Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Yes great game Friars continuing to come on and getting healthy (two still out)

Joe, I notice that Kate Bacon, the Friars' leading scorer last season with 30 points, is off to a slow start this year - just 3 points in the first 11 games. Has she been one of the players that have been bothered by injury?

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

No Kate is flying. October was tough month with Ashley Cottrell (hurt after BSU series) and Nicole Anderson (hurt in McGill ex game played first games this weekend) Kate and others had a big load to pick up. Friars and Kate with these two back look and generate more attack. The good news down the line is the freshman have gotten experience fast.

I still believe with 7 of 8 leading scorers back from last year this Team can generate lots of offense and will.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

A little BU perspective on Friars

Women’s hockey to finish off Hockey East stretch
Written by Meredith Perri
Published Nov 16, 2011Email This PostComments (0)After a strong offensive win over the University of New Hampshire last weekend, the No. 5 Boston University women’s hockey team will finish off its five-straight games against Hockey East opponents this weekend.

The Terriers (7-4-1, 2-1 Hockey East), who have played the least amount of conference games out of any team in Hockey East so far, will face the University of Connecticut on Saturday and Providence College on Sunday.

While BU has had a strong season thus far, the Terriers have suffered a few setbacks because of injuries to two of the team’s top scorers.

Despite missing sophomore forward Marie-Philip Poulin and senior forward Jenelle Kohanchuk for most of the season, along with a few other players who have had minor injuries, the Terriers have continued to rank in the top three offensively in Hockey East.

“We’re certainly trying to get healthy and get people on board,” said BU coach Brian Durocher. “I think we’re just continuing to try to kind of finish up our systems, get readjusted again to maybe some new lines and just control how hard we play.”

While the Terriers were able to defeat New Hampshire 5-2 their last time out, they were missing another key offensive player in senior captain Jenn Wakefield.

Wakefield missed the past two games due to her participation in the Four Nations Cup with the Canadian national team. During the tournament, Wakefield, who leads the Terriers with 16 points in the 10 games she has played, scored two game-winning tallies en route to a silver medal.

Wakefield returned to Boston on Wednesday after being away from the team for the past two weeks.

For Durocher, though, it isn’t the team’s offense that he is concerned about; rather, he wants the team to work on bettering its defensive performance and limiting the amount of shots opponents get.

“We’ve probably given up too many shots for my liking in the early part of the year and I want to see if we can’t lock ourselves down a little bit and keep teams to a small number of shots,” Durocher said. “Setting our sights and our focus on improving our defense would certainly be number one.”

The Terriers will get their first opportunity to show what they’ve worked on defensively against UConn (1-10-2, 1-4 Hockey East) this weekend.

The Huskies find themselves last in Hockey East offensively as they have only notched 19 goals in 13 games this season.

In its last five games, UConn has managed to score only once and has been shut out four times.

The team fares slightly better defensively where it ranks sixth in the conference, giving up an average of 3.08 goals per game.

“They’re very strong kids, but I don’t know if they’re the outstanding or dynamic offensive presence on that team,” Durocher said. “I think we go into it with the mindset to make sure we don’t give them any easy [goals].”

When BU faced off against the Huskies last season, BU swept the Huskies while outscoring them 10-2.

On Sunday, the Terriers will face off against a very different team in Providence (5-6-3, 4-2-1 Hockey East).
“Unlike UConn, who I think plays a little closer to the vest, Providence has got size, speed and ability up front,” Durocher said. “I think they will be happy to trade you chance-for-chance or even let you have a couple extra chances because they’ve got confidence that they’ve got some kids who can score.”

While Providence does not have the offensive struggle that UConn faces, the Friars’ strength rests in between the pipes. The Friars have the second-best goaltender in the league in senior Genevieve Lacasse who currently holds a 2.31 goals against average this season.

“They know with Genevieve Lacasse back there they can get outshot by eight or 10 and it’s anybody’s hockey game,” Durocher said.

In its most recent outing, Providence defeated New Hampshire 6-2, extending its unbeaten streak to five games.

Providence will take on the University of Vermont on Saturday before taking on BU.

Last season, the Terriers went 2-0-1 against the Friars, while outscoring them 10-6.

Although BU will look to improve its Hockey East standings this weekend, the key for Durocher is to finish out the first half of the season strong.

“It’s been a pretty good run,” Durocher said. “Hopefully before we get the final few pieces back, we’ll continue to do a pretty good job here in the last six or seven games before the break.”

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Thanks for sharing!

Great article from our favorite Friar writer Al Daniel - oh how we miss the Friar Town Free Press Blog by Al!

Micheletti is going to have a great college carrier at PC - she has Kate Bacon speed which is such a gift and great touch around net. PC runs some pretty complex D zone coverage that MN HS players (F and D) have a steep learning curve on but have no doubt she will be an impact player.

