Providence Friars 2012-13

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

So week 3 is a Sweep over Vermont during Alumni Weekend! Great effort 4-3 with one freshman goalie Morse and 5-1 with another Bryant today - in each game the Team held Vermont under 20 shots. Each game Buie was on the Board perhaps a great go forward trend!

The young Team is 3-3. Last year after week 3 and the same opponents PC started 1-4-1. This year Friars are scoring 3.0 goals a game including 1 shut out last year 1.1 goals. In the 3 wins we scored 4 or more goals. Lots of balanced scoring emerging. A total of 15 Friars have a point Sr class 4 with 14 collective points, Jr 3 with 9 points, Soph 3 with 9 points and Fr 5 with 12 points.

The Team has given up 19 goals to last years 16. Perhaps 4 home games makes a difference.

GOALS BY PERIOD - the third period is an opportunity
1st 2nd 3rd Total
PC 4 9 5 18
Opp 4 7 8 19

SAVES BY PERIOD - this is a large step forward and speaks to a full Team effort on D to limit shots and play controlled hockey in the offensive zone. When this Team moves the puck they are very impressive.
1st 2nd 3rd Total
PC 41 39 40 120
Opp 40 54 58 152

So one game at a time but great start!

Go Friars!

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Good 3 point weekend against WCHA foe SCSU Huskies and moving Friars to 4-3-1.

The 3-3 tie on Saturday was hard earned after falling behind 2-0. The Friars outshot the Huskies, a very positive trend over a year ago where to many times the Friars were out shot.

Sunday ended 4-2 on the power of Nicole Anderson's Hat Trick including the Teams first PP goal. At 1 for 37 (Yikes 2.7%) on the PP the Friars look like they are gaining patience to move the puck and get good shots.

The Team supported freshman Bryant in goal over the whole weekend. The Team doesn't publish the stat (or at least I can't find it) but I love the way the Team is getting sticks, skates and bodies on the puck to block shots!

Big road trip to Maine coming up with games on Friday and Saturday - lets hope Sandy doesn't deliver a disruption to the preparation.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Wow Friars are having fun and rolling moving to 6-3-1 after a sweep on the road at Maine with 4-3 and 5-1 wins.

Strong defense continued as the Friars out shot Maine 41-19 and 33-19. Great puck movement ended up with broad scoring as six different Friars scored over the series - Frade scored 1 and 2 Saturday, Illikainen had a goal each day and Slattery, Micheletti, Hanrahan and Vella each chipped in one. Freshman Bryant started both games and made some big saves. Big game on Wednesday versus Boston College at Conte.

GO FRIARS!

The young Friars have now moved to 7-4-2 overall, 5-1-1 atop Hockey East and 5-1-2 on home ice.

For the week they were 1-1-1.

The week included a thumping at BC 6-1 where they took a 1-0 lead at the end of 1, but then ran into the quicknesses and puck movement of BC - they will meet again and sometimes the best lessons come from a defeat.

Saturday a comeback thriller over UCONN 5-3 was a nice look at calm don't panic and never quit. Riley came off the bench and made several huge saves to shift the momentum. Anderson came up big with 2 G both pretty and Romanchuk had the game winner for her first college goal.

The Sunday Showdown at Schneider 2-2 tie with UNH was super charged with good crowd and including Alums from both Teams. Pendleton added her first G of the year and Vella her 7th. UNH fans are die hard and it was great to have them up in the Friar Room including many player parents plus Hux and DC! The greatest hockey events involve friends! Both Teams are young and have freshman playing with big impact. I was impressed with the UNH speed, puck movement and the ability to make the ice BIG! UNH outshoot PC despite lots of blocked shots! Riley was my 1-2-3 STAR of game coming up huge in goal!!

The balanced scoring by committee has been impressive driving a scoring average of 3.2 goals per game, 12 players who have played in all 12 games have 3 points or more. Senior captains Anderson (8 G 5 A) and Vella (7 G 4 A) are having great seasons. Freshman, Sophmores, Juniors and Seniors are all stepping up.

Defensively PC has used all 3 goalies this season with good success. Injuries at D have resulted in lots of play for the remaining D including two freshman Slattery and Romanchuk. The team has turned last years general outcome of being outshot to instead outshooting opponents by getting sticks and bodies on pucks not letting them get to the net you have to believe there are some serious bruises from the effort.

GO FRIARS!

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Big Week last week for Friars.

The 2013-14 Providence National Letters of Intent looks like 3 to date from Minnesota (posted on the recruiting thread)
Kendra Goodrich, D, Rosemount HS, Rosemount, MN (past teammate to current Friar Alison Micheletti); Liv Halvorson, Benilde St Margaret HS; Arianna Reid, D, Lakeville South, Lakeville, MN (her HS Coach is hockey legend Natalie Darwitz).

