Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

It's a bit different in a tournament situation, where there's some hack in the arena's front office dictating to the bands (via headset) when they can or can't play, and when you get about 15 seconds every two or three stoppages (which seemed to be the optimistic scenario at all four NCAA Tournament weekends I played at with the MHB), and your team may not be playing particularly well, you go with the short and sweet: The Victors, and Let's Go Blue. If you go to Yost, it's quite a bit different.
Not to be argumentative here, but don't all bands play under the same circumstances?

And yet, Michigan is the only school you hear this complaint about, or at least you hear it more about Michigan. I'm used to a band playing a fight song (a) when the team comes on the ice for warmups and at the beginning of periods, and (b) when the team scores a goal. That would be 13 times for Michigan, and yet by one count, it was more than three times that number this weekend.

Once again not trying to argue, and I thank you for giving us an insiders view, but please understand that it is annoying to neutral fans.

re: kjaskolski

Thanks for posting the whole interview. After reading it, I believe that the writer was either trying to make Berenson look bad, or was trying to quote Berenson to make his own (the writer's) point. In either case, bad writing.

My opinion after the semifinals was that about the only thing that Michigan did wrong on Thursday (that was as close to perfect a game plan and execution of a game plan as I've ever seen) was to take some stupid penalties, and I thought that might hurt them on Saturday, especially in light of UMD's outstanding power play. Turns out that it did hurt them, not because of giving up goals, but because they used up a lot of energy on the PK. On the shift they gave up the winning goal, they looked gassed.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

Wrong.

Minnesota's band plays a lot more songs than just the Rouser and whatever it is that would constitute their answer to "Go Blue".

For regular home games, Minnesota's band plays far fewer different songs than Michigan's band.

Because pep bands fly across the country to play to the taste of neutral/opposing fans?

They were gassed on that shift because they had just iced the puck I think twice and could not get a full change.

And I have never, ever in my life heard a band play the same two songs so many times. tUMD's band played under the same circumstances and played a variety of different tunes. Oh well. I've also never sang c**ksuckers so many times in my life, too.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

I only questioned two penalties. The 2nd (?) one of the game on Michigan after they missed an obvious UND elbow to knock the MI player over the boards (then calling a penalty on MI, I believe it was Scooter), and the evening up the penalties when Hunyuk (yes, intentional) punched the tUMD guy.

Red is five feet in the grave, but I haven't known him to be a "sore loser." Disappointed, sad, frustrated? Sure. Sore? No.

For the second one, the UMD player shot the puck into the net right by Hunwick well after the whistle was blown. That's why Hunwick was ****ed off, and it should have been an automatic penalty on UMD.

Some of us were thinking the tUMD player said something wayyyyyy over the line, as the ref didn't assess the tUMD penalty until after Hunyuk punched him, and the refs used the "make everyone 'happy' and even it out" rule.

Edit: we were 6 rows from the ice on that end, hence our observation.

I think it was more that the refs missed/decided not to call the original "shooting the puck after the whistle" unsportsmanlike, and then they just took both players for scrapping after the whistle. Usually I'd say that it's crap when they take both for roughing despite one clearly being the aggressor, but I think it balanced out in this case since they didn't call the original penalty.

He didn't "shoot" after the whistle. It's not like he wound up and took a slap shot, which is the point of the penalty, not to protect hurt feelings.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

What got me was the obviousness of the punch. It wasn't a face wash in the crease, it wasn't a pileup immediately after the whistle, where we all say, "eh, that's hockey." This was well after people were separated, and Hunyuk threw a deliberate punch into the chest of the tUMD player. THAT'S where we were puzzled.

I really had no opinion on this guy until then. And for the record, I still don't know if he just lost it in the heat of the moment, or if he's Ron Hextall-like. But that moment, he really p*ed me off. It was bad.

Obsene, profane, threatening or abusive language or gestures aren't an intent to phyiscally injure, so they're not unsportsmanlike then?

True. A shot is a shot. I mean, when I played boot hockey and wasn't playing goalie, my wrist shot was a more dangerous shot than my attempt at a slap shot (which was beyond pathetic). It's not like the rule says that if the puck is raised, or if the stick is raised above the waist on a shot that the rules are different.

Right. Doesn't matter the type of shot. It's considered taunting, which is unsportsmanlike conduct.

You seem to be thinking of "intent to injure", which is a much different situation.

EDIT: FWIW,

Shooting Puck After the Whistle
SECTION 46. a. A player shall not shoot the puck away from an official
after the whistle has blown.
PENALTY—Misconduct.
b. A player shall not shoot the puck at the goalkeeper or bench after the
whistle.
PENALTY—Minor and misconduct, game misconduct or disqualification
at the discretion of the referee.

Re: Red Berenson: America's Sorest Loser

It unfortunate when the media lifts a quote from a lengthly interview, wraps a feature story around it and in this case creates a very biased impression of Red's overall post game reaction. The entire interview presents a much more conventional, eulogistic and respectful Red Berenson.

NCAA coaches function under an NCAA code of ethics that prevents them from denigrating referees or openly refuting penalty calls to the media. Red rightly positioned his comments to generally indicate there were some questionable calls against Michigan, nothing more, nothing less. Regarding the caustic and inappropriate accusations leveled against Red by a snarly CCHA fan on this useless thread...get a life son. You're the sore loser.

Into the chest? Gosh Brent how terrible.:D That's hockey.

I know. They could get some pointers from Ogie Ogelthorpe or Bob Probert, right? :D

Yeah, I'm expecting billmich and Michfan or all those other guys who claim "envy because you [allegedly] hate us" to apologize, since I apparently am so jealous of MI I hate them. ;)

Great game, whole crowd was on edge. If there is any hope at all for this sport to grow on tv, this game helped it. Big crowd, big (cough cough) ratings I hope, huge in-person turnout.
