PWHL Rosters & Season

While there are national team stars, in general what we are seeing is the gap between the pool and the ones that always make the roster is not a chasm, that’s great. Awesome work by O’Neill to strip Harmon of the puck in OT leading to a goal.

enjoyed watching The line of 9 16 11 Watts, Mrazova (UMD), Shiga (only Japanese player in league) .

Agree wholeheartedly. Which should make help the PWHL successful, because all fan bases will see not just great talent, but great depth.

Minnesota has scored 2 quick and opportunistic goals in the first half of the 1st period - Heise and Kunin. Frankel is in net for Boston, and Hensley for Minnesota, in an intriguing Team USA goaltender matchup.

What’s obvious now (and great for the game) is that National Team players for Canada and USA are not playing against teams in international competition in which they might get 2,3,4 points per game or more and/or defeating teams 13–1 thus creating a media buzz. All players are now on an equal playing ground.

absolutely. As fans we are getting a completely different perspective on the goalies too. I love it.

Just watching a bit of BOston Minn… I’m such a sucker for the sentimental stuff. Coyne on the ice for the first goal, scored by who else but number 1 overall pick Taylor Heise. Coyne put the body on the line to get the puck out of her zone, Boston got it back but turned it over seconds later in the NZ to Heise who made them pay. Whew, great stuff.

Yeah, the league is putting some excellent goaltending on show. I love the roster depth!

Attendance on the unofficial final MN-BOS gamesheet is 4012, which, though under the arena's capacity, seems solid. A save by Hensley at the final buzzer solidified MN's win, 3-2.

Watched the Minnesota/Boston game last night. I thought it was good hockey. My 13 year old son was also engaged. He mentioned during the game that he hoped the league stuck... they hooked at least one younger fan!

It's so good to have this league getting going. Minnesota reportedly is set to match or break Ottawa's record attendance from this week. I read that the YouTube channel is available in Canada too (not just outside Canada).

I think it's supposed to be geoblocked in Canada. But it appears that is not working. {Let's not tell anyone... :-)}

Love watching these former college players in the PW!!!! Vasko gives TO a 2-1 lead in the second over NY. Roque and Spooner the other goal scorers.

Adult jerseys are completely sold out on the pw shop and a lot of the youth too. I have a Minnesota jersey coming to me lol, because I realized waiting for ottawa to restock might be a losing strategy. That one shipped pretty asap, and should arrive soon.

I had a separate order that I made Dec 22 that I got charged for but seems a little more of a project for the store…we’ll see what transpires and how long it takes to get, if I do. Because I’m getting the jersey I’m not TOO worked up if I have to get a refund.

I’m happy stuff is selling, but it’s always interesting to see this scenario repeats itself in women’s sport; how challenging it is to gauge the demand. From watching on tv… it definitely looks like they have them at games to sell. Awesome!

Among other things, last night it was special to see the first short-handed goal. Per the league's short-handed rule, Toronto's short-handed goal led them to get their player out of the box. Toronto won 3-2 at New York and outplayed them for much of the 2nd and 3rd.

There was an adamant no-goal call that was disappointing to the home crowd. At that time, a goal was set to put New York up 3-2. One valid reason for the "no goal" is goaltender interference - a New York stick probably bumps Campbell's pad. It also may be the referee already was about to whistle the play dead with Campbell controlling the puck; it was still difficult to track where the puck was from replays. Oh, well. Minnesota-Montreal this afternoon may have an attendance of 12,000 or more, according to the PWHL reddit. Whoa!

As a New York supporter, I wanted to see whether we could match the attendance of, for example, Boston. But we were 2152 fans in the rink - so a little lower than Toronto's sold-out attendance.

I'm a NY fan too although I live in MA, but fear that until they actually find an arena in the city, attendance will suffer. Same with Boston but here at least they possibly could get BU's Agannis (or alternatively BC or Northeastern) for some games which would be perfect as it holds about 8k. Lowell is a great arena but not close enough to the hub. Unfortunately no NYC colleges play hockey so it's tough. That said, if the fans are there they'll figure it out. Although a nice arena in Bridgeport it also is too far from the action and suburban CT is not a hotbed like MN or MA. Watching MN now with a full arena, it looks fantastic.

NYC is not, and never will be a hockey hot bed, becoming that doesn't happen overnight. Closest area for that is northern NJ, just like all the NYC football, gonna have to move south to succeed- link up with the Devils. If that doesn't work, try Philly!!

Five or more New York home games will be in the NY Islanders' UBS Arena - which is about half of the 12 home games this season. I'm excited about that. Your suggestion about Philly is interesting, and I believe Philly, Washington DC, and Calgary are high on the list of possible places they'll expand to. That is probably something they will add on, though, rather than moving the New York team away entirely.

The enthusiastic Minnesota crowd looked great (13,316).

I believe it’s six at UBS. Split evenly between Bridgeport.

Yes, I think an even split is their goal, but it's a bit complicated as some game locations aren't announced yet. The NY team currently has 3 of 12 games marked TBD as to location and time of day (4/21, 4/30, and 5/4). Of their remaining 9 games, 4 are at UBS, and 5 are in Bridgeport. Some of the "TBD" reportedly depends whether teams like the NY Islanders make the playoffs and so need the rinks. Stan Kasten also said, though, that the league would like to do some neutral-ice games more generally.

The games hosted by other teams with locations TBD are 2/27 (Toronto at Minnesota) and 3/16 (Ottawa at Boston, and Toronto at Montreal).

Games this week (besides today's one being rescheduled):
Montreal at NY 7PM ET Wed (UBS Arena)
Toronto at Minnesota 7PM CT Wed
and then 3 more games Sat and Sun, involving all 6 teams. Excited to see more PWHL.
