It looks like #100 is on us. I just went into the scores thread and its 5-1UMD in the second. I spent all summer filling the rafters at the coffin with balloons and confetti for it too!
Happy Birthday HM. Looks like you got a birthday gift from Tim.![]()
I remember much brighter times in Providence, and think it is sad the depths of despair Tim Army has brought on the program. He is an alum and a Providence guy so I feel bad that things have gone so poorly. As much as you PC faithful like to bash him, I'm sure he's trying his best and doesn't want to see the results the way they are.
Maybe it is just me but 40 minute post game meetings 3 games into the season is typically not a good sign. I just hope whatever was said works.Providence (1-2), picked to finish last in Hockey East, was outshot 41-18. Coach Tim Army was still talking with his team more than 40 minutes after the game. The Friars averaged just two goals a game last season, 56th best among 58 Division I teams.
I agree that he is trying his best. Sadly, his best is not anywhere near good enough. I feel that he is in over his head for a number of reasons and should resign at the end of the season if they finish in 10th place.
As a Providence guy and an alum, Tim should do the right thing for the school and program and step down at season's end IF he continues to struggle and the team finishes the way that they have for the past SEVERAL seasons.
Tim used to complain that the players weren't "his" but he is entering his 6th season as head coach of the Friars and that excuse is out the window. (In fact, he had more success with Pooley's recruits.)
It's still early and I hope he can turn it around. We'll see.
Happy belated Bday, HM!!!
Just read a wrap-up of Saturday's game on the Duluth News Tribune website and this little paragraph about PC was buried at the end of the story,
Maybe it is just me but 40 minute post game meetings 3 games into the season is typically not a good sign. I just hope whatever was said works.
Agreed, it's not a good sign. And obviously that effort wasn't very good Saturday judging from the fans' reports here (thanks for posting btw).
As far as the time meeting goes -- I'm pretty sure that "pep talk" isn't going to go very far, simply because I really don't think Army knows how to make adjustments or has a good read on his players. There has been a seeming disconnect between him and his players, ever since he got here and lost the team at the end of his first year.
So apparently, we're going to get swept this weekend. Yee hah.
I don't mind them getting swept as long as the effort is there like it was for NU and the first UMD game. It's too early for their slide to begin. They might put one on UML if the Riverhawks take them lightly. If the Friars hussle then they can save this weekend from being total suck!
This distresses me as PC's strength is supposed to be defense and goaltending and I don't think the talent gap is that gigantic that evena good WCHA team should be skating them out of the building. They actually had a good PK last year. Ugh. I don't care about shot differential, but the 7-1 game seemed like a massacre. Glad I missed it.Now I give credit to Providence for keeping the first UMD game a close one, at least score wise. However, I wouldn't be one to say things are necessarily looking up...
Even though they kept the first game to a 5-3 loss (the last UMD goal a empty netter), they didnt keep up with UMD. They were outshot in both games terribly. In the first they were outshot 39-25, and in the second they were outshot 41-18, losing 7-1 in the second game.
Even if there offense is able to slip in a few goals, and there defense/goaltending can keep the puck out of the net, there powerplay and penaltykill just are not up to par. They scored 1 goal in 10 powerplay attempts, and let in 3 powerplay goals alone this weekend.
Now I obviously give UMD credit. they are an extremely tough team being 7th in the nation, but Providence looked flat all weekend and didnt show me anything great.
I wish Providence the best (excluding any UMD games) but they have a lot of work to do, if they want to keep up with anyone.