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Great 5-0 road win yesterday! Nice to see Nicole Anderson have a BIG DAY on the scoreboard and the Lacasse shutout!

With 18 games done and 16 to go the Team is on the back half of the schedule and stands 7-8-3. Big set of games coming up BU home & home; then Harvard before break; then Dartmouth-Robert Morris (2) at home & then NE and BC on the Road by mid January. Here's hoping the Team can stay healthy and hot to continue the great run of November going 6-2-1.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence college women's ice hockey forward Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) has been named Athletic Republic co-Player of the Week by the Women's Hockey East Association. It is the first time the junior has been recognized with the award.

Hey another neat outdoor opportunity for the Frias (and a free News Years Eve - 3 PM start maybe be tough for some)

TeamsCollege Hockey:
Providence to host Dartmouth in outdoor women’s game at Fenway
USCHO Staff Report • Friday, December 2, 2011

Providence will host Dartmouth in a women’s game at Fenway Park on Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. as part of Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012

The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 31 at Providence.

“The team is very excited about getting to play at Fenway,” Dartmouth head coach Mark Hudak said in a news release. “It should be a great experience for the team and for Providence and for everyone else that is going to be there. It is going to be a great event all around.

“There are going to be a lot of differences, but both teams have to deal with that. It’s not that its going to be an uneven playing field. Hopefully, there will be some ice on Occom Pond by then, so we can get outside and practice a little bit.”

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Great Game on the 3rd. I was impressed and it was great to watch it on CoxSports. The team looks strong! But with a senior class like that, nothing less would be expected. I am at the moment overseas, and I have a team I've started here, that come over and watch the games with me, they have seemed to have adopted PC as their favorites. How long are the injuried girl(s) out? One is disappointed her favorite player hasn't played for a while. Looking forward to watching the rest of the season!

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

Tough night for the Friars, as they lose 5-1 to Harvard

Re: Providence College Friars - 2011-12

This was posted on PC Site - should be a neat experience.

It will also allow the Friars a longer regroup/heal up time as they will go from Harvard game December 8 until Robert Morris on January 6 to perpare for the remainder of the 2011-2012 schedule with the special senior class.

The Friars will face the Big Green in front of the Green Monster
Dec. 14, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team will play an outdoor contest at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. on January 10, 2012. The Friars will take on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. The contest will be part of the 2012 Sun Life Frozen Fenway event. It is a 16-day celebration of hockey featuring collegiate and scholastic games.

"To play the game we love in one of the most historic cathedrals in all of sports is very exciting. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not many college players get the chance to have in their careers," explained Providence Head Coach Bob Deraney, a native of nearby West Roxbury, Mass. "We all thank Fenway Sports Management, Hockey East and especially Providence College for giving us this opportunity.

"For me personally, going to Fenway Park my entire life, I know making the move from the stands to being a part of the action is something very few people from Boston have the opportunity to do. It's not lost on me how very special it is for us to be taking part in such a wonderful event as 2012 Sun Life Frozen Fenway. "

Tickets for the college hockey game are available by phone at 877-REDSOX9 and online at redsox.com/frozenfenway .

The meeting with Dartmouth was originally scheduled to be played at Schneider Arena on December 31. Should inclement weather on January 10 preclude the outdoor game at Fenway, the contest will be moved back to Schneider Arena at 7 p.m. on January 10.

This will be the second time the Friars have played outdoors. Last February, Providence defeated Connecticut, 4-3, at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. during the Whaler Hockey Fest celebration.

Bryant '12 Signs with Providence College

Lawrenceville School Fifth Former Sarah Bryant has signed a National Letter of Intent with Providence College (Providence, RI). Bryant, a tri-sport (ice hockey, soccer, and lacrosse) varsity athlete at the Lawrenceville School, will begin her college career in the fall, playing ice hockey for the NCAA Division I Friars. She plans to major in biology in preparation for medical school or graduate work in physical therapy.
The Bethlehem, Pa. native explained that she chose Providence because of the balance she expects to find there between academics and athletics. She said Bob Deraney, coach of the Friars' women's ice hockey team, told her, "'Excel in everything; sacrifice nothing,'" meaning that I should be able to get an excellent education that will prepare me for life after college, play hockey at the highest college level, and feel right at home on campus. He said that if a college does not offer all of those things to me, I should look somewhere else. At Providence, I found all of those things, and no one of them was at the expense of another."

The goaltender continued, "I also believe that being a part of the Friars' hockey program is going to be a dream come true. The team is in a great conference where they have to work hard to win games, but they are also hungry for a national championship and likely to be a contender every year. The coaches are experienced, knowledgeable about the sport, and truly put the team as their first priority."

Nicole Uliasz, Lawrenceville's Assistant Athletic Director and head coach of the Big Red girl's ice hockey team remarked, ""I have watched Sarah grow and mature on and off the ice these past four years. She is an amazing person and deserves every good thing that comes her way. She will make Lawrenceville proud as she goes on to play at Providence."

