Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Wow nice road win!

Women's Ice Hockey Cruises Past #4 Boston College, 6-2
Cottrell leads way with first-career hat trick and an assist.
Feb. 4, 2012

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) tallied her first-career hat-trick and four points as the Providence College women's ice hockey team upended fourth-ranked Boston College, 6-2, at Conte Forum.

It is the second time this season PC has upset a nationally-ranked opponent. The Friars defeated then #7 Boston University, 4-3 on December 3.

Several other Friars joined Cottrell with multi-point games. Senior Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.), junior Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) collected two assists, while sophomore Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) contributed a goal and an assist.

Providence grabbed a 1-0 edge midway through the first period. With the Friars on the power play at 12:34, Gauthier raced down ice to beat a would-be icing call. Gauthier retrieved the puck and centered to a wide open Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) in the slot. The sophomore one-timed home her seventh of the season.

Providence increased the advantage in the middle period. At the 3:04 mark, Morse hammered a slapshot from the right point that was saved. The first rebound was put back on net by Hanrahan. Again the puck was stopped but another rebound kicked to the right of the crease where Cottrell settled and deposited her 11th of the year for a 2-0 Friar lead.

Providence made it 3-0 at 8:33 of the second period. This time it was Morse with the honors, one-timing a Gauthier-feed from the high slot into the back of the net for her second of the year.

Boston College responded with two, quick goals within a span of 1:28. After a Mary Restuccia score at 13:14, junior Taylor Wasylk made it 3-2 when her centering pass redirecting home off a Friar skate.
Providence controlled the third period, erupting for three more scores. At, 4:58, Cottrell fired a wrist shot from the right side, top shelf, for her second of the game. The senior then completed the hat trick at 13:59, flipping home a rebound from just to the right of the crease for her 13th of the season. Finally, at 18:43, the senior joined Hanrahan in assisting Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) to round out the scoring.

Senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) made 37 saves, including all 17 she faced in a pressurized first period. Eagle Corinne Boyles halted 23 shots. It was another milestone win for Lacasse. She now has 60 for her career, a Providence school-record.

The Friars return to action on February 11 with a 2 pm visit to New Hampshire. The next Providence home game is Friday, February 17 when the team welcomes nationally-ranked Northeastern at 7 p.m. Before the game, Providence will celebrate Senior Day by honoring the seven members of the class of 2012. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 Go PC or by visiting Friars.com.

Great honor for a super class guy!

Bob Bellemore Earns AHCA Women's Hockey Assistant Coach Award
Long-time Friar mentor honored for career success.
Feb. 7, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey Assistant Coach Bob Bellemore has been recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association with the 2012 Women's Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Award. The honor lauds the career body of work of an assistant in women's hockey.

It is the latest in a long line of career accomplishments for Bellemore, who has spent the last 19 years as an assistant with the Friars. During that time, he has helped guide Providence to seven conference championships and aided in the development of nine Olympians. He has also been a regular mentor for USA Hockey's elite training camps in Lake Placid, N.Y and is widely regarded as one of the top goaltending coaches in the country.

Coach Bellemore has announced he is retiring after this season.

Prior to his current position, Bellemore served as the goaltending coach for the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils.

As a student-athlete, Bellemore became one of the most decorated goaltenders to play for Providence College. During his sophomore season in 1964, he led PC to its first ECAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Final Four. He was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984 and, this year, he will be inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Hall of Fame.

After graduating, he stayed with the Friar men's program, serving as an assistant for Head Coach Lou Lamoriello. He also spent several years as the Director of Schneider Arena. Away from the ice, Bellemore has served as a teacher and guidance counselor with the Smithfield and South Kingstown public school systems.

This is the second year in a row the award has been given to a former Friar. Last season, the award's first, it was given to Amy Carlson Bourbeau '94 for her work as an assistant at Princeton.

Providence
Allie Morse................G.........Park Cottage Grove HS.......Cottage Grove, MN

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported today that Allie Morse Park Cottage Grove HS has committed to Providence College. She was one of 10 semifinalists for the 2012 Let’s Play Hockey Goalie of the Year Award. Morse was 12-11-1 on the year for the Wolfpack with a 2.39 goals against average and a .916 save percentage in the elite Surburban East Conference. She is 5'5" and is a very athlectic goalie who is strong on handling and playing the puck to set the counter attack.

She was selected to the USA Hockey National Player Development Camp each year she was eligible in 2011, 2010 & 2009. The 2011 camp had 8 goalies and Morse was one of two MN goalies selected. She gave up only one goal in games and was chosen to play in the camp's all-star game.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

After almost getting written off for a such a slow start at the beginning of the season, the Friars really turned it around and showed the toughness and heart that has been a Friar characteristic. Great job today, you have a lot to be proud of!!

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Agree it was a roller coaster season with injuries. Friars probably played thier best hockey over the last month. The Team finished 16-17-4 – look at the record 15 games that were lost by 1 or tied, 1 more goal makes a huge difference today and over the season's tight games.

Consider the Seniors who played their last games today:

Abby Gauthier 37 GP 8 G 21 A 29 Pts
Ashley Cottrell 31 GP 16 G 12 A 28 Pts
Laura Veharanta 37 GP 12 G 15 A 27 Pts
Jennifer Friedman 37 GP 1 G 16 A 17 Pts
Kate Bacon 36 GP 9 G 7 A 16 Pts
Jensen, Christie 30 GP 2 G 8 A 10 Pts

Genevieve Lacasse 31GP 1896 Saves 1.90 GAA 60 GA .938 SAV%

They had a tremendous career and an amazing strecth run!