Friars had two road games this week and played with Morse out of the line up at D. A set back at BU 7-1 Friday night without Morse at D and Buie at F, the good news is they get two more chances at the end of the month in a home and home. Sunday the Friars took a 2-2 at Vermont in a game they largely controlled. Nice to see Virtue back at D in the line up and playing strong!

Fun week in Providence with the annual Brown showdown Friday and then Union on Sunday. Happy Thanksgiving to Friars everywhere!

GO FRIARS!!

Carels picks Providence College offer

The state of Rhode Island is a long way from home, but it was the place Cassidy Carels felt most at home when she weighed her multiple NCAA offers.

In the end, it was that feeling that sealed the deal for the 17-year-old member of Canada’s under-18 women’s hockey team. The native of Bruxelles — located south of Spruce Woods Provincial Park — has verbally committed to accept a full scholarship to play Division 1 women’s hockey for the Providence College Friars in 2013-14.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

The Friars ended their 2012-13 campaign against a very good #4 Ranked BU Team in the Hockey East Championship Semifinals. The Friars finished 5th in Hockey East regular season and with an overall record of 15-16-5. The Team was young with 8 freshman, 7 sophomores (one redshirt) 4 juniors and 4 seniors but learned fast and competed similar to the 2011-12 edition. They had a never say never attitude and played hard.

From the Hockey East Stats Page
http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/women/statistics/1213/oateam.php

In one less game the Team generated 118 goals (4th behind BC 154, NU 138, BU 127), 17 more an increase of 18% and an average of 3.2 vs 2.6 over the previous year. On the Power Play the Team generated 23 goals which was an increase of 28% on 26 fewer attempts for a conversion of 14.7% (this was 5th with BC at 28.1%, NH 24.1%, NU 22.4%, BU 22.1%) over the prior year 9.9% rate.

The Team lowered penalties to 158 for 321 minutes versus 215 and 452 last year. The Team also improved on penalty kill from 13.5% to 23.4% this year.

Defensively the Team limited shots to 987 versus 1133 last year but yielded 45 more goals. The three goalies played over the season two freshman Bryant (3.15 GA .882 SP) and Morse (3.57 GA .812 SP); and one junior Riley (3.86 GA .871 SP). In addition the Team blocked 430 shots.

Looking forward the Team is losing 3 forwards and 1 D. Graduating are Anderson (#1 TP 19 G, 16 A), Vella (#6 TP 13 G, 12 A), Groth (#15 TP 0 G 6 A) and Cohen (#16 TP 0 G 5 A) representing 19% of goals and 20% of assists.

Attendance - PC drew 6th in average attendance within HE.

Year end banquet was held today in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women's ice hockey team announced its annual year end awards on Saturday, April 26 at the team's year-end Awards Banquet, held at the Providence Marriott Downtown. The Friars also recognized their four graduating seniors at the banquet.

Senior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) was awarded with the team's Most Valuable Player Award. Classmates Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) and Emily Groth (Monona, Wis.) were awarded with the team's Captain's Award and the Unsung Hero Award, respectively.

Four other team awards were given out, including the team's Most Improved Player Award, the Seventh Player Award, the Coaches' Award and the team's Academic Award. Vella was awarded with the team's 2012 Academic Award.

The Academic Award is presented to the player with the highest cumulative grade point average from the spring semester of 2012 through the fall semester of the 2012 academic year. Runner-ups for the award included seniors Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska), who achieved an impressive 3.93 as a Global Studies and Philosophy double major and Anderson, who was third on the team with an outstanding GPA of 3.66 as a Psychology major. Vella earned the honor with a remarkable 3.96 GPA as a Health Policy Management major.

Vella was also awarded with the team's 2013 Captains Award, which is annually presented to the captain of the Providence College women's ice hockey team. Vella was a standout leader during her four years with the program. This explosive forward notched three game-winning tallies and was a key component to the Friars special teams. She was recognized once during her senior season with Player of the Week honors from the league.

Freshman Courtney Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) was awarded with the team's Most Improved Player award. The award is given to the player voted by her teammates to have shown the greatest improvement over the course of the season. It was the third year in a row that a freshman was recognized with the teams Most Improved Player award. "Courtney brings a combination of hard work and humility to the rink every day, which has allowed her to continuously develop her game," Assistant Coach Melanie Ruzzi shared about Kukowski. "It is clear from watching the way she communicates with her line mates and our staff that she thinks about the game and is absorbing as much knowledge as she can to contribute to the success of the team. It is without question, she loves to play. She is willing to step outside her comfort zone to constantly challenge herself because she knows it will eventually lead to greatness."

Sophomore sensation Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, Mass.) was recognized with the team's Seventh Player Award. The award recognizes the player who performed above and beyond expectations throughout the season. The Seventh Player contributes heavily to the overall success of the team, yet did not receive the recognition she deserves. This year, Simpson enjoyed a breakout season from her forward position, tallying a career-high 26 points on seven goals and a team-best 19 assists.

