6-0. Not only Hawkey, but also Leahy playing. 5 goalies is in this game.
It was a nice night. Perfect opponent for senior night. They were most obliging. In fact in warm ups I remarked they looked like they certainly didn't want to be here.
Yesterday fishing around the Internet saw an article in what I assume is the student paper. The writer called it the tale of two coaches. I think his point played out. Michelletto was delighted with how his team had played, thought if they played that well again vs Providence Saturday he would be happy to let the cards fall where they may. Leaman appeared to have a laundry list of details the team let lapse. I guess someone shuffled the deck and those cards certainly did not fall UMass's way
God I hope UMass keeps this guy
This game really was more lopsided than the UConn game last year. We just called off the dogs early like in 25 minutes, then played keep away. I think the head shot the UMass captain gave Rooney kind of played in it, that we didn't want this game to get out of hand and lead to injuries (like it appears the NU-Maine game did--similar games in that little was at stake for any of the 4 teams involved, they all went into the night knowing their seedlings. Providence was just looking to avoid injury after 25 minutes
As far as senior day goes. Yesterday mentioned 3 senior classes had won more games, all 3 of those classes lost their senior day game. The PC Win and BC loss not only got us a tie for regular season title, for the moment it leaves PC and BC tied for 2nd most wins in the last 3 years
Noted on Schneiders wall is no mention of any titles previously. Obviously this piece of one is the first in Hockey East. However technically by the ECAC web site in 82-83 there were 3 divisions and thus 3 champions, PC is the East Division champion (the future Hockey East), however PC had the best overall record in ECAC play (unbalanced schedule--twice in division, once with rest of league. PC is declared on the ECAC site as regular season champ in 63-64--not only unbalanced but varying number of games
As for the shutout Jon alluded to. I am pretty sure in about 45 years of seeing PC Play they have never had a combined regular season shutout, never mind a 3 goalie shutout. I believe Sims led a trio the year the infamous Ryan Simpson (Captain Tuttle) debuted at PC in an exhibition game. Gillies was pulled twice with a shutout, in his debut vs Sacred Heart but Stein gave up a pair, last year in a similar situation as last night Gillies and Leahy shutout Connecticut but Ellis surrendered a goal
