It looks like #100 is on us. I just went into the scores thread and its 5-1UMD in the second. I spent all summer filling the rafters at the coffin with balloons and confetti for it too!

Is there a parade planned for Tim's return?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

And so it has come to pass...

Are the state police going to send an escort to the state line when they pass the border? Or at least a reception when the plane comes in? I'll turn on Cox Sports to see if they send Bob Bellemore out for some live breaking news coverage. :p

Guess they didn't "tighten up" after last night's game, eh?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Happy Birthday HM. Looks like you got a birthday gift from Tim. ;)

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Well not a surprising weekend results wise. Your starting goalie was good I thought. But with the many weapons of UMD it was too much. Best of luck to you guys and win some games in Hockey East for us so we can win some comparisons :D

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Is it ironic to anyone else besides me that on the night Tim Army lost his 100th game, by a score of 7-1 to Duluth that Mark Dennehy's Merrimack squad won 7-1. Obviously, UCONN is an extremely inferior opponent, especially compared to UMD. These two coaches were hired the same off-season and the programs have seemingly gone in different directions since their respective hires. I remember much brighter times in Providence, and think it is sad the depths of despair Tim Army has brought on the program. He is an alum and a Providence guy so I feel bad that things have gone so poorly. As much as you PC faithful like to bash him, I'm sure he's trying his best and doesn't want to see the results the way they are.

I agree that he is trying his best. Sadly, his best is not anywhere near good enough. I feel that he is in over his head for a number of reasons and should resign at the end of the season if they finish in 10th place.

As a Providence guy and an alum, Tim should do the right thing for the school and program and step down at season's end IF he continues to struggle and the team finishes the way that they have for the past SEVERAL seasons.
Tim used to complain that the players weren't "his" but he is entering his 6th season as head coach of the Friars and that excuse is out the window. (In fact, he had more success with Pooley's recruits.)

It's still early and I hope he can turn it around. We'll see.

Happy belated Bday, HM!!!

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Just read a wrap-up of Saturday's game on the Duluth News Tribune website and this little paragraph about PC was buried at the end of the story,
Providence (1-2), picked to finish last in Hockey East, was outshot 41-18. Coach Tim Army was still talking with his team more than 40 minutes after the game. The Friars averaged just two goals a game last season, 56th best among 58 Division I teams.
Maybe it is just me but 40 minute post game meetings 3 games into the season is typically not a good sign. I just hope whatever was said works.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Now I give credit to Providence for keeping the first UMD game a close one, at least score wise. However, I wouldn't be one to say things are necessarily looking up...

Even though they kept the first game to a 5-3 loss (the last UMD goal a empty netter), they didnt keep up with UMD. They were outshot in both games terribly. In the first they were outshot 39-25, and in the second they were outshot 41-18, losing 7-1 in the second game.

Even if there offense is able to slip in a few goals, and there defense/goaltending can keep the puck out of the net, there powerplay and penaltykill just are not up to par. They scored 1 goal in 10 powerplay attempts, and let in 3 powerplay goals alone this weekend.

Now I obviously give UMD credit. they are an extremely tough team being 7th in the nation, but Providence looked flat all weekend and didnt show me anything great.

I wish Providence the best (excluding any UMD games) but they have a lot of work to do, if they want to keep up with anyone.

Thanks 91!

I will say this -- if you come in last place 3 years in a row, you shouldn't stay on as coach of any Hockey East program.

In fact I would argue for PC, if they simply don't make the playoffs this season, he should resign. He's already been the coach of the worst stretch of hockey PC has ever had, if this year ends up piling onto that number, he ought to resign.

As it is, I wouldn't dream of extending his current deal unless PC ends up in the Top 4 by the time it expires. Which I am going to guess has a very small chance of happening.

Agreed, it's not a good sign. And obviously that effort wasn't very good Saturday judging from the fans' reports here (thanks for posting btw).

As far as the time meeting goes -- I'm pretty sure that "pep talk" isn't going to go very far, simply because I really don't think Army knows how to make adjustments or has a good read on his players. There has been a seeming disconnect between him and his players, ever since he got here and lost the team at the end of his first year.

He and the man who hired him must go for this program to improve

No worries. And I agree, after that first year which was the year I transferred to PC, it was all down hill and obviously without results keeping the players on your side becomes more and more difficult. Then once you lose the players the mutiny begins which I got to see front and center my freshman year at Merrimack which was 2004 when the team basically said they would all quit if Serino was not fired and your program becomes a public punching bag. I think PC currently meets all of those requirements and seeing as the situations mirror each other where an administrator is hand-in-hand with the hockey coach you have the catalyst for a very ugly situation.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

So apparently, we're going to get swept this weekend. Yee hah.

I don't mind them getting swept as long as the effort is there like it was for NU and the first UMD game. It's too early for their slide to begin. They might put one on UML if the Riverhawks take them lightly. If the Friars hussle then they can save this weekend from being total suck!

This distresses me as PC's strength is supposed to be defense and goaltending and I don't think the talent gap is that gigantic that evena good WCHA team should be skating them out of the building. They actually had a good PK last year. Ugh. I don't care about shot differential, but the 7-1 game seemed like a massacre. Glad I missed it.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Your drive to 100 isn't over yet (sort of)

Providence's next loss to BC will be their 100th loss to the Eagles all-time. :)