Bryant, who first laced up her skates at age seven, is in her fourth year as a member of Lawrenceville's girls' varsity ice hockey team. She also competes for a club team, the New Jersey Colonials. The consistent high honors student said organization is the key to maintaining a healthy balance between her academic and athletic commitments. "I use lots of sticky notes with check lists," she explained.

While she enjoys playing both soccer and lacrosse, her real love is ice hockey. "It's a fast-paced, always changing game of speed, power, finesse and, most importantly, teamwork," she said. "I'm always on my toes, looking to get better. Hockey demands so much of me as an individual, but at the same time, I know that I have a whole team of players on the bench who are there to support me and each other."

Women's Ice Hockey Announces the Signing of Five Student-Athletes
Friars sign Molly Illikainen, Courtney Kukowski, Lexi Slattery, Lexi Romanchuk and Sarah Bryant.
Dec. 21, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Women's Ice Hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney and his coaching staff have announced the signing of five players for the class of 2016. The Friars welcome forwards Molly Illikainen and Courtney Kukowski, defenders Lexi Romanchuk and Lexi Slattery, and goaltender Sarah Bryant to the women's hockey program for the 2012-13 season.

"Not only are they terrific young ladies who come from great families, but they are terrific students who love to compete on and off the ice," Deraney said of the class.

Sarah Bryant, Goaltender, Bethlehem, Pa. - Bryant is a 5-foot 8 goalie from the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. She has also played club hockey for the New Jersey Colonials. Thus far this season at Lawrenceville, Bryant is 5-0 with two shutouts.

"Sarah is a very athletic goaltender that reminds me of (senior) Genevieve Lacasse at this stage of her career," said Deraney. "She is explosive, a terrific skater and has tremendous potential. She is also just as driven academically as she is athletically."

Lexi Romanchuk, Defenseman, San Jose, Calif. - Romanchuk is a 5-foot-6, left-shot defenseman from Valley Christian High School who has played club hockey for the San Jose Junior Sharks and the Anaheim Lady Ducks Under-19 team. Romanchuk also participated in USA Hockey's National Development Camp.

"Lexi is as well-rounded a defenseman as you'll find," explained Deraney. "She has the size, speed and intensity that everyone needs at the defense position. At this stage in her career she is very raw and we are excited with the fact she has just begun to scratch the surface of her capabilities.

Lexi Slattery, Forward, Circle Pines, Minn. - Slattery is a 5-foot-6 , right-shot defenseman from Roseville High School and the Minnesota Junior Whitecaps. Thus far this season for Roseville, she has accounted for 13 points on four goals and nine assists in just nine games. She has five, multi-point games to her credit. Slattery also participated in the National Development Camp.

"Lexi is a very offensive-minded defenseman that's very physical," lauded the coach. "She brings a very effective combination of speed and toughness that's very hard to find. We look for Lexi to add to our team offense from the defense position and are excited about the dynamic that she brings to our team. She is another player that's just begun to scratch the surface of her potential.

Courtney Kukowski, Forward, Apple Valley, Minn. - Kukowski is a 5-foot-7, right-shot forward who plays for Eastview High School and the Minnesota Junior Whitecaps. After averaging 2.3 points per game last season for Eastview, she already has 16 points thru 11 games this year. She, too, participated in the national team's Development Camp.

"Courtney is a point producer," said Deraney. "Her ability around the net is something every coach is looking to add to the line-up. She has the ability to contribute immediately to our offense and there is a lot of room for her to improve over her four years with us. We look forward to helping her grow into the player she is capable of becoming."

Molly Illikainen, Forward, Grand Rapids, Minn. - Illikainen is a 5-foot-10, right shot forward who has been selected to play for the USA Under-18 National Team at the World Championships. The tournament will be held December 31 to January 7 in the Czech Republic.

During the last scholastic season, Illikainen tallied 49 points in 28 games for Grand Rapids/Greenway.

"Molly is one of the most effective centermen I have seen in a long time," Deraney said. "Her ability to win draws and gain possession of the puck is critical for a team's success and very few centers are able to do that as consistently as Molly does. That, coupled with her offensive skills and point production, makes her one of the most talented senior forwards in the United States.

"The exciting thing about this class is the unlimited potential they all possess. With the addition of these five student-athletes, the future of the program is very bright. We look forward to working with all of them to help them reach a very high level of skill and success over their four years as members of the Providence College women's ice hockey program. "

The current edition of the Friars will be back in action Friday, January 6, when they host Robert Morris. Face-off at Schneider Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC or by visiting Friars.com.

Great honor here! Riley did a super job in both games while Lacasse was with Canadian U22 Team - she has worked hard and learned from Lacasse. She seems to get better every start and gives Friars nice depth in goal as she has appeared in 7 of 23 games with 2.25 GA and .909 save % and is 3-1-2.
