Providence Friars 2014 - 2015 Season

Re: Providence Friars 2014 - 2015 Season

The recruiting is a bit of a puzzle. I know for a fact at least 2 players were extremely interested in Providence and were told they had no interest in them, even if they were to take a gap year this year. Both players ended up with offers from teams ranked in the Top 10. It's hard to believe they would not have helped this team, and it's not like superstars have been recruited in their place.

Great honor to Lacasse. Strange quote in story. Nice to see her stock continue to rise!

Must have been from New England..... :)

From Fosters Daily Democrat:
Family ties, and hockey, lead Burzynski to Providence

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — “Senior Night,” the tradition in which high school senior athletes are honored before their last home game, might be a little more meaningful for Berwick Academy ice hockey player Tilly Burzynski this year. After all, Burzynski has been attending Berwick for 12 years and has played on the girls varsity hockey team since she was in seventh grade.

“It’s going to be bittersweet leaving,” Burzynski said. “Being a senior now, it’s crazy to look back on how much I’ve changed as a player, and how much the team has changed too.”

When Burzynski’s final game as a Berwick Bulldogs wraps up, it will mark the end of just one chapter of her hockey-playing life. On Tuesday, Burzynski signed on to play hockey at Providence College on a partial scholarship.

That the Bulldogs are coming off an appearance in the NEPSAC tournament and Burzynski, from Rye, is headed to a Division I college to play hockey only highlights how far she, and the Berwick program, have come since she first suited up for the varsity team five winters ago.

“When I started, we were struggling to get a team together,” said Burzynski, a forward. “Now we’re excelling beyond what people who thought we could.”

The decision to attend Providence was partly accidental, but it stemmed from a desire to follow her two older siblings, Anya and Gregory, who both played hockey at Berwick and attended Providence (though neither played for the Friars’ hockey teams). Anya graduated from Providence in 2014 and Gregory is currently a junior.

“I started playing in seventh grade and that year my sister (Anya) was a senior,” said Tilly, who also plays lacrosse for BA. “I was the youngest on the team and my sister was the oldest. It was really cool to have her to look up to.”

Burzynski said she knew she had the talent to play hockey at the college level, but the thought of playing D-I was kept in the back-burner of her mind.

“I looked a lot at the NESCAC schools and a few other D-I schools,” Burzynski said. “But mostly I was thinking I’d end up at a D-III school.”

She was exposed to numerous D-I coaches when she worked out at the New England Hockey Festival last spring.

“That really helped with the whole recruiting thing,” Burzynski said. “A lot of the coaches are D-I coaches, and they do a lot of recruiting from that camp. That was pretty much determined what I was going to do.”

Having two older siblings at Providence helped steer her in the Friars’ direction.

“I fell in love with it,” she said of the college. “But I didn’t think it would be possible to play hockey there. I thought that was out of the question. But it was always in my mind. I just didn’t think it would happen.”

Berwick coach Pat McNulty said Burzynski is a fierce competitor who leaves nothing on the bench and everything on the ice.

“She works extremely hard in practice and her work ethic should translate into playing time in college,” McNulty said. “The one thing I will always remember about her is how much fun she’s having when she’s on the ice.”

Burzynski said she hasn’t decided on a major yet but is leaning toward business. She said her experience at Berwick will help her transition to the rigors of college life.

“It’s definitely a big step up,” Burzynski said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge, a transition. But what I’ve gained from my Berwick experience, especially the work ethic, that will definitely help me with that transition.”

She’s also looking forward to a big year on the ice for her and the Bulldogs. She will be a captain, and needs only 20 points to reach the 100-point milestone.

“There’s always been a little more pressure to produce,” Burzynski said. “Now with my college decision off my shoulders, I think I’ll be able to let go on the ice more, have fun. Plus being a senior will be fun. We have a lot of new players this year.”

She appears to be a nice kid, the story is very nice, and it is good to see Deraney get a New England recruit, but this is not the type of player who is going to turn Providence around. She is probably a 3rd or 4th line player (even in Providence's depleted state) who may as a Junior or Senior work her way up to the 2nd line depending on what kind of recruits are brought in (sort of like Abby Gauthier from St Mary's of Lynn - best MA public HS player ever at the time who didn't contribute a lot until her Jr and Sr years as the quality of the recruited forwards started to drop off and she adjusted to D1 hockey). Providence really needs to land some immediate impact, high potential players at this point - not a bunch of pluggers and chuggers....

East33, Any info on the incoming recruiting class for 2015 or 2016?

Two members of the Oakville Hornets Jr (Ontario, IAA) team in the PWHA, Cassidy McPherson and Christina Putigna are confirmed to join Providence College for the 2015-2016 season.

Going to be at the game tomorrow against Brown! I have to admit I haven't seen the Friars play in over two years, and I haven't followed them too much. Anyone specific I should keep an eye on? I'm more familiar with Brown because of family connections, but tomorrow's game should be entertaining!

Groundhog Day?

another game with shots much in their favor....and yet another typical loss to a bad team.

Re: Providence Friars 2014 - 2015 Season

With last nights loss the Friars head to a month long break at 3-14-3 overall record. If the season ended today they would make the playoffs, but to remain in this spot they need to find some offense. Averaging 1.5 goals for per game and giving up over 3.5 will not keep them there in the second half.

Re: Providence Friars 2014 - 2015 Season

Super and well deserved - maybe a sign of better days to come for the program!

Hanrahan Named Hockey East Player Of The Week
The senior earned the award after recording four goals and three assists last week.

Jan. 12, 2015
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Providence College women's hockey senior forward Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) has been named Hockey East Warrior Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday, Jan. 12.

Hanrahan was named player of the week after helping Providence to a weekend sweep over UNH (1/10-1/11) and a tie at RPI (1/6).
Against RPI to start of the week, Hanrahan had the game-tying goal in the third period in addition to gathering an assist earlier in the contest. Versus UNH on Saturday at Schneider Arena, Hanrahan recorded an empty net goal to seal the Friars' 3-1 victory. In the series finale on Sunday, the senior scored the game-winning goal as well as assisting the first goal of the game and the last goal of the game in a 4-1 win.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 18 when they host the Hockey East series finale against Maine at Schneider Arena. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m.

Re: Providence Friars 2014 - 2015 Season

Sorry to see the Friars knocked out by BC and not make the Hockey East Play Off on the Cape for the second year.

Hats off to seniors Beth Hanrahan and Haley Frade who played in every game of their career and move into a tie for first place in career games played at Providence with 143. Also to Seniors Brooke Simpson and Allison Micheletti are now tied for third with 142 games played.

Congratulations also to Seniors Suzy Lundeen, Victoria Virtue and 5th year Grad Student Stephanie Demars for a great career!

2014-15 to date 6-25-4 Overall (5-15-1 Conference)

2013-14 11-24-0 Overall (6-15-0 Hockey East)
2012-13 15-16-5 Overall (8-10-3 Hockey East)
2011-12 16-17-4 Overall (11-8-2 Hockey East)
2010-11 22-12-1 Overall (12-8-1 Hockey East)
2009-10 15-11-9 Overall (11-5-5 Hockey East)
2008-9 17-16-3 Overall (12(1)-8-1 Hockey East)
2007-08 16-16-4 (10-8-3 Hockey East)

The road to success at the program looks like it will continue with Coach Deraney as he is under contract to 2017. Looking at his overall body of work he is one of the most accomplished coaches in the game. Hopefully the facilities can allow a step up in recruits and results.
