Providence Friars 2012-13

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Women's Ice Hockey Releases 2012-13 Schedule
Friars return nine upperclassmen in the quest for their fourth Hockey East crown.
June 15, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney and his staff have released the team's schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 season. The slate includes 34 games and one exhibition.

The Friars will play 18 contests at Schneider Arena, including the season opening exhibition against Canadian power McGill University on September 29. Other home highlights include visits from WCHA foes Bemidji State and St. Cloud St. The Beavers will travel to Schneider Arena to help PC kick off the regular season on October 5 and again on October 6. St. Cloud will arrive for a pair on October 27 and 28.

Another non-conference highlight will be the 18th Annual Mayor's Cup. Providence will visit cross-town rival Brown on November 23rd at Meehan Auditorium to once again decide city bragging rights. Also of note, Providence will host perennial national power Dartmouth on New Year's Eve, a rematch of last season's match-up at Fenway Park.

The conference portion of the schedule includes a November 30 rematch with visiting Boston University. This past March, Providence pushed the ninth-ranked Terriers to double overtime in the thrilling Hockey East Championship before falling, 2-1. The Friars reached their sixth Hockey East title game by shutting out #7 Northeastern in the semifinals, 2-0. Northeastern will get a rematch at Schneider Arena in the upcoming regular season's finale on February 23.

The upcoming campaign will also feature the Friars' traditional charitable efforts, including the annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser and the Domestic Violence Awareness game.

The 2012-13 PC women's hockey team will feature nine returning upperclassmen from the Hockey East finalists, including seniors Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.), Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska), Emily Groth (Monona, Wisc.) and Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario), as well as former All-Hockey East Rookie selections Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) and Rebecca Morse (Westfield, New Jersey). The group has helped the program continue its trend of advancing to the Hockey East Semifinals or beyond in each of the league's ten years. Providence is also the only Hockey East program never to miss the conference tournament.

Tickets to Providence home games are available by calling the PC Ticket Office, at (401) 865 GOPC, or by visiting Friars.com.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Great news for Friars - two assistant coaches for Deraney in 2012!! Meredith probably recruited most of the Junior and Senior class so should be able to offer great help. Both have strong Minnesota ties.

Women's Ice Hockey Names Meredith Roth Assistant Coach
Roth also served as an assistant coach with the Friars from 2006-2010.
July 25, 2012

PROVIDENCE R.I.-- - Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney announced toady (July 25) that Meredith Roth has been named assistant coach. Roth returns to the Friars after pursuing her masters in Sports Management at the State University of New York at Cortland. Meredith will work alongside former teammate Melanie Ruzzi for the upcoming 2012 - 2013 season. Ruzzi was also hired as an assistant coach June of this summer.

"It is with great pleasure and excitement that we welcome Meredith back to Providence College, our athletic department and especially our hockey program," Deraney said. "She is a very talented coach and an even better person. Meredith is a great addition to our program and our staff. Our players are going to benefit greatly from her return and Melanie and I couldn't be happier."

A 2004 graduate of Providence College with a B.A. in social sciences, Roth was a four-year member of the women's ice hockey team, playing defense all four years. As a Friar, Roth was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team (2004), United States Women's National Hockey Team (2003), U.S. Under-22 National Hockey Team (2003), ECAC Eastern Hockey League All-Tournament Team (2002), and was awarded the 2001 Providence College Women's Hockey Unsung Hero Award. In addition, Roth was co-captain her senior year and an assistant captain during her junior season as well. She helped lead Providence to the 2002 ECAC Championship as well as the 2003 and 2004 Hockey East Titles.

After graduating from Providence, Roth worked as the head coach for the girls' under-16 ice hockey team at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, Minnesota. She coached the team for two seasons (2005 and 2006). From 2006 to 2010 Roth served as the assistant coach for the Providence College women's ice hockey team. She handled recruiting and coached the defensive side of the bench. For the last two years Roth was a volunteer assistant coach for Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. While a volunteer coach for the Cornell Bears, they posted two 30+win seasons and made NCAA Frozen Four appearances each year.

The Friars will hold their first exhibition game of the year on Saturday, September 29th at home against McGill University (7:00 p.m.). The Friars' regular season starts with a home opener against Bemidji State October 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Nice honor for Genevieve - good luck in the selection process!!

Women's Ice Hockey Stand-out Genevieve Lacasse Receives NCAA Woman Of The Year Nomination
Friar women's ice hockey goaltender was named by the Hockey East Conference.

Aug. 10, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College 2012 graduate Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) was recognized last month by both Providence College and Hockey East as being a conference honoree for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The former women's ice hockey goaltender was the only nominee from the Hockey East Conference.

