POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

Since that's the determination couldn't they find Stone and/or his counsel in contempt?

She could have thrown the book at him for threatening her. She's been very measured and his lawyers have been a complete ****ing joke. He should rot for 20 years for what he's done.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

A bunch of midwestern guys in their 60s who haven't accomplished anything since they did something in sports when they were 19 support Trump? I'm shocked!

I don't know which players did/did not attend and this is not defend those that did, but players from that team I believe combined for over 7,000 NHL games and plenty were from the East Coast.

Maybe this is a comment too far, but I'm no longer convinced Trump wouldn't pull a, "NotLK" if the thought he could get away with it.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

I mean, in a way it even makes it better, right? It underlies their (mostly undeserved) reputation as Everyman. "A hero otherwise so dumb, so mediocre, such a loser, that he even fell for Dump." A team of those guys beat the greatest hockey team that ever existed. It's a Frank Miller noir story.

I agree. That said, if Mark Johnson is in that pic (can't tell on my screen), I don't think people in the Madison area will be very understanding.

Nobody wants to see their crush wearing a swastika armband. Except Stephen Miller.*

"Never meet your hero."

* One of the great ironies of all this which would be hilarious if it weren't so scary is how Ivanka looks exactly like Ilsa from the SS.

2/24/80-2/21/20: This gold medal is really a testament to the state of Minnesota.
2/21/20-today: The gold medal team was a bunch of east coast guys.

I believe all the surviving players were there with the exception of Mark Pavelich. According to a piece in the WaPo Johnson, Eric Strobel, Steve Christoff and Steve Janaszak were not mentioned by trump in his remarks. Maybe those four were reluctant to wear the hat. Elsewhere I believe someone said John Harrington did not have one on. trump also appeared to be confused as to whether or not Mike Eruzione was the goalie. He asked Eruzione, "how many (shots) did you rebuff?"

I met Ken Morrow and had a nice conversation with him 7 years ago. Pointedly tried to not talk about 1980 at all since they all hear that everyday. Asked him instead about some of his college memories and questions about his time with the Isles. He was a nice guy, pleasant and eager to talk hockey. Our political culture is so toxic now I wonder if I would have the same feeling knowing these guys were either hopeless dupes or some actually support a racist fascist for president. Oh well, you can't go home I guess.

I think I speak for 57 fanbases in saying it doesn't matter because Minnesota, Wisconsin, and BU all suck.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

It’s clear from one of the pics posted that Harrington was not in a hat

"Rebuff"? I don't think even Doc Emrick has used that one in his thesaurus of hockey lingo.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

What’s sad is how they desperately try to save face with this tweet:

To us, this is not about politics or choosing sides. This is about proudly representing the United States of America. Whether your beliefs are Democratic, Republican, Independent, etc. we support that and are proud to represent the USA. It is an honor and privilege! 🏒🏅🇺🇸
— 1980 Miracle Hockey Team (@1980MiracleTeam) February 22, 2020

The irony being the quote they used. If they wore Presidential Seal hats or USA hats then no one cares. But the name on the front of the hat is more important than the team who is wearing it.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

The country is not divided 50/50. The country is divided by thirds. There's the third that are Nazis, the third that are anti-Nazis and the third of "Leave me alone"

Or as the quote misattributed to Werner Herzog goes:

“Dear America: You are waking up, as Germany once did, to the awareness that 1/3 of your people would kill another 1/3, while 1/3 watches.”

I know what third I'm in. Which third are you?

I am a Jew...I am in the third that gets killed.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

Wait a minute!! Who's to say this isn't a Russian effort to both cause disharmony here and give Kharlamov and the boys the last laugh? This pretty much confirms the Russian interference thing.

Re: POTUS: A Sharpie Is Always Needed

Was Broten?

I would bet money on it...the picture of the team itself is blurry but I am pretty sure he is wearing it.

Such a dumb decision even if you are full bore Trumpers. (and I bet half actually arent) You branded yourself, and guaranteed that your reputation is now burned for a large segment of the population.

I'm curious as to why you think half actually aren't full bore trumpers. Not saying you are correct or incorrect, just curious.

Is it hope? I admit to hoping/wishing most are not that awful because of how much their story meant to me.

But they are a bunch of middle aged/older white guys, many of them growing up in smaller town America. Those are often ground zero descriptions of trump humpers. Also, in 2020 I don't really think most people care anymore about who they may **** off. Our societal discourse now is so nasty and mean-spirited. We say it often that the right wing loves to **** off the rest of the world who knows the value of critical thinking.

It would be nice if at least some of these guys would come out and disavow the connection to trump a little more forcefully than that feeble attempt in their earlier tweet. I might have enough love of nostalgia to forgive and forget for those guys.

If they had wanted to do that, they wouldn't have worn the hats in the first place.
