Providence Friars 2013-14 Comments “Special Season”
The Team met yesterday and begins testing today. Big 2013-14 season is just around the corner and the Friars have a chance to challenge for HE Championship and perhaps beyond in this Olympic Year. I will post this here before the new thread for the season. A lot to be excited about if you are in Friar-Town or a part of Friar Nation.
Facts
Sparkling New Schneider Arena Re-Opens September 27th.
The Friars return an amazing 81% of goals and 80% of assists.
The team has proven scoring, depth and experience at D and three goalies vying for the net.
They will have a roster of 24 players, an increase of 1 over last year, with 4 seniors, 7 juniors, 7 sophomores and 6 new/freshman (2 F and 4 D).
Four players will be battling to get on the ice each game barring injuries.
The roster is made up of 11 forwards, 10 defense and 3 goaltenders.
Last season’s Team had a “never say never attitude and played hard” gaining valuable experience.

Positive Trends
The Team lost through graduation only 3 forwards and 1 D. Graduating were Nicole Anderson (35 TP 19 G, 16 A) who had a career year, Jesse Vella (25 TP 13 G, 12 A) who always went 120%, steady D Emily Groth (6 TP 0 G 6 A) and Jessica Cohen (#16 TP 0 G 5 A) who battled injuries in her final season. Collectively they represented 19% of goal and 20% of assist production. Prentice Basten who appeared in 13 games as a freshman did not return.
In one less game the Team generated 118 goals (4th behind BC 154, NU 138, BU 127), 17 more an increase of 18% and an average of 3.2 vs 2.6 over 2011-12. This uptick should continue in 2013-14.
On the Power Play the Team generated 23 goals which was an increase of 28% on 26 fewer attempts for a conversion of 14.7% (this was 5th with BC at 28.1%, NH 24.1%, NU 22.4%, BU 22.1%) over the prior year 9.9% rate. There is a great opportunity to improve on last years PP.
The Team lowered penalties to 158 for 321 minutes versus 215 and 452 last year - iscipline and maturity should continue this improvement.
The Team also improved on penalty kill from 13.5% to 23.4% - look for further improvement.
Defensively
The Team limited shots to 987 versus 1133 last year but yielded 45 more goals. This has every reason to reverse and improve over last year.
Three goalies played over the season two freshman Bryant (3.15 GA .882 SP) and Morse (3.57 GA .812 SP); and one junior Riley (3.86 GA .871 SP) - projecting with experience a big step up in results and a lower GAA here.
The Team blocked 430 shots - this is a trend total that can increase further with speed and size of the Team.
Attendance
PC drew 6th in average HE attendance at 249 per game – with the new arena and this Team every reason to believe this will jump.
GO FRIARS!
