Providence College on the road to Tampa

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

Worst thing about this, the DCU is still a dump of a facility!

Agreed.

In terms of a pregame location, PC should investigate holding it at Citizen Wine Bar right aside the DCU Center. The place is huge and where UML had their pregame back in 2014. Large and very convenient to parking and the arena.

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

UMD is playing some good hockey. That alone should be a good one.

Should be a fun game, UMD beat Leaman and Union in 2011 on their way to their first title. I'm hoping they can do the same. UMD is a fast team that has some stellar defense and one of the best goalies in NCAA hockey.

What is PC like? I know very little about them.

Central Mass. is a blue-collar region that was hard hit when the mills and factories closed and has never really recovered. There's no money to renovate/upgrade an arena in Worcester...

They spent 24 million dollars on it in 2013 renovating the building thus my comment that it is still a dump.

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

Patient, disciplined and very difficult to generate offense against. Opportunistic on the offensive end of the ice.

Don't like to hear that. UMD has had difficulty creating offense this year which is why they lost so many games (most in the tournament field). They had been scoring above their season average with their winning streak but that stopped with the NCHC Title Game

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

PC has a fan meet-up scheduled for Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn, next to the DCU. They are asking fans to RSVP so they can share a headcount with the Hilton Garden / Uno's:
http://alumni.providence.edu/s/1226...&pgid=4420&gid=1&cid=7844&ecid=7844&post_id=0

There are a few dining options immediately next to the DCU. Mezcal Cantina is across the street from the Hilton Garden. St. Vincent's Hospital, across the street from the DCU, has a Dunkin' Donuts.

Figs & Pigs is on the backside of the DCU - on the Foster Street side. Figs & Pigs is usually open until 7 p.m.

Vive Bene and The Citizen Wine Bar are on Commercial Street (which runs parallel to the DCU.

My favorite downtown Worcester restaurant is Armsby Abbey, located at 144 Main Street (a short walk to the DCU). Armsby has one of the best craft beer lists in the United States. Along with a number of highly sought Belgian and European beers, Armsby's frequently rotating draft list includes the best in US craft beer - including Vermont's Hill Farmstead. The Abbey opens for lunch at 11:30 and serves through 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night and offers a spectacular brunch from 10 - 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Crust Bakery is located a few doors down from Armsby - open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Crust offers daily house-made breads and baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and regular sandwiches.

Other dining / drinking options include Shrewsbury Street, Green Street and Highland Street. Shrewsbury Street has a range of restaurants, including a lot of Italian restaurants, pizza restaurants (Volturno is really good and closer to the downtown area), The Fixx Burger Restaurant, 111 Chop House, and a number of sports themed restaurants. Worcester's own Wormtown Brewery has a tap room on Shrewsbury Street. Green Street has a number of sports bars, bars and restaurants, including Smokestack Urban Barbecue, The Dive Bar (owned by Armsby Abbey - American craft beers) and BirchTree Bread Company (a bakery cafe). Crompton Collective - located on Green Street - offers unique shopping, a Farmer's market and other interesting independent offerings.

Bocado Tapas Restaurant & Bar is located close to downtown on Winter Street (which is near Green Street and downtown Worcester). Pepe's Pizza on Franklin Street is also relatively near the downtown area.

Highland Street dining options include The Boyton, a great all-American restaurant and The Sole Proprietor is fantastic for seafood.

There is a Wings over Worcester at 1 Kelly Square (near Green Street). They "may" offer delivery, but I'm not 100%. Blue Jeans Pizza on Park Avenue does offer delivery.

Especially given that they added seats, which was one of the reasons for the "renovation," but they didn't really improve the number of "good" seats (given that they don't usually have a full building anyway).

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

PC is hosting a meet-up before the game at the Hilton Garden / Uno's before Friday's game:
http://alumni.providence.edu/s/1226...=7844&ecid=7844&crid=0&calpgid=299&calcid=949

Worcester is easy to navigate and, for the most part, it is easy to park.

There are some dining options immediately near the DCU.

Along with the aforementioned Uno's in the Hilton Garden, Mezcal (http://www.mezcalcantina.com/) is across the street from the Hilton Garden.

Maxwell Silverman's Toolhouse (https://www.maxwellmaxine.com/) is further down Major Taylor Blvd.

There is a Dunkin' Donuts in St. Vincent's Hospital, directly across from the DCU. A Starbucks and a 99 Restaurant & Pub are close to the DCU, located at 11 E. Central Street (which is next to the Holiday Inn Express).