There are a total of 429 female student-athletes from Division I, II, and III colleges and universities that were nominated. The award is given to graduating female-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in their respective sports, academic achievements, and their leadership and service within the community. The pool of 429 athletes will be narrowed down to just 30, with 10 coming from each division. From those 30 candidates nine will be chosen, three from each division. The NCAA Woman of the Year committee will then vote for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year from those top nine. The winner will be announced on October, 14 in Indianapolis at the annual ceremony, where the top-30 honorees will be present.

Lacasse was recently recognized as a Distinguished Student-Athlete from the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW). She completed her four-year career with the Friars in March when she led the team to the Hockey East Championship game with 179.52 minutes of shutout playoff hockey. Lacasse was named a New England Hockey All-Star, a Second Team Hockey East All-Star and Hockey East All-Tournament Team selection. This year, she also won a gold medal with the Canadian National Team at the IIHF World Championships held in Vermont. Lacasse was named Providence College Female Athlete of the Year for Team Sports for the second year in a row. She was also named to the 2012 Hockey East All-Academic Team along with 15 of her teammates this summer. The award is given to those student-athletes that have a grade point average of 3.0 or above for each semester.

Lacasse also set new Providence College records in her last season with the Friars. At the end of her career she broke the college's career victories (64), career games played (127), career saves (3,482) and career shutouts (20) records. She previously reached the Friar mark for saves in a season (948). She also set new Hockey East records for saves in a single tournament (127) and career tournament saves (276), having already earned the mark for saves in a single tournament game last season (58).

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

Joe, hoe do you see PC finishing this year? In the HE and overall? Better, same or below 2011-2012.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

So being a Friar fan I have to think positive! Hockey East will have strong BU, BC and NU - not sure on how Maine, Vermont, UConn, New Hampshire fair?

First Key - Stay healthier than last year - injuries / illness hurt a strong team over the first half of last year.

Second Key - Lacasse was huge last 2 years in goal and Riley plus Morse and Bryant the 2 freshman will compete to fill her net. Success starts here.

Third Key - The 4 returning D Cohen (also great forward), Pendleton, Morse, Virtue played a lot last year, add Groth & 2 freshman D Romanchuk and Slattery incoming give good depth.

Fourth Key - Half of the goals from last year graduated - key is for the Team to improve on putting "the biscuit in the basket" and have more time in offensive zone. The seniors Vella, Anderson and junior Buie can and will score - big wild card is the sophomores DeMars, Micheleti, Frade, Simpson, Hanrahan and freshman Ilakanian, Kukowski, Thunstrom and Basten all have good speed, potential and good size.

Fifth Key - Coaching depth - Deraney has expanded help in 2 good assistants in Ruzzi and Roth, a great volunteer in Thatcher and a great GA in Lacasse. With a young Team lots of chances to improve quickly.

http://www.friars.com/sports/w-hockey/prov-w-hockey-body.html Looks like the Friars 2012-13 Team is back in school, tested and our bonding as a Team. The Friar Hockey Homepage now posts a Tweeter Link and there are some great pictures of leadership taining. People sometimes ask what are the little things that PC does to develop leaders you can kind of see it through the player tweets this week.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

In a note from Coach Deraney looks like upgrades coming to Schneider Arena

......I want to close by again thanking all of you who generously donate to our program on so many different levels and in so many different ways. Your support has never been more appreciated or needed. We plan put a shovel in the ground on October 1st for an approximately $13 Million addition to Schneider Arena. This first class addition is going to make Schneider Arena the premier women’s hockey facility in the country bar none. We want and need you to be a part of this to ensure we can do it right. No donation will be too small. We are excited to say there are going to be some very prominent and special naming opportunities as well and look forward to telling you all more about that in the future.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

WOMEN’S HOCKEY EAST SEASON OPENING
COACHES MEDIA TELECONFERENCE
(SEPT. 20, 2012)

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HEAD COACH BOB DERANEY

Coach do you want to just talk about the Friars and maybe some of the team goals
for the year. What you expect to get out of the first few games of the year of the
season and things you will be working on?

“First and foremost I think we are the youngest that we have ever been in a long time. I
think that when we look at the rosters that we are one of the youngest teams in the league
but I think that also gives us a lot of excitement as well because we’ve got what we feel is
a very close group with a lot to work with. If we aren’t successful this year it won’t be
because of the players it will be because of the coaches. I think that we have a terrific
nucleus coming back. As well as a talented freshmen class coming in that we as coaches
do our jobs that we could surprise some people.”

Coach in terms of, I asked Dave Flint this question earlier, in terms of the program
losing its top goalie, Genevieve Lacasse. Just talk a little bit about how that might
play out and if you know at this point what your plans are?

