Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

Alex will have 2 yrs of eligibility ...not 1-1/2. My question is does he need to sit out if he is on track academically? or does he get to play in Oct

I think you misunderstood Chris....the 1 1/2 was if he went elsewhere, PC because he is eligible right away gives him more time. The full 2 years.
my understanding is Alix is eligible right away. He never went to another 4 year school. Again my understanding is He recently graduated from an Iowa Community college so he is on track as a junior.

Not sure he is aged out of juniors by the way. His movement mirrors Lavin's....Came in to college as a true freshman. Lavin left PC after 1 st semester sophomore year, went to Omaha 2nd semester, then continued to play at Omaha while he waited to finish his sit out period. Other the other hand I thought Demoupolous is aged out and he is about a month younger than Alex.

That said it really does mean we have too many dmen (9) and someone is going to be upset with playing time. My thought is you go back to the original plan and give Kaib another year of USHL experiemce because he could easily be the odd man out and you want him to get experience. Also that frees up a year of scholarship money

On a side note don't be surprised if a forward or 2 departs because of issues. My understanding is that like Cooley and the bball program Leaman is a no nonsense type of guy and several issues developed in the time there was no coach. I'm guesing one will survive but with a bullseyes on his back, but the other from what I understand mirrors the Goepfert situation and how it can end anyway but the same way Bobby's time ended here would be inconsistent especially with a new sheriff in town laying down the law.

No I didn't misunderstand ChrisP...Alex had 2 years eligibility left regardless of where he went..he only played 1-1/2 yrs.
My question on his immediately being eligible is because I am not sure if there is certain "transfer" paperwork that you file when you leave...or if you just leave, and how that would be treated.....obviously from an academic standpoint there are things that need to be satisfied.

Then if you didn't misunderstand you are wrong. He has 4 seasons of play. He can spread it to 5 years if he does not play one year or is eligible for a medical red shirt a la Damien Cross. In Alex's case Year 1 was his freshman year. Last year was is 2nd year whether he played 2nd semester or not. If he came back to play Junior year elsewhere like Lavin and is not eligible first semester and plays even 1 game second semester he just used his 3rd year. THen you get your 4th year senior year. You don't get to make up the half year you took at PC.

The other possibity is a semantic arguement. Yes technically he would have 2 seasons anywhere but if he went to say Notre Dame he could not have stepped onto the ice until after 1st semester exams, thus 1 full year, his senior year and the 2nd half of his junior year.

When you transfer you have to get a release. To some extent a school can dictate some terms. Pooley would not let Geopfert transfer to a Hockey East school and I thought the same thing when Lavin left we would not let him play at another Hockey East school. However it is not unusual for a kid to leave school go to the USHL for a year because he found himself over his head (Bryan Horan was an example) and then come back to the school to finish out his eligiblity. You do have 5 years to use your 4 years once you start the clock.

Well I think you just told me he has 2 yrs?.. so that makes me wrong?..if he wants to burn those 2 yrs in a year and a half so be it.All I said was he had 2 years regardless of where he went.

Cav - did write what I meant. When you transfer you have to sit out a year. Because AV played the first semester last year, he would have actually been able to play next year (instead of sitting out the full year) starting second semester of his junior year then have his full senior year. Equalling 1 1/2 more years of college play, if he left when his class left. It all doesn't matter now - he's back as a Friar.

Also of more minor recruiting note, Kelly Zajac's little brother Nolan committed to Denver. He just finished a very good season in the USHL and was a highly touted prospect that I hoped maybe maybe maybe would consider U, but no such luck. Of course the offseason coaching movement may not have helped in that respect.. not that you can blame anybody for going to U Denver.

This was from the Union thread. I heard Leaman was after him for PC so possibly Alex's decision was the end of that since we have no money to dish out especially for a defenseman even if it would be for 12-13. Kid had a good rep but was setback a bit by mono last season
