Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

more of trump's Amerikkka: Montana state GOP lawmaker says Constitution calls for socialists to be jailed, shot.

They don't want to use elections against us, and when forced to they rig them as much as possible. They'd just as soon use violence. I'm starting to question if just using elections against them is really going to get it done anymore.
Considering his own party is condemning him...

He is done. And good on the Rs to do that.

Note: this does not excuse the overall behavior of the Rs.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

A quote from Rachel Maddow:

Political science teaches us that in the context of a democracy, authoritarians, all other things being equal, should be expected to get reelected because authoritarians should be expected to use the powers of the state to get reelected.

And that general principle has loomed for me over the leadership of President Trump throughout his first term in office because that's what I have been expecting about how he would try to secure a second term in office.

I did not expect that Trump's lawyers would lay down a legal framework to try to pre-clear him for such actions, but that's what we're seeing here today.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

Democrats in congress are between a rock and a hard place. Generally that means they will make the worst possible choice. With impeachment proceedings everyone knew going in two things, trump would be impeached by the house, and the Senate would fail to convict.

Instead of a formal impeachment, which trump and republicans would find ways to spin in their favor, the house could have spent the same amount of time and effort simply explaining that because of the incredibly partisan nature of House and Senate republicans, impeachment would only be divisive. All of the time and effort could then have been put into things like campaigns in states where Senate republicans are vulnerable. Or in simply more outreach in front of media to explain WHY they aren't impeaching, even though the president is clearly both crazy and criminal. Instead, they tried to "play by the rules." In other words they once again brought a knife to a gun fight.

Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe enough people have seen what has become of the republican party that right-thinking people will not sit on the sidelines in this election. We need to capture whatever it was that propelled democrats up and down the tickets to win in November of 2018. Keep the House, win Pennsylvania Avenue back, and find a way to get to at least a 50-50 split in the Senate. Then WE can stack the courts to the greatest extent possible, end the filibuster rule and maybe begin to undo the last few years.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

I believe the House Dems did the right thing. There's history to think of -- we needed to put on the record that we are aware at this time of what Dump and the GOP are. It would have been nice for the Reichstag to at least have censured Hitler and the Nazis even if they could do no more.

We are in a very difficult position because we need to observe democratic principles and rule of law while Dump and the GOP are merely following force majeure and the law of the jungle. The hypocrisy of the Republican Members and voters is not that important -- the ascent of a dictatorship is what counts. Whether they are honest about it is only a matter of frustration, not practical strategy.

The right has demonstrated it is not dealing in good faith. The only way to stop them is by overwhelming electoral victory followed by pursuing every legal means to reduce their power, and every social-psychological means to eliminate them as a threat to democracy. We have 100 years in learning how to manipulate people against their will for commerce. We should be able to use the same means to contain and control the disease that is the American right.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

One post that's not related to any other recent post, as I've deliberately kept away from this thread, as I'm getting tired of being angry.

But some people confuse me. On another board, some clearly R people are complaining about having pains and aches and not being able to deal with them... When recommend to go to a doctor, the standard answer is "no insurance" - naturally. Then the next few replies are about how people have been able to deal with pain as a lot of other people don't have insurance and can't go see a doctor.

Honestly, I can't feel bad for any one of these people, since they are actively voting to keep themselves in pain. And constantly risking their very precarious economic situations with a worse injury.

Come to the light people. ACA gave affordable access to doctors, and many of the D's are suggesting single payer. But instead of realizing that it will mean EVERY doctor is a choice and pain goes away, they assume the government will screw it up (pretending that healthcare payment providers are not in it for the money).

Where does it say that he's "done"? The state party chairman merely admonished him and expressed regret that his overt fascism lampshaded the rest of their candidates' kinder, gentler machine gun hand.

Impeachment was the right choice. Explaining things to the public is something Dems are currently very bad at, and it makes them look dickless to the base.

No Bill Maher has it right...every time he says something have the entire delegation yell "You Lie!".

Also, the Dems should run the video Bill made about Trump slurring his words.

I think the jury is still out on the impeachment choice. Pelosi (and we) knew it would go this way. The question now is how the whole thing will play this fall with that small number of voters everyone care about. Will it prompt enough of them to get to the polls.

And some may flip back. I heard from a guy this weekend that he voted dump in '16 but would come back this fall. He said he took a dump in '16 because of guns and has learned that this guy is dangerous in ways that far exceed the gun issue.

In Wisconsin, anyway, it won't take that many voters to flip the score. I'm sure they are being polled on the impeachment effect as we speak.

No, what you want is once again the Dems just being puzzies. If you're explaining, you're losing. You want them going around the country explaining why they don't have the balls to do the right thing. Once again?

No, they did it right. Everyone knew the fix was in, and the Republicans wouldn't vote to convict. What we didn't know was the craven depths they would sink to in doing so.

Now, that's all out in the open. The Dems could have explained and explained for months, and still not have presented as clear a picture of the state of this nation today as they just have. Now the question is, do Americans still want to live in a democratic republic, or are they fine with authoritarian rule?

Josh Marshall at TPM is arguing that by impeaching Pelosi got the Republicans in the Senate to write, produce, and perform a 2-week long campaign ad about why they shouldn't have power.