“To as our goaltenders two freshmen and our returner, Nina Riley, to replace Genevieve
Lacasse is an awfully daunting task for them and we are not going to do that. We are
going to try and play better team defense and allow them to transition at their own pace
and find different ways to play defense until they get up to speed. When you have a
goaltender that has logged as many minutes as Genevieve did over her four years with us
and had the career that she had you can’t replace her and you can’t expect anyone to
replace her. Instead of one person blocking the puck for us I think we are going to
probably need six people. That might be the way that we play defense this year we are
not sure yet. This coming Saturday we will see what we have got and then try and design
a system around it.”

Coach how about some of your returners this year that you think that you might
take the next step this year on either on offense or defense?

“I think what is interesting the way we got to the championship game last year was a
balanced attack. We didn’t have one prolific line we had scoring throughout our line-up
and I think that is going to be our recipe for success this year. I think that you are going
to see Buie, Vella, Frade, Anderson, Simpson, Hanrahan, Micheletti I just think that they
are all going to chip in. I think that makes for the kind of team that has made us
successful over the years as a balanced attack. At the defense position I think that we will
be as strong there as we have ever been. So that leaves us optimistic about our
opportunities but at the end of the day when I look at the rosters we are one of the
youngest teams in the league and obviously there are going to be some growing pains.
The question is how quick can we get over those.”

Coach I asked a few other coaches on the call to just talk about the expanded the
playoff format that we have now and just talk about going back to Hyannis?

“I am one of those people that believe the regular season should mean something you
know. So was I in favor of all eight teams getting in, no I was not but at the same time I
am not in favor of the fact that the buy has caused teams to that have tremendous seasons
not make it to the championship game because of that one week layoff. This is the best
remedy to ensure that the teams that have the best years that finish first and second are
not in a disadvantage playing in the semifinal game. I think in the long run this is the
best short-term solution before getting to best 2 out of 3 but at the same time I think that
the regular season should mean something. Am I excited that all eight teams are in, yes I
am because without question I think that we are the best league in the country from top to
bottom, hands down I don’t think anyone will dispute that. So the fact that all eight
teams are making it really makes it scary with that one game playoff come that first week
in March but I think that it is for the greater good. That is the first step getting to two out
of three in a playoff format that I think would be more of a long-term solution for us.”

Coach please maybe talk a little about the strength of the league. Obviously
Providence and New Hampshire dominated several seasons of the league but now
BC and BU are really starting to come on stronger. Just talk about how the
dynamic of the league has changed since its inception?

“First of all I am really proud to say we have played in six of those Championship games
so I feel pretty good. I think that is one of those things that makes our leagues so good is
the combination of new and old. Everything has to change and you know when a league
gets through its first decade that there would be parody and the talented coaches and
players that we have in our league and the talented players not just in the country but the
world that are attracted in coming and playing here just adds to the reputation of our
league. Its BU and BC that are, deservedly so BC is ranked first and BU is ranked
second and they have tremendous teams but I will tell you something teams 3 trhough 8
any given day can take points from anyone else in the league and I think that’s what
makes it so exciting. Above all you talk about the players and you talk about those teams
and that’s why I don’t have a lot of hair on my head because every week we are trying to
practice and prepare for those teams coming up and you wonder how we are going to
compete. And this year is going to be no different whether it’s the preseason No. 1 or
preseason No. 8 it really doesn’t matter they are all going to be heartly tested
competitions and that is what makes our league so exciting.”

Coach how about talking about some of your freshmen class and anyone that you
feel will come in and make an immediate contribution at this point or is it too early
to tell on that front?

“You know I think that we recruit players that come in and play. So we expect our
recruiting class, out freshmen class to come in and have them all come in and make
contributions. We carry a very small roster and we expect Molly Illikainen, Brittney
Thunstrom, Prentice Basten, Courtney Kukowski, Lexi Romanchuk, Lexi Slattery and
our two freshmen goaltenders Sarah Bryant and Allie Morse all to contribute that is why
they came here. Now it is their opportunity to take advantage of the opportunities that
have been presented to them.”

Women's Ice Hockey Opens With an Exhibition Win Against McGill University, 3-2
The Friars outshot the Martlets, 25-20, in the match-up.
Sept. 29, 2012

Box Score http://www.friars.com/sports/w-hockey/stats/2012-2013/mu0929.html

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team opened its season Saturday, September 29 against visiting McGill University at Schneider Arena. The Friars defeated the Martlets, 3-2.

Just 1:54 into the first period, senior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) capitalized on a turnover at the blue line and scored from the slot early to give the Friars the lead. Freshman Courtney Kukowksi (Apple Valley, Minn.) extended the Friars lead after scoring the second unassisted goal of the period for the Friars. Kukowski's goal beat McGill goaltender Taylor Salisbury from right outside the crease when she put the puck right under the crossbar with a backhand shot.

