Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

wolverine - we could have 10 pages of stuff on that decision. It was surprise all around...shocking. But in the end, I think it actually will be regarded as a wise move....

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

So, basically, Red said nothing of what the original poster claimed.

Shut it down.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

I'm surprised "intent to blow the whistle" wasn't brought up; the one from the first period that ESPN couldn't shut up about.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

is "intent" a nhl thing and not an ncaa thing?

Whatever the case, it's gotta be one of the silliest rules in any book. Either the whistle is blown or it isn't. It should be black and white. Imagine trying to watch a replay on a disputed goal and trying to measure "intent."

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

It wasn't a shot. He like tapped the puck. It went two feet. JT Brown is awesome. Story over.

It went in the net, wouldn't that goal be considered a shot on goal if the game was not stopped by a whistle? It was an attempt to get under Michigan's skin, and it worked, many times throughout the night by UMD's first line.

Chris at WCH even weighed in....
"-Mike Connolly and JT Brown were dominant in this game. I think the only thing that kept them off from potting a goal was some kind of cosmic justice for the absolutely pathetic and embarrassing display of diving throughout the game. I've often marveled at Duluth's training staff whosomehow always seem to find a way to get seriously injured players back out onto the ice for the ensuing power play. A whistle-happy Hockey East crew maybe wasn't the best choice for this game."

Oh, Chris Dilks? You mean, Maize? The Michigan fan? Sorry, I don't read his blog anymore. And I see why. Oh how sad and bitter he is! It makes this sweeter!!!

It was nice of your band to play Hail to the Victors to honor our team so many times, too!

I've always marveled at the healing power of a penalty call, especially a 5 minute major. One moment the player is near motionless on the ice, barely twitching. The major gets called, he slowly gets up, gets to the bench, then he scores on the ensuing power play.

I've also been one who has never believed that power play chances should nearly always be even or within one or two of each other. But even with my "anti-Michigan" bias, I do think the PP chances in the final should have been a bit closer, more like 7-4 or 8-5.

Got proof because I know you don't. I was at that in game in section 17. The only sparty that was even close to being assaulted was Tropp after Kampfer's dad attempted to get into MSU's locker room. No sparty fans were assaulted or spit on. Thanks for lying. The only classless thing that happened from Michigan fans was the FU state chant.

liar

Last time I was at Munn, I had a drunk MSU fan get into my wife's face after sparty won in OT. All we were doing was walking out of the arena as quickly as we could because I know the reputation of drunk sparties. Do I really have to bring up cedar fest?

Do I need to get the jacket from the fans who were spit upon for DNA evidence? I will. Or the older gentleman who had a young fan in his face all the way down the steps threatening to kick his *** down them until a few younger folks got in the way. This wasn't at "the game" with Kampfer, but a later one. There are fans who are afraid to attend a game at Yost as they have been threatened with bodily injury and a few have experienced the actual insult of injury. I even had a couple of guys promise to kick my butt until I offered to oblige them. I have been to almost every rink west of Miami, and I will tell you that nobody fears attending a game anywhere but at Yost. It's a shame that anyone has to fear attending a hockey game, I don't care where it is. You had a bad experience at Munn, and if I had seen it happen I would have kicked somebody's *** for you. It's not right, but the fans at Yost seem to thrive on the fear. MHO of course.

Do they know how to play anything else? Aside from Band Room Riff?

I believe they played four songs!!! Plus everyone started yelling "Let's Go Dogs!" and drowned out the "Blue."

I love tUMD's fight song and I am glad they don't play it 600 times. It dilutes its meaning through overplaying. Of course, if we score a lot of goals then that's not dilution.

This thread is so funny.

You are so full of it is not even funny. I have season tickets and I am a member of the Dekers. I am sorry but the worst thing that happens at Yost is a few obscene chants. Perhaps there was a drunk student. Lets use a generalization fallacy to describe all fans. You know how I know you are full of it, there would be a police report. Guess what, the only events that show up on the police report for Michigan sports are minor in possessions and counterfeit tickets. The police blog is published by AnnArbor.com

I have never heard of a fan being afraid of going to Yost and I have been around too, probably just as much you. I have heard of fans being afraid to go to both Value City and Munn.

Michigan fans are perhaps the most pleasant (outside of obscene chants in the student section), in my experiences. At the other end of the spectrum you have NoDak, sparty, Miami, and Wisconsin fans. I went to the Culver classic and the what the wisconsin fans were chanting was 1000x worst than anything you will ever hear at Yost.

It would be different if you could demonstrably see that the goalie didn't have the puck covered, but there wasn't a good enough camera angle. He was off-balance and falling backwards after the original shot, so even if he initially had it covered, it may have came loose even before the ref intended to blow the whistle. If he kept it covered and Michigan had to hack it out, that's exactly why the rule is there. But if the puck was free and the refs waved off a good goal, that's why many feel the rule needs modification. Personally, I think the 'intent to blow the whistle' clause should be superseded if a team scores in that situation, and another ref/video review determines that the puck was free, showing the original ref's intent to blow the whistle for losing sight was inaccurate. Not that I necessarily think that rule would have changed the call in this case, but it would be nice to know there's at least a chance of the correct call being made when the 'intent' rule is misapplied.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

In all honesty, I LOVE going to Yost. It's loud. It's rowdy. It's alive. Would it be better if there were a bit more courtesy and a bit less obscenity (so at least the athletic department doesn't have to paper the house with "be nice" flyers), sure. But it is a great atmosphere. I'd rather go to a place where 7,942 people hate my team and let their feelings be know, than to one where 2,027 are barely breathing.

You realize that this is a hockey game, not a band competition, right? If your team is playing for a national title, would you rather the pep band play something that gets your fans on their feet and cheering, or would you rather have them play a crappy rendition of some pop song while your fans sit in silence?

I'd rather just let the organist play "Lady of Spain."

Next time, you should really stay for the ritual sacrifice of an adorable kitten at center ice after the announcement of the three stars of the game. It just brings the whole fear-sustained bloodfeast aspect of our beloved barn full circle.