Today also marked the last day for Coach Bob Bellemore the PC Goalie Coach "Master of All" and perhaps the funniest guy in Hockey as shared to all at the Friday Night Hockey East Banquet in Hyannis, MA. Enjoy your retirement but don't be a stranger to the program!

Very tough loss for Providence. LaCasse certainly deserved a better fate. Outstanding game and season for the Friars.

Agreed. A great career.

Seen her play way back in Midget in Kingston for the Ice Wolves, and she was already good then. She stoned our club team on several occasions when it counted the most. :(

Me thinks she is not quite done yet. TC-U22 and beyond ?. She leaves the Friars with a big hole to fill in Nets.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Forward Brittney Thunstrom of Blaine, MN committed to PC. She was a summer teammate on the MN JR Whitecaps with other incomming Friars Illikainen, Kukowski, Slattery and Morse. She had a couple of injuries but when healthy is a big power forward. She becomes the 10th Minnesota Player on the PC roster for next year.

Thumstrom commits to Providence

Blaine HS senior Brittney Thunstrom missed the section final as she was on a recruiting visit to Providence College and later officially committed to play hockey for the Hockey East Conference team based in Providence, R.I., starting next season.

“I loved the environment, the coaching staff and the facilities. It’s the perfect fit for me,” she said. Playing in one of the national power conferences also played into her decision. Thunstrom had 10 points (five goals) in 15 games this season after leading the team with 30 points (16 goals) in 2010-11, 18 points in 2009-10 and nine points in 2008-09.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Mark your calendars - Friar annual golf outing on Saturday May 5th, 2012 at the Cranston Country Club & Year End Annual Awards Banquet Sunday May 6th, 2012 at the Providence Marriott on Orms St. in downtown Providence.

I attended last year great day of Golf and the Banquet is very unique as every Senior gives a short speech on the personal impact of 4 years at Providence. You realize playing hockey and going to school at PC the players carry forward a lot of lifetime skills. Was surprised/pleased to see the Alumni turnout and you see first hand the strong network all the players become a part of.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

"Let's Play Hockey" lists senior Prentice Basten, F, from Breck High School and Monticello, MN, as being committed to Providence.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Glad to see an increasing number of MN girls considering PC as a great option.

Here is the 2012-13 Roster and the early commitment for 2013-2014.

For anyone who followed the Trevor Mbakwe story in MN and his being granted a unique 6th year to compete for MN Gophers basketball team you could see the same thing awared to Stephane DeMars under similar injury provision.

Women's Ice Hockey Announces Team Awards
Distinguished Alums return to honor Hockey East finalists. May 7, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Some of the greatest players to suit up for Providence College women's ice hockey were in attendance Sunday, helping the current edition of the Friars announce its team awards during the End-of-Year banquet at the Providence Marriott Downtown.

The program began with Head Coach Bob Deraney and his coaching staff honoring the seven members of the graduating class of 2012. The seven seniors include forwards Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.), Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.), Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.), and Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.), defensemen Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C.) and co-captain Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.), and goaltender and co-captain Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario).

Also in attendance were several members of the first Providence College women's ice hockey team, the 1974-75 Friars, and their coaching staff, including the first head coach of the program, Tom Palamara. The Friar seniors presented bouquets to the "original Friars" and thanked them for laying the foundation for the program's success.

Seven team awards, including six voted on by the players and one by the coaching staff, were then presented by former Friar greats:

Cindy Curley '85, third on the Friars all-time scoring list with 225 points and a member of four US World Championship teams, presented the Captains' Awards to Friedman and Lacasse in appreciation for their service to the team.

Providence Assistant Coach and US Olympic silver medalist Karen Thatcher '06 presented the Academic Award to junior Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska), in recognition for her exceptional Grade Point Average as a double major.

Heidi Kenny, one of the original Friars responsible for building the program and creating opportunities for future success, announced the Most Improved Award winner. This year, it was earned by freshman Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, Mass.).

Another US national team alum presented the Coaches' Award. Wendy Cofran '94, a member of three consecutive ECAC championship teams, presented Friedman with the coaching staff's recognition of the player who excelled beyond expectations at her position. Friedman finished her career with a plus/minus rating of +30 and was a conference Honorable Mention All-Star.

The Unsung Hero Award was presented by one of the first scholarship athletes of the program and a former three-sport star. Kathy Lenahan Hurley '81, still among career leaders in every major offensive statistical category, recognized Gauthier with the honor that goes to a student-athlete who consistently contributed to the team's success but did not necessarily receive the recognition she deserved. Gauthier overcame injury to lead the 2011-12 Friars in scoring with 29 points.

There was a tie for the next award. Former Friar All-American Krisitin Gigliotti '07 handed off the Seventh Player Award, signifying the player(s) who performed above and beyond expectations, to defensemen Cohen and Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.). Pendleton contributed a career-best 12 points while Cohen switched positions from her natural forward when the blue line was affected by injuries.

Sara DeCosta Hayes `00, an Olympic gold medal-winning goalie and the Friars' first All-American, revealed the team's MVP award was going to Lacasse for the third year in a row. Lacasse earned the honor after breaking every major goaltending record within the program, as well as several Hockey East marks. She also played over 179 minutes of shutout hockey throughout the tournament in leading the Friars to within 7.7 seconds of their fourth Hockey East Championship.

The banquet completed a full weekend for the program. On Saturday, May 5, the team hosted its annual golf tournament. The event was sponsored by The Rinx and held at the beautiful Cranston Country Club.
