Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again
It is still staggering for me to remember that when Nixon left office only 24% of Americans thought he was doing a good job and 57% wanted him removed. It saddens me to realize that even though we saw that time as a time of so much strife and political disagreement (and it was) there was still bi-partisan support for both impeaching Nixon and a bi-partisan disapproval of his job performance. We are so far away from that now. It is almost as if it were a myth. And this was a president who it can at least be argued had a number of major qualifications for the job and had actually accomplished some worthy things in his time in office.
As Kep has posted many times, this is the end result of a generation of conservatives (I almost hate applying that term to them) who have conducted a very purpose driven hijacking of much of our electronic media. The growth of first right-wing radio, and then FOX News, and finally the absolute swamp of lies and conspiracy mongering much of the internet has become is not an accident. It was a targeted strike against people the right and the .0001% knew could be manipulated and brainwashed into believing almost anything, as long as you serve it up just right. Sure we have 500 channels on TV now, and a hundred other ways to fixate on one electronic screen or another. But that's not because people want us to have choices.
People like Lee Atwater weren't just playing the moments to win a particular election, they were laying the groundwork for what has become. More than third of the electorate believes outlandish lies and sees every mis-characterization of the "other side" as the gospel. Again, not an accident or the inevitable outcome of the way modern politics have evolved. There were methods to this madness to lead us to where we are today.
The left, progressives and media types who value truth and accuracy needed to begin mounting a counter-attack a generation ago. Instead we had Dukakis in a tank, people caring far too much about a stain on a dress and whether or not a First Lady baked cookies and John Kerry staying mostly silent while people who use the military shamelessly when it suits them were attacking him and making fun of his time when people were firing live ammunition at him.
trump is leaps and bounds more corrupt and criminal on his best days than Nixon was on his worst. Had Nixon committed the same types of infractions and ran his White House in the manner trump has his, he also would have been impeached in his first term and removed from office. He probably would not have received a pardon following and likely would have faced charges in a federal criminal courthouse.
The elections of 2020 are either going to be where we at least draw the line and say no more, or hopefully they might even be where we say and actually do something better. Or they could be the culmination of what the right has been doing since the 1970s. There are more of us than there are of them. We have to find a way to reach them and motivate them, and the first task is to get them to the polls.