Freshman goaltender Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) replaced junior Nina Riley (Lexington Mass.), who made 5 saves in the first period, at the start of the second period. McGill cut the Friars lead in half on a power play goal with 13:36 remaining in the second period. Kelsie Moffat scored for the Martlets on the backdoor after a pass through the crease from Leslie Oles. The Martlets evened up the score at 16:20 of the second period on a breakaway goal from Oles. Morse ended the period with 6 saves.

The eventual game winning goal came at 5:58 of the third period after a perfect pass from outside the face-off circle by freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.), whose one-timer from the slot beat Salisbury to give her the eventual game winner. Freshman goaltender Sarah Bryant (Bethleham, Pa.) made some big saves to give the Friars the victory in the third period. Bryant stopped all 7 shots that she faced.

Providence went 0-3 on the power play while McGill scored once on the man advantage out of its four opportunities. The Friars outshot the Martlets, 25-20, in the match-up.

The Friars begin their regular season with a home opener at Schneider Arena on Friday, October 5 against Bemidji State at 7:00 p.m.

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

So one series does not make a season but loved what we saw this weekend in Friartown vs BSU from the WCHA!

Team played hard the first half of game 1 Friday and were up 2-0 (nice for the traditional slow starting Friars). Some penalty issues (4 in the 2nd) slowed the momentum and team couldn't finish on Friday night and went down 3-2. Despite the losss thought Riley was mechanically very strong in goal and showed not only her quickness but was square to puck and had control on shots to get whistles. Loved the Anderson, Simpson, Illikainen line - might be tallest line in D1 - seems like their combined reach goes side board to side board - nice to see Illikainen goal and a SH by Anderson! Shots were 28-26 for BSU which was nice to see considering penalties (5 for PC vs 3 for BSU).

Great to see bonce back on Saturday for 5-1 win - after a 1-1 first it was all Friars! Last year the Friars beat Yale 9-3, Union 5-0 and won all games where they scored 4 or more goals - love to see more 4 goal games this year! I think this PC team may have three balanced lines that can score - heres to more +4 games over 2012-13. Captain Vella was everywhere Saturday giving the Friars their first 2 goals. Buie was not on the Board for the weekend but looked GREAT - she will have goal scoring success this year! I liked the play in goal of Bryant the only goal was kind of fluke on a pass from behind the net - the Team really shut down BSU allowing only 13 shots (I don't know the count but lots of blocked shots). The Friars had 5 penalties to BSU's 7.

Over the weekend 7 D were in the mix and all seemed to play well - great depth! Romanchuk and Slattery looked liked vets back on the blue line not freshman! Soph Virtue was +4 for the weekend!

The Friars mostly played 3 lines over the weekend - the freshman forwards who had regular shifts Illikainen and Kukowski stood out and looked very comfortable in all areas of the ice. Really thought sophmores Micheletti, Frade and Hanrahan looked much stronger/quicker and were great contributors.

The other thing that stood out for the weekend were some of the 2012 Alumni in the building (Jensen, Friedman, Cottrell, Lacasse, Veharanta) - you can tell they care deeply and post game were sharing tips/encouraging several of the players - really neat to see the success being shared and the living Friar community!

Re: Providence Friars 2012-13

So weekend 2 in Erie was mixed.

Great performance on Friday night lost 6-3, 0-0 after 1st, then 3-2 after 2nd and 4-3 game with 4 minutes to go before giving up a late goal and an empty netter. Friars never gave up. The Mercyhurst PP was punishing 4 out of 5 (80%). PC had pretty goals by Illakainen, Morse and Micheletti. The Team also had a strong effort in goal by Freshman Sarah Bryant 33 saves.

Saturday was one of those days where the puck seemed to bounce for the home Team and the Friars went down 5-0 and were outshot in the first 11-3 going down 2-0, then 10-5 to drop to 3-0 and finally outshooting Mercyhurst in the third 11-7. Each team had 5 penalties and only the 5th goal was a PP so Providence made great adjustments to shut down the powerful Mercyhurst PP. Freshman Allie Morse got her first regular season appearance late in the game in relief of Nina Riley who fought hard all day.

Pretty good group of Friar Faithful Road Tripped to Erie. We were impressed with the crowds at Mercyhurst 750 Friday night with lots of students and today with 755 fans including lots of U10 and Midget players who were in town for a Tournament. Rink was nice but we missed Schneider Arena and the Friar Room.....well home again next weekend to host Vermont at Providence.

Mercyhurst was impressive I hope the young Friars get another shot at them later in the year.

GO FRIARS!
