Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Why do packages of hot dogs come with ten while the buns only come with eight?

I don't know what you're talking about; the last time I saw a package of hot dogs it only had 8 in it. Granted those are the name brand ones, while the store brand still has 10.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

I will never forget seeing a young father leading his young son & daughter out of Yost after the student section sang/chanted
obscene verses. The little girl was in tears. The officials at Yost seem to think that this type of behavior is "cute". Yost is far from "fan friendly", but other schools (Cornell comes to mind) are quite similar. I remember several years ago an assistant coach
for an East coast D1 telling me that he cold hear the obscenities loud and clear over the radio as he traveled towards Detroit on
the 401.

What's "obscene?" How do you know that's why the girl was crying? Why have all of us who actually go to Yost on a regular basis have absolutely no clue what you people are talking about?

Cornell has since "cleaned up" their chants and actively demote (or whatever the proper antonym of promote is) any cussing, but the "fan experience" is still the same.

Just the fact that Michigan got 9 penalties and UMD only 4 tells me nothing about the officiating. Could it be that Michigan actually committed 9 infractions?

I think it's fairly likely that the disparity in the number of penalties called reflects the disparity in the number of penalties committed, given the shot totals and the eyeball test as to who carried the majority of the play in the game.

wolverine - the CCHA hated us (U!N!O!)? Really? When we played at the Civic (which was most of our time in the CCHA) we sold out every game. I have no idea how the money breaks down during playoffs, but if the CCHA gets any money from playoff gates (something tells me they do), they made a killing when (insert joke here about "when") we made the playoffs. Now, did that translate when (insert same joke) we went to the Joe? Not so much because fans tended not to travel to the Joe.

It's news to me that the CCHA "hated" UNO. Not sure where you were going with that. UNO happened to get hosed when they entered the league in a few ways - one of them being the annual trip to Alaska that we got no deals on like other CCHA teams did. But that's the price you pay as a newbie entering a new conference. I enjoyed our time in the CCHA (fun playing teams like Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State - even when we got beat), but the WCHA has closer teams and fits better.

I wouldn't think so. I would think that the name is because the Garden is located at Madison Square, not because the "Square Garden" is located in or at Madison.

Exactly, just like the Times Square Celebration is not a celebration of squares, but rather a celebration at Times Square.

Yeah, he's wrong on that one for sure.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

uno may have reported sellouts , but fans in the seats were a different matter. many threads on mavpuck on that topic from a few years ago.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

so was madison square were the "original" garden was, or down where it currently resides??... so many permutations to ponder...

considereing how many mavs fans SAID that they felt like the ccha hated u.n.o., it must be a true statement

By the CCHA, I mean the fans tended to dislike UNO fans. There was a cultural divide. I know a few sparties, domers, and buckeyes and we were all tired of certain members of the UNO fanbase. UNO makes much more sense to the WCHA financially and culturally.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

billmich - agreed...I went to all the games at the Civic and not all were true sellouts. But there were many bodies there - I believe in the top five for attendance at the time in the NCAA. And I do agree there was a lot of griping from the U!N!O! side about perceived biases against U!N!O! I tended to disagree with most fans on that.
wolverine - I see where you were going with that. And there are members of the fan base that can be quite tiresome (as I suppose there are in many other parts of the country). I do agree that the WCHA is a better fit...I still miss playing some of those Big XII schools though. For a division II (now division I, weird saying that) school, it was always fun to go up against powerhouses like Michigan and Michigan State.

OT, what is up with Alberts dumping your football program? I know you guys are jumping up to D1. Why couldn't you just jump up to D1AA in football? It was a surprise decision.

U-M hockey coach Red Berenson laments team's poor fortune

St. Paul, Minn.— Head coach Red Berenson walked into the Wolverines locker room about 45 minutes after Michigan lost to Minnesota Duluth, 3-2 in overtime, in the championship game of the Frozen Four.

He grabbed a slice of pizza, took one bite and threw it in the garbage, as if disgusted by something more than the preceding game.

Shortly after, he dismissed the choked-up Wolverines and tried to describe the emotions of a team so close to glory.

"I think right now it's pretty tough to reflect on the season when you just lost a national championship game in overtime. If you're a competitor, you're going to be devastated," he said.

"You know the seniors aren't going to get another chance, and they've been the nuts and bolts of this team. Our young guys, they might think they'll get the chance every year, but it doesn't work that way."

Berenson returned to the title game for the third time in his 27-year career at Michigan. The first two times the Wolverines left as 3-2 overtime winners, a complete opposite feeling from Saturday.

"I was more excited about winning a national championship than I was a Stanley Cup," he said. "There was no comparison. The investment you put into your team and the program years and years of trying to get there — and then to win one was unbelievable."

The 2010-11 Wolverines have some commonalities with Berenson's two champions, he said. The 1996 and 1998 champs relied on goalie Marty Turco, who Berenson said wasn't any better than Shawn Hunwick was in this year's Frozen Four. The first title-bearing team had more firepower, and the second relied on four senior leaders to help overcome 11 inexperienced freshmen in beating a better Boston College team.

"This team was a little bit in between," Berenson said. "We weren't as prolific offensively. We were better defensively. We had a goalie that could make a difference, and we have great seniors that were leading the way."

The Wolverines were just 2-2-4 in overtime games entering the title game while the Bulldogs went 6-2-4. And even though Michigan had a chance to recover during the intermission, having to kill off nine power plays left the Wolverines with less energy than the Bulldogs in the extra period.

"You'd like to have some power plays, too," Berenson said. The Wolverines were 0 for 4 on the power play compared to the Bulldogs' 1 for 9. "The game can't be that one-sided physically."

Berenson said he was happy for Minnesota-Duluth that it won its first title and admitted the Bulldogs were better than he thought throughout the season. Still, taking one bite of pizza in the losing locker room wasn't where he wanted to be.

"We could be national champions just as easy as not. The best team doesn't always win," he said. "We get an ugly goal, the game's over and we're happy. … We're used to playing in big games and in big rinks, but I can't tell you this was a real good game for us."

True. A shot is a shot. I mean, when I played boot hockey and wasn't playing goalie, my wrist shot was a more dangerous shot than my attempt at a slap shot (which was beyond pathetic). It's not like the rule says that if the puck is raised, or if the stick is raised above the waist on a shot that the rules are different.

It wasn't a shot. He like tapped the puck. It went two feet. JT Brown is awesome. Story over.

Also, isn't the sorest loser ever Keith Allain? I mean, Red is wrong about the officiating, Michigan committed more penalties than tUMD (most of them trying to catch JT), but he also didn't give up halfway through the game and then whine like a baby in the presser about how the refs ruined the game.
