Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

So, under the Alan Dershowitz theory of impeachment a President could get elected and play golf every single day (basically not do the job at all) and he/she could not be impeached for it. Cause not doing your job isn't a crime.

According to Alan Dershowitz, having a (D) after your name is the sole necessary and sufficient reason for impeachment.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

This is a long but great piece. I don't necessarily agree with everything but it is thought-provoking. It's not that new (5/19) but I just discovered it.

The Scottish philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre once wrote that there is something logical in the repeated rediscovery of Nietzsche and his superman theory. Whenever the capitalist order comes under stress and the rule of the elite is challenged, the ordinary morality that rich people profess is called into question. Repression, deviousness, lies, and even murder become the order of the day. At these critical moments, the ordinary, boring bureaucrats discover that their norms and morals were just a jumble of old rules without any logical underpinning. Because of this, wrote MacIntyre, “it is possible to predict with confidence that in the apparently quite unlikely contexts of bureaucratically managed modern societies there will periodically emerge social movements informed by just that kind of prophetic irrationalism of which Nietzsche’s thought is the ancestor.”

That is exactly what we are living through now, and Arendt’s thought cannot explain it—because she refused to understand fascism as the elite’s response to the possibility of working-class power, or to understand the essential role of irrationalism in all such reactionary movements, and because hers was a philosophy based on American exceptionalist assumptions of immunity to totalitarian impulses. This is sadly disproved.

QAnoners think drinking bleach will protect them from the coronavirus, and I say "go for it!".

Any of our patriots here have an issue with this?

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

This whole debate over witnesses is getting interesting. Consider the following:

1) Itch tried to shut down witnesses from the start but didn't have the votes. Hence the plan to proceed with the trial and then vote on witnesses as the end. If he could have shut this down without having to deal with the Bolton issue, he would have already.

2) Now Goopers are floating a 1 for 1 deal where Dems call a witness (Bolton) and GOP calls one (Hunter Biden or some nonsense). This isn't being done without McConnell's approval nor is it being done from a position of strength. The last thing Republicans need is Bolton testifying, followed up by a book release and a tour over the spring and summer. If he had nothing juicy to say, he wouldn't have written a book about it.

3) There's no guarantee of 51 votes to call Hunter (or Joe) Biden which seems stupid. So there's talk of Itch and Schumer working out a deal ahead of time to govern witnesses. I'm all for it. Once you start calling people, the floodgates are open. Bolton testifying probably leads to Mulvaney or others getting roped in. Hunter Biden testifying on using your last name to earn money leads to....Don Jr getting called? Ivanka? There's no end game on that one.

4) Joni Ernst recently said that she's looking at Biden's poll numbers in Iowa. She ought to be paying attention to her own! As a first term blowhard who's gone all Trump Humper she'd better hope Bolton's testimony is a dud. Not sure she's as secure in that seat as she seems to think.

Every copy of the Old Testament should be salted and burned.

Meh, it's good fiction. The problem is millions of people want Biblical cosplay as a national movement. Fans of Homer or Sophocles or Shakespeare (all of which are superior literature) don't do that sh-t.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

That's a deal I'll take. Comrade Lindsey is getting a little nervous claiming he'd have 51 votes to subpoena Schiff, the whistleblower, etc. I'm not sure what good it does to let Schiff make his case yet again, but okay. In the meantime Dems get to bring in Pompeo, Mulvaney, Parnas, etc etc.

Call his bluff Senate Dems.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

Without reading the entire article, I'm guessing that the 49% of Rs want to see Bidens as witnesses, not Bolton.

A portion of the lizard-brains think Dump set this all up as 4-dimensional chess to sink Biden.

Hey, why not both? I'm fine with Sanders v Pence.
