There are ways around it...

Best part about all this is that I've learned (supposed) Syrians use leetspeak. And have awesome photoshop skills.

probably some Syrian in the states who still has a cousin over there. That or somebody else was really looking for some lutz tonight.

Syria decided that the best way to get back at us was to boost our productivity by shutting down USCHO. I fully expect to see this bump reflected in next month's GAO figures.

If they think they'll get me on board by hacking a hockey site, they're horribly wrong. Also, of all sites, why this one? And only the fan forum? It's oddly specific. Also, they use hotmail and write in 1337 - how they managed to hack into anything is a mystery.

That was definitely the stupidest thing I saw yesterday.

They probably created code to modify vBulletin software. That won't work on the main site.

Forum software is something that is installed on a large number of web servers. If you can find an exploit, or there is a common misconfiguration that you can exploit, then that is an easy way to target thousands of websites with minimal effort. Its possible they just search for websites containing versions of bulletin board software with known exploits.

Supposedly the Syrian hackers are state-sponsored and may be getting assistance from Iran (not necessarily the ones that targeted USCHO -- they could be script kiddies) and in the event of an attack by the US they are threatening to target US companies (potentially causing limited economic harm -- even a basic denial of service attack can cost a lot in lost business opportunity) and I'm sure they would try to target US utilities and government systems as well
