Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

I don't see it as an upgrade, maybe a lateral move at best. It seems that Rand can pretty much write his own ticket at QU. UMass has to have a few more obstacles being a state school. Of course, HE/Providence lured Lehman away from Union so anything's possible. I just don't see Rand leaving QU for a mid-pack HE team... at least not now.

They're a mid-pack HE team until they get themselves turned around. Rand gets to build a program that's middling into a possible title contender. That's the charm of going to a place like that, should he want it.

True but... why did Cahoon leave? Supposedly no support and/or a lack of committment to the program. Compare that to what Rand has at QU. Lahey and McDonald adore Rand and the program. I would think that has to be a tough thing to leave behind unless you're talking about a top-10 program. Like I said, I just don't see him leaving for UMass.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Good for Wonger. He came on real hard towards the mid to end of last year. If he plays that way for the start of the season you'd have to think he'd get a shot in the 'A'

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Well, let the speculation on the new coach begin.

First of all, congrats to Rand. This is a great move for him that lines him up for one of the major jobs in the industry down the road.

Obviously, I'm a fan of Rand's on a personal level. He ran the Quinnipiac program with a lot of class while I was there. Through our interviews, Rand taught me a lot about the game of hockey, for which I'm grateful.

My short list has to include Ben Syer and Reid Cashman. Reid appeared to be coach-in-training, but he only had one year behind the bench. I don't think anyone expected Rand to leave, and I wonder if Reid would be ready. Personally, I still think he should be their first choice, especially due to PR reasons. I think Reid would really give the program a jolt that Ben Syer might not offer. I think a Reid hiring would energize the fanbase, alums of the program, and maybe even recruits.

Even though he's inexperienced, he's been in organized hockey his entire life. He'd need to make sure he knows recruiting rules, and might need more in-game game management training, but he's a born-leader. When Reid was the captain, his leadership qualities bubbled over. So, for those reasons, I like Reid as coach.

If Reid does get offered the job, they'll need to surround him with experienced coaches. Maybe former head coaches that were fired from their jobs in the past? Riga's a good start, he's already an assistant at QU. Would Syer come back, even if it's only as assistant?

There are definitely a few ways this can go for Quinnipiac. But, I'd be in favor of a Reid Cashman hiring, despite his inexperience behind the bench.

Not so fast yet Qpac fans. QU counter offered according to USCHO's Nate Owen and Rand is staying put for right now.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Wow. I'll be honest, I wonder what this does to Rand in the future, if that report is true. I almost hope that report isn't true. Otherwise, he may have strung UMass along, and you wonder if that gives other schools pause in going after him in the future. If those schools would be worried that he will leave them at the altar. I mean, he interviewed, was offered a contract, and appeared to be ready to accept it. At that point, obviously Quinnipiac was going to counter, but you've gotten so far, you almost have to go on principle, no?

It does show how loyal Rand is to the Quinnipiac program, though. That has to count for something, but it probably counts a lot more to us than it does to other schools.

sounds like typical business. The issue is that it went public before it was finalized

The story may never come out of what went on, but as long as he never said there was a deal or he would accept, I see no issue with letting Qpac counter. That is just being smart on his end.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

This happens multiple times an off season in college football. It happened last summer with Mark Dennehy, getting a raise and extension from MC to not pursue jobs at Providence and NU.

I'm assuming the initial source was out of the UMass athletics office, and this report probably came out of the Quinnipiac athletics office. If someone at UMass thought it was such a done deal that they could leak it to the press, then I wonder what the real story is. I do hope we find out, and I really hope it was overabundance of excitement from someone in the UMass athletics office, and that they were never as close as they made it appear.

Because if this was as close as the UMass report appeared to be, then, quite frankly, it's a bit of a poor job by Rand.

It's a business. If he got more money from Q-pac and backed out of his deal with UMass, it happens.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Wow this is starting to look a little messy. Obviously not good when this far along in the offseason. Union lost Nate Leaman at the end of the season but had a relatively long time to make the spring to summer to fall transition and there was a logical successor already in the house. I'm wondering if QPac has the right to match any offer and also if our assistant Joe Dumais would be a possible candidate if he leaves? I'd hate to lose Joe, he's done a great job at Union and is a real high energy guy.

Well, Chip Malafronte in the New Haven Register (who's their hockey beat writer) says Rand is definitely saying, said this "episode" is over. So, it looks like Dumais is safely at Union.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2012 Offseason

Wow... had my head stuck at work only to come home to all this. I guess until we hear from someone in an official capacity, whatever happened (or didn't happen) is just speculation. Since multiple people are reporting the same story, it sure sounds like Rand is staying which is fine by me. July is not the time to be starting a coaching search.

Normally July would not be the time to do a coaching search but since Cahoon stepped down late, UMass has no choice. It will be a challenge for the coach who accepts the position and the school that loses that coach. Never easy to make these moves this late in the offseason.