Figs & Pigs (http://www.figsandpigskitchen.com/) is at the back of the DCU, on the Foster Street side. This is more of a cafe and is only open until 7 p.m. ED.

Commercial Street, which runs parallel to the DCU, has a few restaurants - Viva Bene and The Citizen (http://www.1nichexchange.com/citizen-wine-bar.php) and The People's Kitchen (http://www.1nichexchange.com/the-peoples-kitchen.php).

My absolute favorite downtown Worcester establishment is Armsby Abbey (http://armsbyabbey.com/). Arsmby has one of the best European beer / craft beer lists in the United States and they also have fantastic cocktails and was one of the first farm-to-table restaurants in this area. The kitchen is open through 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday and Sunday, Armsby offers an amazing brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since Easter is this coming Sunday, Armsby is accepting brunch reservations for Easter. Located at 144 Main Street, Armsby is a short walk from the DCU Center.

Armsby Abbey also owns Crust Bake shop (http://www.crustbakeshop.com/), located a few doors down at 118 Main Street. Crust offers a daily selection of house-made breads and baked goods (baked each morning), including great bagels, breakfast sandwiches and regular sandwiches.

There are a number of high-density restaurant areas close to downtown, including Shrewsbury Street, Highland Street and Green Street.

Shrewsbury Street (http://www.shrewsburystreet.org/merchants.htm) has a lot of Italian restaurants, pizza shops, restaurant/bars, and diners.
Boulevard Diner, a vintage diner, is open 24-hours. Volturno (http://volturnopizza.com/) and the Wonder Bar specialize in pizza. 111 Chop House (http://www.111chophouse.com/) is the best steak house in Worcester and Via (http://www.viaitaliantable.com/) has an enclosed patio, bar and regular restaurant seating. The Fix Burger Bar (http://www.thefixburgerbar.com/) has great burger options. There are few general sports bar/restaurant establishments. Leo's Ristorante (http://www.leosristorante.net/) is a Worcester mainstay. Wormtown Brewery (http://wormtownbrewery.com/) is close to the downtown Worcester end of Shrewsbury Street; the taproom is open until 9 p.m. On the very far end of Shrewsbury Street, Padavano's Place (http://www.padavanosplace.com/) and Wexford House (http://wexfordhouse-ma.com/) are good options.

Highland Avenue:
The Boynton (http://www.boyntonrestaurant.com/home.aspx) is a great all-American restaurant. The Sole Proprietor (http://www.thesole.com/) has a great seafood selection.

Green Street:
Smokestack Urban Barbecue (http://www.bbqstack.com/) is lively. There are a few general sports bars on Green Streeet. BirchTree Brad Company (http://www.birchtreebreadcompany.com/) has a lot of breakfast and lucnch selections. Cromton Collective (http://www.cromptoncollective.com/) is electic. There is usually a farmer's market on Saturdays, along with the Reverly Coffee (https://www.facebook.com/RevelryCoffee) pop-up. The Dive Bar (http://thedivebarworcester.com/), which opens at 6 p.m., has a great selection of American craft beer's. This is a cash-only establishment.

Other places near-ish downtown:
Bocado (http://www.bocadotapasbar.com/) - tapas and small plates.

The Kenmore Diner at 250 Franklin Street is open daily from 6 a.m. - 12 p.m. weekdays; 6 a.m. - 1 p.m. weekends (Easter Sunday hours may differ).

Pepe's Pizza at 274 Franklin Street (http://pepesbrickovenpizza.com/)

Coney Island (http://www.coneyislandlunch.com/) at 158 Southbridge Street is a Worcester institution! This is a classic which is approaching its 100th anniversary.

Rosalina's Kitchen on Hamilton Street offers BYOB (http://www.rosalinaskitchen.com/). I think La Cucina Italiana (http://www.lacucinaworcester.com/) also on Hamilton Street, may also be BYOB.

Dino's Ristorante, off of Plantation Street, is another Worcester long-standing restaurant (http://www.dineatdinos.com/).

Blue Jeans Pizza on Park Avenue delivers (http://www.bluejeanspizza.com/). In the Park Avenue area, Ed Hyder's offers sandwiches (http://www.edhyders.com/). Shiraz on Park Avenue has terrific kabobs and salads. Corner Grille (http://www.cornergrille.com/), which is a little further from downtown, has a great pizza and sandwich selection and is BYOB.

.

That's a good description of UML. Hopefully, PC doesn't get dragged into 3 OT's again.

In a parallel universe, that game is still going on.

Re: Providence College on the road to Tampa

If the no goal call stood after review on the game-winner, this seems almost plausible. I'm guessing they'd be somewhere around the 115th OT by now.