The fifth award of the night was given to Groth as the Unsung Hero for the 2012-13 season. The Unsung Hero Award is presented to the player, voted by her teammates, who consistently contributed to the team and its success, but did not necessarily receive the recognition that she deserved. "The more the struggle the more the admiration for someone when they reach their achievements," Head Coach Bob Deraney shared about Groth. "I have the utmost admiration for Emily. It is not the number of minutes you play but the quality of those minutes. Every shift she played was vital to the success of the team."

The team's 2013 Coaches' Award was given to junior defenseman Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.). Pendleton was recognized by the coaching staff as the player that excelled beyond expectations at her position. Pendleton had a standout season for the Friars collecting a career-high 19 points. Fourteen of her 19 points came in league play, ranking her tied for fourth among all Hockey East defensemen.

The final award of the night was the team's Most Valuable Player Award. The recipient is voted upon by the team and honors the player whose contributions to the team were unequaled and vital to the success of the team as a whole. This year, Anderson had a career best season for the Friars. She led the team in scoring with 35 points, more than doubling her previous single-season high. She led the team in goals with a career-best 19. Her 35 points this season nearly eclipsed her career total of 36 points entering her senior season. This season she had seven multi-point games, including two hat tricks. She was named Hockey East Player of The Week on October 29 and again on March 4 for her play in the Hockey East quarterfinals, where she tallied three points in the comeback overtime win at New Hampshire.

Prior to the awards presentation the four graduating seniors were honored for their contributions to both the College and the women's ice hockey program.

The class of 2013 were together for a total of 68 victories. They helped the Friars become the only team in Hockey East to advance to the semifinals 11 straight times since the leagues inauguration. The foursome were on the ice for two historical program achievements; the team's 300th win in Schneider Arena and the team's 600th over all win. They were apart of the squad that became the first Hockey East team to defeat New Hampshire in the Whittemore Center. Lastly, they were members of the 2009-10 team that won the Hockey East Regular Season title.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

From a note from Coach Deraney sent to Alums and fans today

......We are excited to be adding 6 talented new players to this already potent returning line-up. Cass Carels (a F on the 2013 Canadian U18 World Championship Gold Medal Team) from Manitoba, Kendra Goodrich (D), Liv Halvorson (F/D) and Arianna Reid (D) from Minnesota, Ariana Buxman (D) from Colorado and Janine Weber (a F on the Austrian National Team) from Austria.

To give you an update on the Schneider Renovation Project, all I can say is WOW! I have had the opportunity to sit in on meetings about facilities, rooms, décor, lockers, technology, functionality and much more. I was fortunate enough to get a walkthrough of the construction site last week. Everything they are doing is first rate and top of the line. They have had 120 people on site, six days a week and a project manager said “It’s been a very long time since I have been on a project this aggressive”. All signs point to a September 2013 opening. When the Schneider renovation and new construction is complete, it will be the best women’s hockey facility in the country!! The building will finally say what we all have known for so long, that we have been and will continue to be one of the best programs in women’s hockey bar none.

Mark your calendars for September 27, 2013. This will be the grand reopening of Schneider arena. Please plan to attend this special event. This monumental occasion IS ONLY POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF ALL YOU and all of the different types of contributions that have gone into making our program so successful for so long and able to withstand the test of time!! The following day, we will play our exhibition game versus McGill University.

Can you think of a better way to kick off the 40th season of our program? Yes 40 years!! Watch your emails this summer for the list of Alumni events for the upcoming season and our 40th Anniversary Celebration. We all remember how great the 30th was. It’s hard to believe 10 years has gone by so fast........

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Friar Nation has to love this view of 2013-14!

A little bit of Excel work on the team stats at http://www.uscho.com/standings/hockey-east-women/2012-2013/ and individual stats at http://www.uscho.com/stats/conference/hockey-east-women/2012-2013/ gives the following results for the hits that the various HE teams are taking due to graduation and Olympics:
<center><table>
<tr><td>College</td><td>Goals by <br>top scorers</td><td>... by top scorers<br>who are there<br>next year</td><td>Next year/<br>this year</td>
<tr><td>Boston College</td><td>97</td><td>60</td><td>0.618556701</td>
<tr><td>Boston University</td><td>91</td><td>47</td><td>0.516483516</td>
<tr><td>Connecticut</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>--</td>
<tr><td>Maine</td><td>6</td><td>0</td><td>0</td>
<tr><td>New Hampshire</td><td>32</td><td>20</td><td>0.625</td>
<tr><td>Northeastern</td><td>94</td><td>20</td><td>0.212765957</td>
<tr><td>Providence</td><td>72</td><td>50</td><td>0.694444444</td>
<tr><td>Vermont</td><td>25</td><td>17</td><td>0.68</td>
</table></center>
The right column is obviously a very crude measure, but it's a start. BC survives the loss of Carpenter and the seniors surprisingly well, Northeastern is in serious trouble without Coyne, Providence could mount a serious challenge with good frosh.
