Quick Question

Re: Quick Question

Puck was the consumate college hockey fan. He had more experience across the board than anyone else I have read here. He loved the game, and he loved discussing it. He loved his Pios, but he appreciated what all programs had to offer and had actually seen games in just about every venue in the country over a lot of years. When Denver won the first of their recent back-to-backs, nearly everyone wanted to congratulate Swami, he was that much of a class act. I miss his presence here greatly. In my view, he was the gold standard.

Re: Quick Question

Swami stopped posting in part because he grew tired of the ire directed at him by some when he dared to be critical, either of his team, or of other college hockey teams. I guess it occasionally got pretty ridiculous. I believe he also felt like the discourse on this forum was worth a lot less of his time by 2011 than it was when he was a newbie like the rest of us.

As for his respect level on this forum, I'd agree with everyone else and say it was off the charts. He was never petty, his opinions always seemed to come from places of knowledge, and this board is a lot less interesting with him in the USCHO witness security program.

Re: Quick Question

JDUBBS starting a thread asking about the credibility of a writer... why did I just know right away it was some writing about the Gophers?

It's unfortunate. Before I started posting here I lurked, and always enjoyed reading his thoughts on various subjects.

Just so we are all clear Swami said the state of Minnesota not the University of Minnesota men's ice hockey team.

He quite clearly refers to the University of Minnesota as the most important program in the country and explains why. Though I don't want to rehash old debates. It's just his opinion, which is similar to mine, so I posted because I always got slammed for saying it.

Re: Quick Question

Swami valued the game, whether it was played by Canadians, Californians, Minnesotans, or snotgurgles. He was proud of the Pios, but he was modest to a fault and would never have dwelled on their successes.

No, you get slammed for acting like a c*cksucker.

Re: Quick Question

You didn't get slammed for saying it. You got slammed for the way you said it. And the frequency that you repeated it. And the non-stop insults you hurled at anyone who argued otherwise, or at those who tooted the horn of their own programs.

Swami wrote many complimentary items about many teams, and understood that it's not a zero sum game. Saying something nice about one program doesn't have to come at the expense of any or all other programs.

You were right, I glanced through his quote on my phone and clearly missed what he said. Again, you're right and I'm sure that's the first time you've ever heard that on this board.

Re: Quick Question

The Swami was good. I'm saddened to see that he is off his meds since leaving USCHO.

Probably is the first time :)

Thanks for being a good sport. Obviously just one man's opinion. Just thought I'd post because of his reputation here in contrast to mine and the similarity in our message. Just in good fun :)

Actually, I got slammed from the minute I first mentioned it. And the context and manner in which I first mentioned it were quite appropriate, but because I was new and a Gopher fan I was given a hard time and called arrogant.

Admittedly, I got defensive and didn't drop it, which didn't help matters. And then posted with a chip on my shoulder from that point on. I realized I was being no better than the people who were (in my opinion) unfairly attacking my opinions when I was just being honest, so I took time off.

You also got slammed for trying to be too clever, like this thread. Instead of simply posting a link to Swami's comments, or just directly commenting on them yourself, you tried to be tricky. "What do you all think of Swami? Know what he was talking about? Respected opinions? Hah, gotcha. He said something nice about the gophers, so there."

Re: Quick Question

Actually, JDubb, I haven't heard you say what I read in the Swami's words. He says the UMinne program is the most important college hockey program in America. The most important doesn't have to be the best or most successful or most awesome program on the face of the earth, which is what you prattle on about. There is a difference between most important TO the game, and most successful IN the game. I've never had a beer with the guy, but I don't think he'd appreciate your statement that the two of you have similar opinions on the UMinne hockey program.

I have never once said Minnesota has been the most successful college hockey program. I believe it's Top 5, but I'd give that honor to Michigan. I said they have the most history and tradition, and that the efforts of guys like Mariucci and Brooks at Minnesota were instrumental to the growrh of the sport in Minnesota and this country.

I also said Minnesota has the largest fan base and is the most important program to college hockey and was slammed as well.
