this was Madison Square? The answer is it used to be at Madison Square but it's not now.I don't think there even is a Madison Square any longer.

There still is a Madison Square where Broadway intersects 5th Avenue at 23rd Street. As you said, once upon a time MSG was there.

Bitter, party of one. Bitter, party of one.

To the original point of the thread...nice selective reading by the author. No way those comments come off as being a sore loser.

Can we change the name of this post to Wol4ine: America's Sorest Loser?

Solid gold! Just when I thought the joy of winning had subsided a millimeter, this sad little clown shows up and cries about tUMD's superior skill, superior players, superior game plan, superior physicality, superior special teams, superior conditioning and superior fans. Oh, and we also have Lake Superior. Woot!

This is great, UMD pawned Michigan and here you are making excuses for Michigan. I'll bet Red would like that, some ****** on a message board making excuses for his team that simply wasn't as good as UMD.

You're just a hater. :p

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

I don't agree with wol4ine but I don't completely disagree either. There is definitely pansy a55 hockey played in the east. The refs did officiate as if it was a typical eastern game. But the whole game has changed toward this style of hockey more and more each year.
sure UMD dived on more than one occasion but so what, michigan could have done it and gotten a few calls as well. Plus the ice is generally tilted toward them game to game so no one is particularly sympathetic. I would love it if the officiating would be more even from league to league, but it isn't.

Did you even read my post? or did you just assume that any UM poster must be a cry baby? I wasn't 'crying' about UMD being superior to UM saturday. I thought I was being congratulatory. How could I have made it any clearer;
That being said, UMD was the better team. THey were faster, played better D, better goaltending, and even better Coaching.
MIchigan had three walk-ons playing in that game. They didn't belong on the ice with UMD. I thought after paying hundreds of dollars I would see a good game, like the previous 7 frozen fours I've been to. My 'whinning' is aimmed more at the officiating. Not that it was biased or unfair, but overzealous. Why don't you tell me what it was about that game that you liked? Because I didn't see it. 13 penalties, an entire period+ on the power play. Let's just stamp a stop sign on thier backs and start & finish the game with shootouts.

Sorry, I didn't know "pansy *****ed" was a compliment. Are you implying they have floral-scented farts or something?

tUMD's captain was a walk-on forward from the NAHL. So was our goalie. And the guy who scored the GWG was also from the NAHL. Our coach just, you know, develops his walk-ons.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Most coaches around the country would kill to have that record. Just saying. Most would kill to have a 0-1 record in the frozen four.

Oh I would totally agree, Red is hands down one of the best college hockey coaches of all time, I don't think there is any doubt about that, and I'd say he is the best in the country at getting his team to the NCAAs, and even the Frozen Four but I just think that if you showed sports fans (who were devoid of college hockey knowledge) Red's NCAA resume, 21 straight appearances, 11 Frozen Fours, that most would guess that Red would have 4 or 5 rings instead of just 2, which isn't necessarily an unfair guess/expectation, this being my point....for someone who makes it that high up the championship mountain year in, year out, you would think he'd be able to make it to the top more than he has.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Red Berenson is a great coach and the length of his employment is a great example of how much he is revered by one of the greatest Universities in the nation both academically and athletically. If Red was asked "did the officiating cost you the game?" I would bet my chew spit covered pick'em-up truck he would say "No" but you can tell he was a little upset with some calls just like Keith Allain was and for good reason, but that's the human element of the game which makes hockey so amazing.

Congrats to UMD on a great season and a new banner to hang in your beautiful new arena.

Michigan you ruined a story book season for us, beat a juggernaut team, and made it to the NC game. Only a great program could have accomplished that feat.
